Wow. I'm speechless...that's just spooky...how did you know so much about me?

In all seriousness and putting aside all namecalling, you really need to step back and ask yourself, do you really honestly believe that anyone who is pro-Bush is an idiot? If you really do, you are going to have to write off a lot of your fellow Americans next November when Bush steamrolls over Dean (or whatever other chump the Dems nominate) with a 45+ state landslide. Ouch, that's going to hurt a bit.

But I suppose a year from now, you'll just retreat into your little happy world where everyone else is an idiot and you and your left wing friends are the only smart ones. Smart, but so very alone.

Your "personal view is that no one should make another suffer"--ok, that's nice, but why? Honestly, think about why you believe this. And moreover, why should anyone else have to follow your ideas? After all, in your world if I believe that it is our duty to make other people suffer, then you can't really tell me that my view is wrong, because you don't believe in right and wrong (remember?)

You've really dug yourself into a corner. If you want to argue about whether you think the U.S. position is right or not, that's an argument worth having. But if you don't want to even admit that you believe in right vs. wrong, then I'm sorry, I can't be bothered to waste any more time on a pathetic excuse for an argument like that.

How do you explain your inconsistency? On one hand, you don't believe in right or wrong. On the other hand, you somehow want the U.S. to "do the right thing". Which is it?

I find the phenomenon of a "Deaf subculture" interesting. Today there are deaf parents with deaf children who are reluctant to have their children outfitted with cochlear implants (which provide rudimentary hearing) because, among other reasons, they are happy with their child being a member of the "deaf community" and fear that having them able to hear will change that.

But why would parents not allow their child the chance to be able to hear when the chance is offered?

As a personal example, I stutter. I also have a new daugther born two months ago. Now, say that when she gets older she also starts to stutter. Say also that a new technology or technique is developed that can cure stuttering. Would I even consider not allowing my daughter to have this cure? Even if the cure only worked for children (and so I couldn't use it myself), I would not even hesitate to have my child's disability taken away from her. Why is deafness any different? I think it's become different because deaf people have isolated themselves so much that they have become a subculture, and the idea of losing a child to the mainstream culture overcomes the natural instinct that parents have to give their children the best life possible.

However, I realize that I may be way off base here. It would be especially interesting to hear from any deaf /.ers who have a personal experience with cochlear implants.

See this position paper for more background material on a deaf parents' organization's position on cochlear implants.

Enlighten me, how did, for example, WWII make things "worse" than the problems those fighting it were "seeking to solve"? If you think we would have been better off not fighting WWII, I'm sorry, but you are living in a dreamworld.

You are partially right when you say that "The only lasting methods of social change are nonviolent". But you don't go far enough. The only lasting way to change society is to change people's hearts. The root cause of all war is self-centeredness, jealousy, and pride. If these problems can be solved, there truly won't be a need for war. How to do this? Well, the only way I know of is through a regeneration of the mind, done through the radical process of becoming a follower of Jesus. I know this is not a popular position on /., but you did bring it up. :)
