While slightly flippant, parent post is 100% on target and not an attempt to be funny. The viable substitute will simply cost the same or less per unit and be easier to use / harder to scratch up. What if the cost of an 8GB USB key were the same as a DVDRW?
Interestingly, the one fact they report - 35% of users in Win9x/NT
Not at all suprising. When I gave refurbed computers out to nonprofits, they all insisted on Win98 because "I don't know how to use WinXP". Nevermind that XP and 2K were all MS gives out on the cheap to NPs. Instead, the NP clients just wanted blank boxes. I pretended not to assume they just took them and installed yet another iteration of their old copy of 98. Anyway, I'm sure the same "But I don't know the new thing" mentality pervades the for-profit world as well.
Manga has been mainstream entertainment for people... in Japan, and accounts for about 1/3 of all books and magazines published there
Yeah, but they're also run off on cheap newsprint there in black and white so the cost is very low. Graphic novels in the USA are slick glossies using fancy color techniques and cost as much as a nice hardcover. These two things are apples and durien for comparison.
Honestly, I dont see much of a need for GPS on mars. It's not like we need a precise 10 meter point of exactly where a rover is
Such a system could be used on approach as well as on the Martian surface. Then failures like the Mars Global Explorer would be less likely as incoming craft could navigate, and course correct, themselves much much much more easily.
Invariably they've chosen the option b. And yes, I do get the decision in writing
An IT professional should know that option A is the only way to go. So it sounds like you are just too lazy to do a proper presentation of the cost/benefit and risk analysis (which done right will convince any boss type), if not just too lazy to want to jockey tapes.
Is there a McDonalds across from a McDonalds somewhere?
Because there's already a Burger King on the other corner... I actually did once see a McDonald's with a conveyor that brought food to a drive-through kiosk on the other side of the street. The kiosk's occupant took your order and cash and then people in the main building cooked the food. The conveyor was glassed over so you could watch your bag of food trundling across.
how many Starbucks he has seen across the street from another Starbucks
While this is quite funny on the surface there is sound business reasoning behind it. Most traffic intersections are laid out in such a way that a shop on one corner is a major pain to get to from driving along the opposite side of the street. And then getting back the way you were headed requires a major detour. So in a high density area with a lot of traffic it is perfectly worthwhile to open two shops, each on opposite corners to catch customers headed in both directions. Keep in mind when opening your own shop, whether a franchise of a major chain or a private brand.
No offense but this is one of the STUPIDEST comments I've ever read on slashdot. Actually, I take that back... I do mean to offend you. Who's to say that the American players aren't fifth generation Americans? Just because they have an "ethnic" surname
To you and all the other responders and moderators who've blasted me over this comment: I happen to know a LOT of immigrant families to the USA as my wife is from another country and we hang out with a lot of friends from the 'old country', as it were. This is how I just happen to know that the immigrant parents, in a flush of enthusiasm for their new home, overwhelmingly give traditional Anglo type types for their children so you get constructions like "John Wang" and "Richard Kasimdzhanov". What you do NOT find very often are given names such as "Hikaru" and "Sergey", which are samples of the GIVEN NAMES of the players listed from USA. Since I never mentioned SURNAMES your flippant comment about "Smith" and "Jones" is not relevant. I assumed that everyone would know I meant given names while I should have assumed hotheaded people who don't know any immigrant families would blast me as a troll posting "stupidest" comments.
All five of the players listed as from USA have blatantly obvious Russian (and one Japanese) names. Looks like no native players in this one (again). Alas, purely intellectual pursuits are frowned upon in these here parts.

A Stratellite will have... clear line-of-site to approximately 300,000 square miles, an area roughly the size of Texas. However, the Company's initial plan is to use one Stratellite for each major metropolitan area
Why is a complex airborne system more efficient than little ground towers in cities? It seems that huge swathes of rural areas would be better served by such a scheme. OK, so there aren't as many potential customers but there isn't any competition either. Small towns of a few hundred people are scattered all over rural Texas, Kansas, Oaklahoma, [insert midwest state here]. They might not rate a cell phone tower and certainly not cable internet but one of these things could serve hundreds of such communities.
It also seems this would be perfect for risky places like Afghanistan and Iraq. Hard to car-bomb communications infrastructure that's at 60k+ feet up in the air.
I realize that simplicity in pricing is their goal, but it seems odd that little between track oddities lasting 34 seconds are priced the same as a 'real' song.
TMBG put on the most entertaining concert I've ever attended. The skit with the puppet heads in the spotlight 15 feet over the stage was a scream. And lugging the glockenspiel all the way to Colorado for one note during one song was a nice touch.
This ignorance is often displayed by many politicians, regardless of political orientation. Anything we can do to change it?
Switch to a Confucian style system where the beauracratic government managers are hired and ranked by a series of tests. Problems with this are myriad but would solve the problem of lack of knowledge.
You forget, these are the same people who claimed that they lost money on Forrest Gump, so they wouldn't have to... the profit-based percentage he was owed.
No movie has ever made a profit; it is called "Hollywood Accounting". This is a well known practice to anyone who has taken even an intro to accounting course. The studios purposefully look for suckers to sign over rights in exchange for a share of profits they know will never appear. This is a perfect example of why EVERYONE, regardless of whether you're a sculptor, painter, or renassaince actor, should take take a few basic business courses so those who have taken a lot of business courses can't jerk you over.
This is great. As long as the terrorist population in the USA is more than 2%, some of them are guaranteed to be caught. If 4% of the population are terrorists, and they all pass through that airport, half of them will be caught! Your tax dollars at work...
Last fall I was checking out a notebook with a Celery 2.x GHz chip in it. The damn thing couldn't even play a Divx-encoded movie
If you were testing it in the store, keep in mind that the default install from the factory will have absurd amounts of preinstalled software, all of which is set to 'fast start' mode where it's already running. So that laptop might not have been as bad as you think.
Why don't we just accept that now and get working on the alternatives, so we're actually ready for the day when the oil does run out?
Because oil won't be available at full level one day and then gone the next day. It will slowly be used up and fields will go dry one at a time. As they run out, supply will slowly contract and price will gradually rise. Your drop-in replacement plan will happen when it is economically feasable. Right now it isn't. So why spend extra on development today when the replacement isn't needed?

You can get plenty of not too small ones for free by taking apart old 5.25" hard drives.

UPS is currently selling for $75.17 per share. Good time to buy, or too late?
That $75 is about 30 times the earnings per share, currently just under $3. Most companies are in the 10x to 20x range.

What brilliant product placement. How much did the Mars corp (appropriate name!) pay towards the project?
