  1. Not his business model on Lumines Heralds New Costs for Xbox Live Games · · Score: 2, Interesting

This business model has been suggested before but I never thought it would start so soon.

When I purchase a game I expect a full game that I may play as often and as far as I want to what would be considered the end. This episodic content or toll-bridge gaming model is exactly what I don't want but of course it means more money for the game companys so they will continue to push it. Yes, vote w/ you $ of course but keep posting to any and all forums so that they get the message. We want a full game but will be willing to pay more for EXTRAS like maps and expansions. Oblivion(I am ignoring the horse armor) had it right with the new areas in the game because the game was so full and large to begin with. You can spend hundreds of hours in that game without ever worrying about extra content. The content was cheap compared to what it gave you. I really hope that is method of toll-booth games fails miserably.

Couldn't agree more. Looking at the track where the ape swats at the car is just ridiculous. I loved the long tracks and trying to bend them just right so they didn't shoot off the track and embed themselves into the wall as they fly down the stairs. What happened to the solid metal cars that could last and only have a few chips of paint missing after 20 years?

Ummm, your talking about an account setting that can be changed to > 30 days. Talk to your admins. As far as the multiple prompts to assure the system you are you? I think if you only had to worry about it every 6 months or 2 years it wouldn't be a big issue. Single-sign on works great but Ray didn't develop it. As far as Linux, Lotus Notes was developed way before Linux was very popular and technically isn't a design issue.

Dragon Lair's control scheme and game play is so simplistic and boring that I really am surprised that anyone would still be interested in it , unless it's purely for a sentimental reasons.

  7. Re:I'd have to say... on Document Management and Version Control? · · Score: 1

Everyone is suggesting code revision software when I took that you were looking for something for documentation control. Being a Lotus Notes developer I have used a custom Notes Database which I built so it did exactly what we wanted. I've also used Domino.doc which does a great job at version control of whatever document (.doc in our case) you are using. The design is a little funky but can be modified.

  8. As a Lotus Notes/Domino developer.... on Lotus vs. SharePoint · · Score: 1

Disclaimer: I've been developing Lotus Notes applications both Client based and Web based for 12 years.

I have heard all the complaints about Notes and agree with some of them. I can't speak for Microsoft's answer(12 years late) to Lotus Notes because I haven't used it. I'm not gonna belittle it without getting my hands on it so I'll just do my part in defending what I know.

The part of the article I disagree with is the developer resource as being a downside. Lotus Notes is not a difficult application platform. Trust me on this. I find it easy to work with and while I don't know every nook and cranny. If you know Visual Basic you know Lotusscript. @Formula language is very simple and isn't nearly and complex as application macros. I found most templates, even ones that are put out by openntf.org's open source templates will need to be customized in the real world. I can only count on one hand how many times a template or even preexisting application didn't need to be alterted in some way. I don't care how easy a template is on any development platform, you will almost always need some customization at the very least. I find the customization is key in making a customer happy with their application. If you know HTML, Javascript, C++, Java, Cold Fusion, etc, you can use these products to enhance the Web side of things aka Domino. Are they as integrated as they should be, no. But it's not impossible.

I agree with you but I want to add to your analogy of the ps2+DVD player tie-in. The trouble is people won't consider $500/$600 a low-cost blu-ray player like they may have with the ps2. I think you realize that but didn't put it in your post.

Since Sony is at the top of the price hill they will be the first to drop cost. However, it will be a killer on their stock.

I think if you showed someone 640x480 and then a screen at 1440x1080 they will notice a difference. I agree with the other analogies though. Maybe I'm just to literal minded. Game innovation is a sticky problem. Game publishers aren't going to throw millions at an unproven game genre. So smaller developing companies pick up the innovatino flag and run with it. The problem is they have litte or no backing. I just saw a google based video of a game called Spore that might force me to purchase a game for my PC for the first time in 3 years.

Google Earth, Microsoft's version are also pretty good at this so are you telling me they will be shutting these down? What's next artists, can't paint pictures? Banning camcorders and cameras can't be far away. I used to work in Philadelphia in City Hall. I would see people walking around with cameras and camcorders video taping everything.
