Cloud services need to avoid any type of actions that create the illusion that they may be responsible for what users do. As long as they never have any editing of any uses of their product they will probably not be held liable by the courts. In a way it is like the truck driver that opens the trailer door and sees what he is delivering. As long as he does not know what is in the trailer the law will not charge him with transporting illegal or stolen items. Intent and knowledge are locked together. Don't look, don't see and don't know.

  3. Big Files on Tunisian Gov't Spies On Facebook; Does the US? · · Score: 2

I had a position that may have involved technology that was a little sensitive for several years. At one point a disgruntled employee burglarized the personnel files and spread information around about various people. As it turned out the investigation of employees went back quite a few years and some of the compiled information had to be garnered from neighbors long since passed away. I know that postal employees are sometimes asked about people on their route but apparently at least in some cases there are very large sums of data that go back for several decades kept and available. I can only imagine our government having the time or interest to do such a search of people's backgrounds. I have never had even a misdemeanor and can not fathom why such files were kept on me. I was not in the military at any time. Apparently some employers must feed the government information about their employees or perhaps even their customers.
As I had nothing in particular to hide I found the incident upsetting but not to the degree that I sought to file suit against the firm involved. But I'm not so sure how free people are when the government can compile information to that degree upon its citizens. I am also assuming it was the government that did the leg work. It is quite possible that other entities do the compilations. In some areas the police kept or keep "yellow sheets". They do it indirectly through a benevolent fund or some other straw man so that they can deny in court that they have such information. Often when a crime takes place they seem to know exactly where to go to snag the culprits. They also really do know about certain machinists that would have special abilities useful in committing certain crimes such as machining a weapon from scratch or the ability to cut through safes due to work in armaments. These days certain areas of electronics might draw a great deal of governmental attention.

For those that think it doesn't matter we already allow corporations to run prisons in the US and it isn't much of a reach to think that they might export a burgler from Brooklyn to Egypt for fun and games knowing that that convict will surely perish in custody.

  9. We Need It! on Using Technology To Enforce Good Behavior · · Score: 1

One of the great conflicts we may see soon is the closing of traditional school buildings as electronic, at home education becomes the norm. That sets family against family in that those families in which the father and mother or single parent homes have no way to keep their kids doing their school work on computers. Yet homes with a stay at home parent as well as people who do not have children have no reason to support physical school properties. With modern electronics we can be certain that the child attends his online courses and that a truant officer soon arrives if the kid cuts classes. We can also make certain that the right student is answering the test questions.
Those employees who work at home can also be watched as well as offices where the business owner is frequently on the road. Drug sniffing technology can also track down illegal drug users or those that simply live in homes where illegal drugs are used. Employers may well get rid of people who have drug traces in their homes or molecules of drugs on their clothing. All in all it will simply keep people honest.

This is an area that leads into that zone of immense hazard concerning judgement of motives. Without knowing the actual abilities of our military how do I decide if he represents my interests. It makes a vote a joke. It also creates a condition where the state becomes the master having privileges that a person does not. For example they can study me endlessly and in great depth but I am not allowed to study them in any meaningful way. That really sets up a master and slave relationship between the citizen and the government. What kind of military do I want.                   Then there is the trickle down economy lie created by Reagen. Obviously that magical theory of economics was absurd and hatched by lunatics. Now we have right wing congressmen who are trying to revive that nonsense. We even have right wingers who want tax breaks for the rich under the absurd supposition that the rich will somehow create jobs in America if they have more money. Think about that for just a moment. If you were wealthy and wanted a big return on investment why on Earth would you invest it in the US? Why not buy a factory in China and earn some real money like everyone else or perhaps a factory in Mexico where labor is cheap? After all if you want to build yachts wouldn't it be better to pay $10. per day to a highly skilled worker in Mexico than pay $250. per day to a skilled worker in the US? And they'll let you pollute and make a mess of everything with a few bribes here and there.

There is more than one freedom bouncing around in the Bill of Rights. Freedom of association is exactly the same idea as freedom not to associate. Think about it. Were the founders so stark raving insane as to compel all people to associate all of the time? In other words freedom not to associate is part of your freedom and mine as well. Then it follows that some will say that we must associate unless certain exceptions are in play such as hiring people or choice of who we marry. That also will trash freedom as it opens you to examination of motives and inquiry by law enforcement and civil courts. For example a black woman with bleached blond hair fails to get a job and files a complaint. Was it her age, her skin color or bleached hair that caused her to be rejected? Maybe it was due to her blue eyes as refusing to hire people because of eye color is legal. Maybe you wanted to hire a man or a transvestite. Should law enforcement or any court have the right to interrogate you and pass judgement upon your motives? I think not.
I had a wretched mother in law who was an alcoholic, a red head, Jewish and the most rude woman I have ever known. I hated everything about her. If a person reminds me of her for any reason I wouldn't hire them as it just creeps me out to be around them.
