Cool story bro.
Next time do us all a favor and look up the history of the largest oil spills before you jump up on that high horse of yours. You'll find that "every indication" that this is going to be "much, much worse" than Exxon Valdez amounts to about zero indications so far.
Stop fearmongering. It's unbecoming.
Uhm... yeah. What? When I extend my arms out, since my arms happen to be pretty much the same length, and I do your little test, I can repeatedly hit my fingers together even with both of my eyes closed.
Try doing it without extending your arms all the way out -- keep the elbow bent at 45 degrees.
It's MUCH harder.
I expected to see a LOT of Adobe hate here... And wasn't disappointed.
Let's just use one example: Dreamweaver
This is about the most unintuitive piece of overpriced trash I have ever used. I have never liked Dreamweaver and sadly it has only gotten worse over time.
I suspect that they have a very rough future ahead. Flash is doomed IMHO. Someone needs to go slap the Adobe execs several times and yell "WAKE UP" until they realize how badly they're screwing themselves./rant
I tired of this old, stupid argument against 'overpaid' athletes.
Do you feel the same way about musicians? How about artists? How about poets, writers, etc?
I listen to music for entertainment. I watch sports for entertainment.
Is entertainment for 'useless eaters' or are we the enlightened ones who would rather enjoy life than worry about eking out six sigma when five is perfectly acceptable?
Indeed. And the punishment should fit the crime. If you are convicted of something like this -- intentionally ruining someone's life -- then you should never see the light of day again. I'm tired of all this pansy treatment of criminals. We need to send a message: You want to mess up somebody's life? Go for it, but if you get caught, WE'RE GOING TO CUT OFF YOUR BALLS.
Don't worry man, the media will rescue us! Just yesterday the self-proclaimed "geek" on Fox News was showing the world the new iPad and he mentioned that it's "so fast because it's all RAM". Then he said, "Yeah, RAM, Rapid Access Memory".
I was on the treadmill and nearly fucking killed myself.
Their games have gone downhill since Morrowind, IMHO. Oblivion was pretty, but it was no Morrowind.
My main gripe with both Morrowind and Oblivion and to some extent Fallout 3 has been that Bethesda is very unimaginative when it comes to combat. The melee moves are very limited and the special effects for magic/spells is just supremely unimpressive. They should take note from Final Fantasy's style when it comes to the spell effects and from Demon's Souls style when it comes to melee and character movement.
and that sites with the '.xxx' suffix could easily be blocked by government web filters in the future.
It's already very easy to block adult sites. This is pointless to mention and the real issue is not how easy it is to block these sites but that censorship in general is never a good idea, no matter how easy or hard it is.
Actually, you can easily look at this in the reverse: They can now offer you a "demo" that is practically the full version of the game. It's larger, more complete, and more fun than the demo. Only problem is that as soon as you start to get towards the really good stuff, and you're hooked, you slowly start to erode...
This is already done in a similar fashion with some Asian online RPGs: You can play the entire game for free. But some items aren't free. And if you want to be the best, you have to pay for certain things. It is called the "microtransaction" method and it's actually quite effective if done right.
Not an issue if the device is bluetooth connected to your phone and has no screen... Secondly, if you're using an iPhone, the screen turns off when it's near your face, so you could cover it with your hand then put it to your face.
Not all phones emit light whilst the user is talking -- iPhones for example turn off their screens as soon as they get close to your face, so you could easily cover the screen with your hand and then put it to your face to avoid causing light pollution.
Methinks it is a moot point though: I don't see why we couldn't have a bluetooth device that does this same thing without the need of a screen...
This isn't a debate about the black or white, this is a debate about the gray. Yes, both Windows and Android will lead you into a pickle if you try to do certain things, such as run a 64bit program in native 32bit Windows.
The point is not that "This never happens with Windows" (a black-or-white comparison) but rather "This happens quite less often with Windows".
The distinction is valid.
I normally don't respond to ACs... but this one just grabbed me.
At virtually every diner/truckstop/cafe that I've been to in the last several years there are bacon cheeseburgers and fries.
Often they are larger, more fattening, and more unhealthy than similar McDonald's offerings.
And McDonalds has salads, incidentally.
It's not really about where you choose to eat as much as it is about what you choose to eat when you get there.
Perhaps you are purposefully disregarding the fact that Roland's target audience is simply.. not you? (You know.. the intelligent type.)
Most people really enjoyed ID4. Most people will probably enjoy Foundation in 3D, but only because Roland will dumb it down to their levels.
I will pay $100,000,000 for a device that does this, and allows things like curing of blindness.
The only catch is that I require a measly 20% of the global net profit, and I will only pay the 'reward' once the technology has been 'proven' on the open market for two years.
Simply put, if the mp3 is already on your device you should be able to assign it as a ringtone from the device. Forcing people to do otherwise, and even go download additional software, is ridiculous. And it is just this example that exemplifies how people feel about Apple: You buy Apple, you get locked in. You buy Android, you're free.
I'm not saying that is definitely true, but I think that's the general perception many people have...
Most of the people I've talked to who don't have iPhones say it's because they don't like Apple or the iPhone. Their reasons vary, here are some I've heard:
iTunes (DRM, iTunes library draconian sync restrictions, and what it takes to get ringtones on the iPhone are all reasons I've heard (you can't just pick an mp3 from your phone and make it a ringtone...))
Apple has succeeded in making itself look like the "rich snob's alternative" to the PC... probably because of the snarky "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" ads, and partly because of the next one,
Apple products carry a price premium that nobody can reasonably explain... you just pay more because it's an Apple.
The iPhone touch screen keyboard is cumbersome for a change from a tactile keyboard
No stereo bluetooth music transmission from the iPhone (and WHY not?)
iPhone is carrier specific for now.
I personally own an iPhone, and I like it.. despite the drawbacks. But I'm considering an Android phone next for some of the above reasons myself. I will weigh the pros and cons carefully and decide at the time -- if Polled, right now I might say that I'd get an Android phone next, if just because the idea is more appealing to me.
This could be partly why interest in the iPhone is *potentially* waning... people see there are alternatives out there.
Think about the unintended consequences of this legislation if it passes. If all commercials become normalized to their respective shows then technology like Myth TV uses to skip over commercials automatically for you (presumably based on volume detection algorithms) will suddenly fail. In other words, today if you're a savvy consumer you have the option to do something about the commercials because the shady advertising companies are in effect doing it to themselves by giving you a means to detect their bullshit. This gives you the chance to turn the commercials down not just to show levels, but below, or even skip them.
After this legislation passes that is gone. Completely. It's a step backwards until some kind of AI comes around that can detect based on content, and we both know that just ain't happening any time soon.

This is an insightful comment? Seriously, Slashdot? Sigh...
What kind of awesome math did you use to come up with that?
Three years = 1,095 days.
2,200 hours = 132,000 minutes
132,000 minutes / 1,095 days = 120 minutes / day
Honestly, where the hell did you come up with 5?

Star Wars: The Old Republic.
I am prepared to lose several hours on this... TV Sitcom? Pass.
There's probably 100 Star Wars novels written that I haven't read. Would much rather read those than watch TV.
For a second there I thought this article was about Lady Gaga. You can't imagine how thankful I am that this is not the case.

Cool story, but you get minus 10 nerd points for using AIM. :)

I bench 405. Does that automatically revoke my nerd card?
Thanks, that was a very informative post.
