DRM does not stop "pirates"...it doesn't even slow them down. Quite frequently, cracked pirated verisons are available on the torrent sites before the actual products are released. The ONLY thing DRM does is inconvenience paying customers.

DRM won't stop anyone reading this post, but it CAN stop casual piracy. When your mom can't give a copy of Quicken to her sister, that is a victory for DRM.

The question is, is the reduction in casual piracy worth irritating or chasing away your more sophisticated users. I have to think the publishers have thought this through and believe that they are doing the right thing for their business.

    It's still lame though.

When a new potential revenue stream is instantiated (ie, born) the retailer references the birth record and local demographics. Based on the instance's socioeconomic class and other factors, a queue of products is created and stored in a database. The instance will then receive products and bills without intervention for the remainder of their lives. (Geolocation data from the instance's mobile phone can be used to update the product stream in near real time. You have probably already seen some fascinating articles about this in the standard publications, eg J Retail Sci.)

Advanced collaborative filtering will be used to ensure that the product stream is highly relevant to the instance's lifestyle. Obviously, this method is patented. The specific database techniques used to store the predicted product stream has also yielded an unreasonably broad patent, which we are very excited about.

Eventually, the legislature may wish to allow our revenue streams to opt out of the program, so we all need to get ready to spend some time in court to protect the business model.

It's worse than you think. They associate your mere existence with guilt. (I don't doubt that there are race issues too.)

I know cops and have done the ridealong thing. It was always f'ing fascinating.

In my experience, cops develop an "us vs them" mentality. If a cop has to come talk to you for any reason, he is likely to be suspicious that you are an asshole, maybe even if you are the victim. From the cop's POV, not every encounter is clear cut! People lie to stay out of trouble, or just lie to the police because they don't want to get involved. And once in a while a cop gets shot for something trivial like a traffic stop, which means they have to be careful around EVERYONE.

Most people lie. Some of them want to kill me. Most of them are guilty of something or I wouldn't be here.

When this is how you see the world, it's going to change you.

These are not excuses. It just is what it is. You fear cops. They also fear you a little, and at the same time they look down on you. It takes a person of remarkable character to maintain sanity and propriety under those circumstances. Not everyone is up to the job. I don't blame anyone who wants to avoid cops, but I think it is sad that this is how things are.

I also think most cops should be recorded while on duty. They have a critically important job which also affords them great power. To prevent abuse the system must be as transparent as possible.
