I don't know about you, but when I'm listening to music on the move (on my zen nx - ipod has terrible battery life) I don't tend to look inside my pocket that much, on on the passenger seat if i'm driving. Sometimes people seem to forget that loads of us were listening to mp3s on the move way before Apple came out with the iPod. It's a nice looking device, of that there's no doubt, but it's just a piece of electronics that allows me to listen to music - nothing more nothing less. That fact seems to have been lost recently.

Exactly. We had 1 user run this thing prior to Symantec getting their AV definitions out. It took about 100 odd bounces (which is only 50 more than normal) to land in my mailbox to realize something was seriously wrong. We updated the AV on the exchange server (Sybari Antigen whoot!) and pushed out Norton definitions to all the clients. Problem squelched in 30 minutes, with 1 person needing a manually disinfection. Incompetence and the inability to react to a situation quickly is what costs most of these companies all their money. If the infrastructure to contain it isn't in place you're fucked regardless. Btw we run Exchange 2003, 6 servers company wide and we haven't had a crippling *email* virus in 3 years.

Couldn't agree more (quoting your entire email as you posted as AC/0). If, as you generally have to when designing systems, you assume end-users are computer illiterate, you're left with the conclusion that it's crap admins to blame for these virus outbreaks. No amount of bleating about how Microsoft software is awful is going to change the fact that companies who hire non-morons to design, build and support their IT infrastructure generally do NOT have problems at all.

I work for a well-known mail filtering company, and I'm getting a front-row seat for the impact this is having. It's large, even for companies that have our services.

Now, imagine you have tens of thousands of employees and you're not using a service like ours. You're going it alone. Your admins. Your equipment. Your anti-virus software which you hope gets the new signatures before the worm gets to you. Your admins and helpdesk staff are working their butts off for at least a week, probably more (not that they weren't already busy). You might have hundreds or even thousands of infected machines to deal with. Countless bounces. Suddenly, you find yourself looking at a cost reaching into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Not a pretty sight.

Nice advert for your services, you forgot the URL ;)

I work in a 100% NT4 desktop corp environment (our admins, our equipment) and we have around 40,000 users on various domains. We use Exchange and Outlook. Wanna know how many of these "deadly" worms we've had infect our systems in the last 3 years I've been working there? None

There's nothing inherently deadly about MS stuff in a corp environment as long as your admins and engineers are worth the money they're paid. Frankly I welcome hearing how much cash companies are supposedly losing with this - let it be a kick up the backside. :)

if i click "premium services" or "subscriptions" or "media guide" it uses its embedded MSIE to take me to windowsmedia.com where i can purchase music (a bit like iTunes) or other music related products, i cannot navigate away from their site as r-click and url control has been disabled

Much like Realplayer's browser part? Solution: Don't use Windows MediaPlayer.

also if i click on a movie/mp3 link in MSIE (on any site) it opens in a sidebar which also redirects to windowsmedia.com (without permission i might add and has a tracking code attached) where adverts/promotions are shown, there is no way anyone can compete with this as its built into the core of XP (i had to block go.microsoft.com and windowsmedia.com as this was the only way to stop this behaviour) of course the majority of non tech-savvy/aware people wont know how to do this and so are at the mercy of MS's redirects/media tracking and marketing power.

You must have missed the message box that pops up the first time you click on a "media link" in IE. It asks you if you want to use a the media sidebar or not. I selected no. You must have selected yes. To change it, you don't have to go to the trouble you've gone to - just change the options in IE.

Since when is it the defendant's job to prosecute himself?

Not entirely related, however, an interesting facet of UK law as it stands at the moment, when presented with a NIP (Notice of Intended Prosecution) for a speeding charge (taken by a speed camera), the recipient has two choices:
    1. Fill in, sign the form and send it back, thus incriminating yourself.
    2. Refuse to fill it in and get charged with obstruction of justice.

There is a "loophole" that involves, amongst other things, the defendant returning the form without signing it, going to court, adn finding the police can't use it as evidence. Somethign along those lines, anyway.

That snippet of our law aside, what SCO are attempting to do would surely be laughed out of every court in teh land. I await the judges decision with baited breath. SCO is going down - of that there's no doubt, however, I wonder whether the main protagonists in this case will be able to walk away scot free under the protection of Canopy. I sincerely hope that won't be the case.
