  1. I'm 40 days older than Dr Who. on Doctor Who Makes Guinness Book of World Records · · Score: 1

Wow. However, I don't really consciously remember Dr Who until Jon Pertwee came along. Remember being scared by the Sea Devils (my garndparents lived in Portsmoth, where those disused Sea Forts were a part of the scenery), the Green Death (filmed in a colliery just up the road from my town), and being chased around the local exhibition hall by some real Daleks(from BBC LLandaff). I lost interest after Tom Pertwee I think, but the latest incarnation definitely changed the tone and brought my interest back. Cool that so much was filmed in Cardiff again. Toss up between Jo and Leela as the sexiest assistants :-)

  2. Nothing to do with Technology on Why Is Data Mining Still A Frontier? · · Score: 3, Informative

This is a hoary chestnut. I have a masters in AI, and a PhD in machine learning (and had a lot of interest in machine discovery).

The ultimate problem, is that for most datasets, there are an infinite (at least), set of relations that can be induced from the data. This doesn't even address the issue, that the choice of available data is a human task. However, going back to assuming we have all the data possible, you still need to have a specific performance task in mind.

Think of this in terms of permutations. Lets say you have variable A, B, and C. They are all binary (have values 1 or 0). Now, you are given a set of these assigments (eg A=1, B=1,C=1, A=1,B=1, C=1, and so on). Now, try to tell me what the correct partition is. Sort them in to two sets of any size. See the problem ? I didn't tell you what I wanted as characteristics of those sets - so in effect, they are all possible good partitions.

So, data-mining ultimately relies on human's deciding what they want to read from the tea-leaves of the data.

Now, give it up, and start addressing issues of efficient algorithms given that you have a specific performance task :)

Again, falsehood :) but you get the point. I love both of them, and wish Adams had the output of Pratchett! I remember he inspired me somewhat to finish writing my thesis at the time, when he said he just has a target to write 400 words a day (or was it 4000, I forget).

I dont get to name drop on this forum much, but when I was a teenager back in Wales, there was a stage production of HHGTG at the local student theatre (Sherman Theatre?). I remember them serving Pan galatic gargleblasters during the reception, and that myself and my friend James got to say Hi to him. I dont have any witty epitaphs to report, just remembering that he was very tall and sanguine. Thinking about it now, sort of a taller, thinner, less bearded Terry Pratchett.

Sure, you want to do an XML schema for books - go ahead. For CD's sure. In fact, for any domain.
