Only problem is it keeps the settings in the registry. Put them in an ini file for easier reconfiging and it'd be 100% perfect.

So...what actually could fall under the NDA that is not GPLed?

File locations? Config files? Any code that UL has added on.

So what if the beta people get gcc, the kernel and bash and redistribute that or get the source code - probably the same from the gnu site.

Nothing lost to UL. But one should not assume that EVERYTHING on the system is GPL'ed. Perhaps UL has written some uber-cool init scripts that aren't GPL'ed.

It doesn't sound like UL is even giving them that much leeway though, but it does make for an easy out for UL.

  5. Re:Ehm......about that closed beta... on Is UnitedLinux Violating The GPL? · · Score: 2

But if they are not the original copyright holders on the code (ie te Linux kernel) then they can not modify the license that code is under.

Sure...they can say that they are giving the testers the code under the NDA, but that does not change the license that the kernel, gcc, etc... comes under in anyway. Since UL is using the GPL'd code, they MUST pass those rights on to whoever they distribute it to - with not further restrictions - or not use the code.

So if they sign the NDA, that can't invalidate the GPL clauses.

Anyway - definatly get Afraid of Sunlight as well. If you heard Marillion in the 80's (not that it's bad) and din't like their sound, these two albums are a departure from the old "punchy synth" sound. One of the tracks on Afraid is even just in mono...real cool.

  15. The whole windows install problem on Apple Explains Interface Differences · · Score: 2

While I am convinced that the default option on InstallShield is to prompt the user to reboot, cause it seems almost every win install does just that - needing it or not, the windows install process is still a major pain that doesn't need to be.

I am trying to think why you would need to do anything other than move the files in place. On the Mac you just drag and drop. While install scripts may complicate things on Unix systems somewhat, they basically boil down to "move these files from the CD or this location to the final location." If it wasn't for the whole make process, most software installed boil down to "cp -R . /opt/whatever"

    Simplicity.

So why are windows installs so horrendus? I can see driver installs needing to do something special, but registry settings can be setup the first time the program is run, registrations/proof-of-purchase/warez-serials can be done at the first run of the app.

In fact, if decompression from a file is the only reason to run an install program, I'd prefer it if they just left the files on the CD as they need to be. That way, if I was to hose photoshop.dll, I could just recopy it from the CD and not have to reinstall.

If you need to dumb it down a bit, make the autorun say "you just put in this CD - wanna install it?" and if they choose to do so, then make a directory and copy the files there...nothing arcane needed.
