This offer of Free games sounds just like Turkish Delights in Narnia. Steam does not care about the games, it is all about extending the DRM'd platform. The more people use Steam (and Steam's DRM) the more Steam can tell developers that to reach a sizeable market they have to be part of Steam and use Steam's DRM.
It's all about the platform and its network effects. The larger the platform, the more relevant it becomes, the worse off we will be (as someone who decided NOT to purchase Civ V just because it uses Steam's DRM.
Ha, you want security and trust? Remember Ken Thompson's C Compiler Backdoor Make sure you built your PC out of sillicon yourself! Otherwise, you have to rely on someone else's code:
It used to be that Data was kept on PAPER. Huge reams of paper gave you the incentive to get rid of it every certain time else you would need to purchase expensive real state to save it. Nowadays that data exist on hard drives who get cheaper every month.
It will be very difficult to devise a law to encourage people to get rid of data effectively. .
I totally agree. To make the Silmarillion in Movie format would be a huge mistake. I think they should be bold enough and go for a series (1 year only, no more) or mini-series format. There is enough material for a whole Season (24 episodes) !!
Remember also that UK works at 50hz, while US works at 60Hz, therefore your computer will run slower. It will make your game reactions slower, your searches will run slower and he clock will run slower.
If you get rid of IE6 like this, you are forcing people to upgrade also to Win7!!! Remember, there is no Internet Explorer 7 for Win2k, All of us who have stayed away from Win XP and and Vista due to its dumb activation code will have to upgrade to Win7, because Mozilla is not always the answer.
He is not that far from the mark. Probably Win2K lacks the thingy that allows the DRM to hook it's evil fangs into your machine in such a way that nothing will work right if you try to deefeat it or play around it.
Really, where is the Windows 2000 Version? There are lots of us who did not want to tangle with XP and stayed at Windows 2K and still, we are productively using our computers. I am slowly migrating to Linux, unless Windows have anything compelling to keep me on the Windows camp
Am I the only one to think that it is quite peculiar that it is happening 9 days before the Government turns over? I mean, how much difficult could it be to say that some sensitive/embarrasing mails got lost during this crash? I think this should be looked into in more detail and make double sure that no mail was "lost".
> For TV/PVR functionality, it's great. Want to watch a DVD or, gods forbid, a video file? Prepare for an exercise in pain.
What pain? Just drop it somewhere Myth knows to look.
If you have a more "complicated" setup. You will need to tell Myth to scan your collection again to pick up the new movie.
Unless it's in a less common format. For example, anime fansubs are often found in Matroska (mkv) containers with subtitles and even multiple audio tracks built in. Back to remapping...
There's more to watching a video than just copying it onto the system. And I've never been able to just put it on the system and watch it without doing the rescan. All my videos are in/myth/video.
Not to mention the lack of NAS media server support.
Says who? I have the video directory mapped to a linux media server through NFS and it works perfect. I even have subdirectories to separate the series I have recorded to view later. I usually nuexport them to video in order to save space on the mythtv box
Please specify what law are you basing your argument on. Nothing in law supports your reasoning. In fact DMCA forbids it. As a copyright owner you have to specify under oath (perjury) exactly the thing that infringes your copyright for the website to take it down. The website owner does not have to go on a hunting spree. As it is, Desktop Nexus should simply ignore it because it is not a proper DMCA take down notice, and if the idiot lawyers should prosecute, they should be counter demanded for negligent practice plus damages, plus pain and suffering

On the other hand, imagine the parallelizing opportunities with thousands and thousands of such gates!

So I am paying for my bandwidth twice, first to receive the message and a second time for it to be forwarded to TPTB. Talk about being fsckd!

Not right. DMCA allow you to circumvent for interoperation purposes.
While we are at it, let us ban kitchen knives!!! How many young ones learn and practice how to slice and dice people while eating their read meat!
We are becoming the Aldenata!
