I'm actually starting a blog. It's called "urban asceticism". It will be more or less dedicated to achieving Buddha-nature in the city.

I'd recommend reading "All Marketers are Liars" by Seth Godin. Not only does it cover this topic very well, but it is also written in a style that one would do well to emulate. The book basically explains how to tell stories that match people's worldviews. For example, Fiji water sells for twice as much as Poland Spring because it has a story on the bottle.

I think my biggest problem as a writer has been just learning to get over myself. Adding chiasmus and clever literary trope seems clever to me at the time, but doesn't really do anything for whoever is reading my stuff.

Another weird habit I have is writing everything as if it were going to be read out loud. This makes many of my sentences unreasonably short. Which is good, when read it my voice. But most people on the web don't read in my voice.

(you can see what I'm talking about if you check out the newer writing on my website)

Rule of thumb: Anything that allows you to "level up" is out to fuck you, take your money, or both. Examples: School, military, corporate hierarchy, catholic church, world of warcraft, scientology, etc.

Now if you're both in the military and addicted to WoW then you're really in trouble. That's either the second or the fourth circle of hell, depending on how the maths work. Either way it isn't good.

Wearing pink for a guy shows self-confidence, the trait most attractive to women. If you are able to wear a pink shirt and no one gives you shit about it, it shows that you are a dominant male. It is a great way to show value to women. It's completely true, I read it in a magazine once. I think it was in PC Gamer.

Your analogy is broken because Firefox doesn't take advantage of the network effect. The more people that use a particular online social bookmarking service, the more value there is for each user. I'm not saying there shouldn't be different approaches, but it would be nice if there was some sort of standard so that they could interoperate with each other.

  25. Re:Great New Idea! on Slashdot Bookmarks · · Score: 5, Interesting

Exactly, all this is doing is splitting the online bookmarks sharing market into even smaller and smaller silos, subtracting value from end users. Why doesn't Slashdot just work out a deal with del.icio.us so that Slashdotters can mark the fact that they have a Slashdot account in their del.icio.us preferences, and then have those bookmarks be minable by the Slashdot editors. That way it would be easier for the Slashdot editors, better for del.icio.us, and would actually add value to the Internet instead of further splintering the market.
