Doesn't it strike you guys as odd that they are reducing the number of shares as well as the price by so much? It's like doing a stock buyback before the ipo.

Also, you guys are forgetting that the price of a share doesn't reflect a company's "worth" whatever that is. It reflects how much people are willing to pay for it.

There is a lot of goodwill built up towards google, especially among internet-savvy nerdalingers like yourselves.

I advise everybody to write a bunch of uncovered calls on this stock asap. hooah

  11. analogy on Projecting Video On Curved Surfaces · · Score: 0

(to me) this is just like using an EQ in a stereo. The idea behind the eq is to obtain an accurate playback of the original recording, where the eq fixes the "flaws" in your system and your environment.

In fact, there are audio systems where you take a microphone and it listens to test sounds and the eq can auto adjust. Similarly there are systems to calibrate home theater projectors autonomously.

This particular idea is like a natural extension. Good Job to Jun. Prof. Dr. Ing. Oliver Bimber.

  16. machine learning on Incorporating Machine Learning into Firefox 2.0? · · Score: 0

Here's one idea, around the framework and deployment:

To do learning, you'll probably need lots of data points for training (given these inputs, this (un)desirable outcome occurred).

Basically, when doing machine learning, you select a portion of your training data for actual training and use the rest for evaluating the performance.have some body of data that you'd select some percentage out of for training and use the rest for evaluating the performance.

Now you could do model building in a few different ways, not mutually exclusive. (1) do learning in-house, ship models to users periodically. (2) do learning in-browser, looking for cues that a positive or negative outcome has been reached by observing the user or environment.

Maybe it would be interesting for browsers to share their learnings back with firefox headquarters. Their fancy computers back at HQ could do some number crunching and test hypotheses by sending different updated models to different segments of the browser population.

This wouldn't work for a coporate setting, but more for the diy crowd that firefox seems to have attracted. A lot of firefox users probably already run software that already auto-communicates back to other servers to transfer info, like SETI, protein folding, photon soup rendering, bittorrent, .......

I wonder how many of the people who are so indignant about the idea that anyone could consider "master/slave" offensive are black? Although folks who post to slashdot know what "niggardly" means, that doesn't mean it's not offensive to people. For example, what do you think "noisome" means? When you use "whom" in conversation it doesn't always sound natural, and when you say "niggardly" in Washington DC you sound racist. The real loss in this situation is that there is a network of white nerds all over the world sniggering about this issue posting to message boards and looking up words like "noisome" and "niggardly" on the internet when they should be out saving the world with their irony and sarcasm and enjoyment of ethnicky jazz.
