The problem is not Agile versus Waterfall, Its the lack of documentation early in the process and knowing the business needs during the project. It should be that management approves the project, business analysts get the business needs and create requirements, and IT reviews the requirements and builds the software. The reality is that management used to be IT, so they *KNOW* what the issue is and writes the requirements, system analysts are used in place of business analysts to write the requirements, and IT just has to "get er done!".
By the way most companies aren't software houses, so why the hard deadlines? Oh yea bonuses are attached to the projects. As I deliver my project on time I get my bonus. It doesn't matter that is a feature starved,half-assed implementation that make everyones job just that more difficult.
Not to sound like my tinfoil hat has gotten too tight, but really is this warfare? So our grid goes down. Does this mean we can't live? Does it stop us from growing crops, transporting them on trucks, and buying them in markets? Don't we have the resources to build other technologies to provide our food and shelter? If the Chinese crippled us via Cyber Warfare, they would lose all of their economic power. We buy more of their junk than anyone else. If China used this as a method of physically taking over the US (they already own our stuff) I am sure the nukes or an EF bombs would put us all on the same playing field.
that CNN is reporting it. I remember when people here were saying this, but the mainstream press had nothing but glowing things to say about Microsoft. The fact that the mainstream press is NOW saying it, means that even less technical people are looking elsewhere for the toys.
It's not like there's a lot of 3D choices. Most of the movies I saw in 3D still work in 2D. Until there is something really compelling *cough* porn *cough*, it's not going to fly off the sheleves.
The people writing the laws ARE Lawyers! The Legislative and Executive branches are full of lawyers. We have over 50,000 federal laws and growing daily. Add to it state and local statues, and it's amazing that more people aren't in jail. Compound this fact that most people can even understand the laws (because lawyers using their pedantic language), and there is little hope of defending yourself. That's why any bill is well over 1,000 pages.
Until I can pay $70 a month from Comcast or Time Warner for this Service. Of course they will charge me and additional $10 a month for equipment... er a statue!
Our shop has XP as our standard OS. Instead of moving to Windows 7 directly, I suggested we use Ubuntu 10.4 as our base OS, and we make a Windows 7 VM. This not only gives us flexibility in what our clients run, our legacy guys can use Ubuntu to web surfing and email, and use XP/Windows7 for legacy development.
I am impressed with Ubuntu. It found our network during install and was ready to go. Most of the packages do not need a command line, and updates work just like Windows. The thing that caught my attention though was the Windows 7 "wait" circle looks shockingly like Ubuntu's "wait" circle!
It's the latest thing in the "recycling" craze. Lets make sure that Kevin Costner doesn't find out, or he will put it in a futuristic movie... oh wait, he did!
I know there is a Java bias here, but as a Swing developer JavaFX really rocks. I like that I can do the same things as Adobe and Microsoft, but code in my preferred language. The enterprise tools are coming out now, but the ability to animate objects easily makes you think out of the box for some applications. If you are a Java guy, check it out!
I would understand if you were keeping for posterity, but why write if you don't want it known? If they are private thoughts, keep them in your head. I believe everybody has some kind of wild, crazy idea that they don't want to share. That's why mine is in my head. Someday, when I don't have to worry about what others think about me to make money, I might share. These thoughts that you write would be very valuable to your family and others in the future. Historical correspondence has been a great way to understand WHY people did what they did. I suggest you leave it there.
Anyone who has tried to following a several month conversation with several version of the same document in Outlook would know why Wave could have been great. To have one place to read meeting notes from the team, or to read the decision making process for a project that you are going to maintain would have been very beneficial. Don't tell me that the company WIKI would have the documentation. Developers are notoriously awful at creating documentation, let alone maintaining it. Using Wave as project documentation tool would have kept it alive.
that being said, add Wave to the list of really good ideas poorly implemented. I believe Wave failed for the following reasons:
The server piece wasn't readily available. If I could have just walled it off for my organization only it would have seen better adoption
No intergation with Google Docs. A Collaboration tool with the documents to collaborate with is just stupid
It was buggy. I don't know how many times I added contacts that just disappeared...
I do firmly believe that someone will pick up this idea and run with it. I just hope they make it work better
When I tried it, I.. could.. only.. get two.. or.. three words.......... to.. display.. It was very... frustrating... like using a... 300... BAUD... Modem...
Ordinarily, I wouldn't post this http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/03/04/ie6.funeral/index.html?hpt=T2, but the comments from non-techies are eye opening. They believe it's a "ploy" from Microsoft to get you to upgrade to Windows 7. You can pry IE 6 from their cold dead hands. IE 6 unfortunately, isn't dying anytime soon.
Yeah , the High School teacher. The ultimate combination of an NFL all-star and American Idol contestant! They can barely teach the subject that went to school to teach others. The problem is that there are too many barriers for "outsiders" to have an after school club or part-time teaching. I am certain that User Groups, semi-retired technologists and others can really make a difference. Besides, the kids who do know, don't want to be found out. Not because they are nerds, but because they 1337 Haxxors!
I don't care what the "Whiz Bang" features are if I can't easily create an application with my existing tools with a language I already know, I am not interested. I barely have enough time keeping up with developments now. This may have worked if they came out 18 months ago, or even if they came out before the Veriizon/Android deal. With Windows Mobile, Palm Pre, Blackberry, iPhone, and Android, I don't see where this fits. Maybe it will sell in Asia. What US phone company is going to put their marketing dollars behind this? Sprint?
That is an interesting metaphor because in America, our Kindergarten teachers are more like cat herders!

It works for Fox News!

apparently leaves a mark!
I thought it was posting goatse http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goatse
When I read that, I thought our overloads have graciously decided not to nuke us, but to sue our "toy" manufacturers. Now we will die of boredom!

than the current stable of American light beers! It gives you a buzz and you will only get sick if you drink too much!

Adult Swim has been running these periodically for about six months now. The first one I remember was Andy Dick causing trouble in a bar....

They apparently have all of the bugs figured out for the Space elevator, and are secretly working on the space "escalator"....
