Most sensible reply to this point. I couldnt agree more. I'm really not a fan of one platform versus another (ok, I will say I hate my Wii for lack of HD), but this has gone on far too long. Its getting to the point that you hate Prodigy because yout DLed something that had the Michaelangelo virus (throwback), so lets post and bitch, and get modded up. For people that play on PSN and like keep tabs on whats going on, it be a nice conversation, not so much because people want to spew their anti-Sony shit. Fine with me, but the issue is the issue. Trying to keep people on Slashdot to remain on topic is like trying to re-invent the wheel. Good luck. I've shut up through about 20 of these stories, now I wanted to speak. Damn, MY info was stolen, but it could have been any company. 300 snide comments per story dont add up to 1 intelligent one. Beneficial, as you can see, trolls need to eat too.
I'm a victim myself, but I don't see GeoHot as Che Guevara or Jesus. I didn't care that they took away the Other OS option..really..all I wanted to do is play games that I bought. Theres been huge ID theft stories before, and there will be again, but c'mon. I know its a big deal, its a mind boggling amount of people, and if you want to bring GeoHot into this, the average human will be very fucked off. We didn't want, nor care to, fight his war. Think about it, does Joe Citizen miss OtherOS or playing Modern Warfare 2?
I am totally fed up with you anti-Sony people having a field day with this story. IT HAPPENED. It could have happened to your sacred Apple, Microsoft, or Nintendo. Give the hater shit a fucking rest...seriously. Getting lame. Story Update! Then I get all excited to read, just to hear some basement dwelling fucktard bitch about the rootkit from almost a decade ago. Give me a break. You can buy or steal good music everywhere, just because Justin Timberlake's CD fuck up your shit and your're 36 doesn't make it an issue for everyone. You don't buy Sony anymore? Oh, you'll be missed. My 52" Bravia with an out of the box home theater from 14 years ago will be doing just fine. Why don't you post on some other story? Perhaps iphone or Drioid tracking? Something you can be relevant in.
Sorry about the rant. All I wanted to say was that a large corporations like Sony have a massive IT crew on trhis, and its a fucking joke that its been almost a month. I'm as pissed as you guys are. ts not two Spherion hired lackeys fixing this shit. Im very pissed off about the whole thing, how long its taking, etc. It IS bullshit, but it happens, to everyone. I've been calmly waiting it out, I think everyone else can. Data breaches happen, what can you do? If it's so imporant for to you to complain about old shit, you might want to check yourself and the life you lead. Just beacause I owned a Pontiac Fiero doesn't make all GM cars garbage. If you longer buy Sony, why comment? To whoever this might offend, fuck you, seriously, wait until Kroger gets hacked and they steal all your government assitance info. Keep jerking off to porn on your Vizio. Dickheads.
I know nothing about these sites, but anecdotal evidence...I knew a guy who used to come into where I bartended on weeknights, and played daily on one of the sites mentioned in the charges. Very sharp, and on his way to a degree that everyone at/. hates (MBA, and why?) at a major ivy-league college. Won some and lost some, but came out a few bucks up most times, and he is not even someone with money to waste, he worked a part time job at a call center selling Solo-Flex. What he did on his own time, not chocked up at the end the bar is one thing, but it seemed legit enough. He won a tournament, etc, and they paid him out properly. I feel this might be a fight over tax revenue, not improper business practices. I've never played online poker, or any type of poker short of casual parts in games such as Red Dead Redemption, but he seemed to think it was honest enough. I don't think these people were suckered, but then again, this was 5 years ago.
That's called a weak consumer, or better known as a fucking idiot. A fool and his money are soon parted. If someone thought, even for a second, that you can get a 2011 Camaro for $500 or an iPod for $3, are you dumb as hell or what?
You can keep the BRD and give me a nice, reliable 5.25. I could really see the appeal if it ends up being a replacement for some used and old C-64 from the attic or eBay ALONG with the functionality of a standard Win/Ubuntu PC. If C-64 is your favorite thing, along with the necessity of a small computer to use as needed fitting in a small space, one size could really fit all. Reminds me of the old Sega TeraDrive, with much more thought about cross-platform functionality put into it.
students are going straight from graduation to welfare or McJobs (what is it, Bachelors the new HS diploma?) while being crushed by debt they can't even get rid of with bankruptcy.
Actually, this does seem to be the case. More and more people have a BA or BS, with more and more of them being from paper-mill institutions, like you see advertised on tv. Quality of the school and GPA matter now more than ever. Unfortunately, that doesn't help pay the student loan payments, as you mentioned.
If your wife and Mom enjoy those types of games, turn them on to old Sierra and Lucasfilm point-and-click games. Mine love them, and its a very cheap/easy PC to build with no need to modern components or operating systems. Hell, with a good autoexec.bat, you can have them select Windows (if they would like to use the internet / email), or any of their new games right from a menu, with perfect settings for memory, input, sound, etc. Go with SCUMM VM if they are already computer literate, 7th Guest runs great, as does Day of the Tentacle and Sam & Max, among others.
I've heard of this "Netflix of games" already, its called GameFly. I'll keep their service and get first rate games delivered to my house, have the option to keep them for a good price, rather than streamed crap, thanks. Granted it costs more than their projected price, but its worth it to me.
To my knowledge, a low-percentage pass is overtaking another vehicle when the upcoming road is obsurced in some way. As in, you push to pass the junker in front of you without completely being able to see if the passing lane ahead is completely open. At that point, you may have to quickly shove yourself back in front of the car you just passed, as your passing lane may be taken. I assume it means "low-percentage of success" or "low-visibility of oncoming traffic or hazards."
I'm indifferent to it being right or wrong as well. I'll take advantage of playing "back-ups" due to the work of someone else, make no doubt about it. I'm just saying its a terrible excuse. No features were removed from Wii/Xbox to spur the community to get to work on those from day one, it just comes down to what reasoning people want to believe. Disc "back-ups", homebrew, Other OS, its all so flimsy. People want things for free. A functioning HDMI connected Linux box can be had for less, and work much better than, an Other OS modified PS3.
Want a more logical reason as to why it wasn't hacked earlier? Blu-Ray. The media for copying Xbox and Wii is much cheaper and nearly every computer since at least 2006 has a built in DVD burner these days. Blu-Ray writers are still a bit expensive, slow, and the blank media itself is rather cost prohibitive (I wouldn't want to pay for those coasters). Oh yeah, and the thriving community of those who are willing to upload/download huge 50gig rips in this day and age of internet caps and crippled torrent streams. Even in theft, there is a supply and demand curve. Why work on cracking a system that a small portion of the population has the means and concern to take advantage of? Now, forward four years and those means become more commonplace.
The argument that it took four years of real work to accomplish this level of owning the system is simply false. It didn't take any more effort than other comparable consoles, such as the 360.
Then by your logic above, every system that has ever been cracked in this generation (you forgot the DS and PSP) has had weak copy protection schemes. You believe their reasons for doing it, so of course you would believe the length of time they were at work on it. Logically thinking, being that a human designed and programmed it, surely another human can decipher and deconstruct it. If the removal of the Other OS option is what spurred them on, and you want to believe that, so be it. I'm saying there are more realistic underlying reasons. Hell, I'd be more likely to believe that they were so angry about the loss of PS2-PS1 compatibility that they opted to do it to prove the hardware is capable in its new, modified form. I am in no way taking Sony's side on this either. I couldn't have cared less they removed the Other OS option, but I am pissed about the loss of the PS2 capability, as one of the owners of the fat PS3s the suffered the YLOD with my new model no longer supporting it. They could lose hand-over-fist money to piracy after this for all I care, I'll help. I just don't know how many people are going to buy their "revenge" excuse for doing it. They have quite a few/.ers, thats for sure. Wow, what could be accomplished if only they removed something that the average citizen gave two fucks about that actually IS a selling point for the system, like say, DVD compatibility or the photo viewer! Oh lord, we would all be running our lives off all the hacked PS3s by now. Nevermind though, it would actually go to a class action suit that would likely end in the consumers being on the winning side. No uproar over a niche feature being lost except from niche users who cared.
The point still is still valid that no matter what the hacker's reasoning is for doing so, it doesn't make a difference to Sony or likely the courts, if it goes that far. Also, there are likely many more valid reasons as to why the one individual who succeeded in hacking the PS3 got around to it now, beyond Sony removing the Other OS option. Maybe he couldn't afford one / didn't want to potentially brick such an expensive piece of hardware (for the first 2-3 years they were much more expensive than they are now), or was busy with other projects (as we know GeoHot was), or felt a general lack of interest from the community (no interest = no fame for accomplishing it). I'm sure you could add quite a few to that list yourself.
Just because they said they did it in response to the removal of the Other OS option doesn't make it so. It just sounds very whitehat-esque and so heroic to do, but in reality I think it just made a convenient excuse. I've said it before, two wrongs don't make a right in this instance. Am I glad they did it? Sure. Would I reap the benefits of playing "back-ups" on my own system? You bet. I grow weary of all the posturing on this issue. If they thought, even for a second, that their reasons matter to Sony, I cry for their ability to utilize common sense.
That doesn't mean they were the only ones, just the only successful ones. For something that could be construed as a crime, do many people announce it for fear of something like this exact situation befalling them? Would you pubically announce that you are working on a marijuana farm, or planning out the abduction of a child, to the world? Extreme examples, I know. The crackers want attention and praise, and Sony will make sure they get it, no matter what their reasons are. Its all designed to lead to mods defeating copy protection, stop kidding yourselves. Yeah, the weed in the marijuana farm is going to glaucoma patients! I swear, officer!

Ahhhh...its so nice to feed trolls and see them come out in droves.
Oh, and I'm sure you own a Vizion and jerk off to Gears of War 3 trailers. Please mod flamebait.
Thanks, anonymous. Do you work for Sony or just a dripping wet pussy>
Thats a sentece in your """. not a word. Yes, wooosh, I get it.

Are you guys hiring? =D I prefer PR or Marketing!!

Have some issues with the list but I still love this kind of stuff. Can anyone recommend something similar or better, perhaps on the East Coast?

I work for Charles Darwin University.
Is your school's biggest rival Oral Robert's Univesity?
The author's face at the top or bottom of TFA could easily be mistaken for the mugshot of the assailant.
I'm sure its in the EULA somewhere that they reserve the right to take back any PC without notice.

Atlantic Broadband is so low, it doesn't even make the chart! I kid, I know they don't meet the size criteria for analysis, but seriously, they suck.
Said that above as well, just nobody wants to listen.
