Actually fair is usually defined as "an agreement between two people who like eachother." Thus this competition really isn't fair, if anything price collusion to keep margins at a level where workers can make a decent wage would be "fair competion." This form of competition is simple free, so do not confuse freedom with fairness, for freedom is by definition ammoral.

This is a bad name for a book on security. The author is clearly trying to parody the sound of asian martial arts names. However if I remember correctly Foo is also chinese for luck. This is why the chinese lions guarding buildings are called Foo Dogs. The band Foo Fighters supposedly chose its name after seeing the word Foo inscribed on the bottom of some chinese tchotsky, although Foo fighters are also what the air force called UFOs before that term was coined. Anyway the name may be misinterpreted to suggest that securing WiFi is a matter of luck, which it is not.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the concept of patents, only that the U.S. patent system is deeply flawed because it grants patents left and right where no real innovation has occurred. I think it would be fair for everyone to be able to patent something or for no one to be able to patent anything, but microsoft is reaping the double advantage here. Because they are an 800 lb corporate guerrilla they can not only prevent other people from using things they patent but can also use others peoples patents with impunity. When our founding fathers came up with the patent system they didn't evision the amount of corruption plaguing the U.S. government today.

Actually I have a rather serious problem with my nethacking right now. I currently use the dvorak keyboard layout on a powerbook. This means that without an external keyboard with a numberpad there is no efficient way for me to play, since obviously the hjkl controls in dvorak are a no go and I can't go in diagnols with the arrow keys. Perhaps someone else has encountered this problem? Actually if I could get a really small USB or bluetooth joystick that I could use for direction commands that would even work as well, though it might scare whoever is sitting next to me on the airplane.

  17. 500 Watts on Human Powered Helicopter · · Score: 5, Interesting

In case anyone here doesnt know about generating watts, 500 sustained for over 3 minutes is quite a task. I have been rowing for 7 years and this year our team had physiological testing where we started at 200 watts and increased by 50 every 2 minutes. I last about 8 minutes and managed to hit about 400 watts but couldnt hold it long enough to be allowed to continue to 450. We increased in this manner in order to find our VO2 maxes, and certainly had I started at 500 watts I could have held it for a while, maybe a minute and a half. But 3 minutes is just sick. Especially since this was on the rowing machine which uses all muscles and this guy is only uses his legs, no back and arms. This 3 minute test will generate enough lactic acid to kill the average 60 year old man, and will certainly leave him in excruciating pain if he is able to do it at all.

I would guess that there is a very strong correlation between how many times each song is requested to be played on the radio and how many CDs are sold. If the formula suddenly changes wildly that would be a very good indication. But seriously, how could you possibly buy a song without listening to it first? Most radio stations only play the same one or two songs off a CD, is there even a legal way to listen to the other ten songs on the CD at all? Buying something without knowing what your paying for is just being an irresponsible consumer, period.

For me personally I admit to downloading my fair share of MP3s on Napster back when all the cool kids were doing it. But that the thrill of raping and plundering has worn off and P2P is widely looked down upon by the technologically elite who made it popular I buy all my songs off iTMS or just buy the CD. Five years ago this would have been a big deal because there was no way to legally download songs and listen to all the tracks on a CD legally. But now there is, so people caught downloading anything that can be legally purchased in the US for a reasonable amount of money get what they deserve. (Anime, films, and music not distributed in the US not included)

That way it wouldn't be a violation of copyright laws for displaying it in public since it would be like each person had rented the DVD on their own but are just by coincidence now watching it together. Now for a buck or two a person per movie the industry isnt able to bitch about being deprived of money and would have very week grounds for a lawsuit. Of couse its still illegal to trespass, but thats a different story entirely.
