I second the idea that LCDs are much better than CRTs for prolonged computer work. I've never had eye strain problems with LCDs. I don't wear contacts though.
I think it's obvious from the 'nice' command name. A program that is 'nicer' to others, by giving up resources that others want to use, has a higher value of 'niceness'.
On the other hand, 'core' is also used to refer to individual CPUs on the same silicon die. Thus 'Core Solo' and 'Core Duo' show the same kind of imaginative brilliance that brought us the word processor called 'Word' and the windowed user interface called 'Windows'. I'm looking forward to what the ingenious marketroids think of next.
Yeah, this reminds me of rsync which I use for backups and many other things. It's not the same thing, and I guess this technology is better in the way that you can recover any backup, not just the latest. Rsync "simply" keeps two filesystems in sync by transferring only the changes, so if you delete something before backing up, you cannot recover it.
In my opinion, many ponytailed geeks have much better looks than Einstein. While I'm not questioning that Einstein was a genius, I think he had an awful sense of style, even with a suit and a relatively (pun intended) short hair.
IMHO, it's possible for a man to dress really well without a suit, and to dress really badly with a suit. Many men have this twisted impression that a suit in itself guarantees good and 'professional' looks, and it's simply not true. It's in fact quite hard to make a suit look outstandingly good.
For example, I think the blue IBM suit looks awful on most men, if only for the simple fact that certain face and hair colors require 'warm' tones on clothing to make a nice combination.
..we raise our children to "not judge books by their cover", and then turn around and do just that.
Excellent point. I also think we need to look more deeply into the reasons why opensource people refuse to wear suits and the like. We tend to like openness and honesty, and therefore we have a problem with those who hide behind buzzwords and attire.
You know, my phone has an on/off button. It's up to me to decide when I want to be available. I can be unavailable at home, or available in the pub, if that's how I want it. That's the kind of freedom your good old phone cannot provide.
Disclaimer: I have a background in physics, and I think electrons are physical.
Nitpicking aside, it seems to me that the intent of the earlier settlement was to prevent Apple Computer from setting up a music distribution business. It's the spirit rather than the letter of a contract/law that should be honored IMHO.
Another thing is, that the 1GHz CPU is really slow. I ran into problem when playing DivX or XVid movies. Then under Linux (at least at the time I was building the system, dunno where they are at this point) there were no drivers for the Hardware-MPEG2 accelerator, so DVD playbay wasn't possible.
Strange... my EPIA MII, 1 GHz Nehemiah plays DivX, Xvid, DVD, you name it, just fine without using the MPEG2 acceleration. The only hardware acceleration is XVideo for fullscreen scaling. It probably helps that I use MPlayer on Gentoo.
I agree that the system is generally slow, for example my 1.6 GHz Centrino laptop is much faster. Something like 5 times faster in some cases, rather than just 1.6. But the EPIA machine is perfectly adequate for a media box.
Besides choosing another VIA EPIA model that does have two network interfaces, or using the PCI slot for a NIC, there's a somewhat neat software solution. You can actually NAT with a single NIC if you assign two IP addressess, and use a switch. It's probably not as secure as proper NAT, because you cannot separate the networks on an Ethernet level. On the other hand, local addresses like 192.168.0.0/16 are not routable, and thus not practically visible to the outside Internet.
I agree that the coolest watches are the most minimalist ones, and I'm a male (not that this tells anything about my sexual orientation;) My favourite watches are made by Storm, though I don't wear watches any more.
Ditto in Finland. The main impression I get from the ads is that they portray dumb people doing dumb things, while associating the entire ad with Microsoft.
For example, one ad has a bunch of people in an office, muttering to each other something like "Jack deleted all of our files again." I wonder how Microsoft is going to help with that? Not allow any file deletion? Thus MS gives the impression of catering for the dumbest of the dumb. Isn't there an unwritten rule in marketing not to underestimate your customers?
Religion > RFID/SCO/Microsoft/patents > Open source
in a decreasing order of evil? That would be perfectly logical. When you're discussing two items, it's OK to label one of them as 'the evil one', but in a grander scheme you can have different levels of evil, so to speak.
I think the reasoning is that, while RFID is perceived as mainly having 'evil' applications, it is still a relatively interesting technology, while religion is perceived as pure nonsense.

Except that Linux has cdparanoia that accomplishes the same.
Here.

Microsoft supports Linux... head explodes... what next? Cats and dogs living together?
A related solution is offered at the Zangelding official home page.
Besides, I think the pink theme is actually rather funny, at least when compared to all the other April fool's jokes that have been posted here today.
It's probably the pink stylesheet that some people associate with being gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that ;)
Anyway, I'll stick with good old carbon-14 dating.

How about sitting down with your children, and hitting them?-)

Fortunately, a true slashdotter will never have any contact with chicks.
