One can only hope that Oracle DB will follow Solaris in the slow death by free software, Oracle has an history of trying to monetize what can be had for free and failing miserably. I wonder how fast they will manage to kill Java given their current history of alienating customers.

  4. I know, this is going to turn down to be a major headache for Nintendo!

I remember how they clamped down on the Zelda "Epona" bug, and were patching the OS to close all software attack vectors. They even modified the soldering of the chip to counter modchips... But they are not going to have it that easy this time.

But if they don't do it, they risk selling a lot of consoles, but hardly any game. I am sure they are already trying to find a way to patch it. Maybe, keeping some online aspect that will check if the system was hacked will be part of the solution.

I kept my first smartphone (First gen Samsung Galaxy S) for over 5 years. I unlocked the phone, got rid of carrier ROM, and later switched to Cyanogenmod.

When I buy a phone, first criteria is to check I can unlock the bootloader. Then I check it is supported by Lineageos (or will be shortly because it has strong following on Xda-Dev.)
I always keep my phones up to date via OTA, and can give them away (to friends or to my daughter) once I want to purchase a more recent model.
Now that Google made their phones too expensive, I am going the Xiaomi route.

I'd agree if Apple didn't try to make it impossible for users to change their battery!
Making the thing hard to open, gluing everything inside, charging $90 for swapping and putting too small batteries in their phone is ground to sue alone.
Apple is going out of their way to try to get people to buy a new phone instead of fixing the one they already own, and they are known for it, so this is just the straw that broke the camel's back.

Since people are too stupid to vote with their wallet, someone has got to do it. And I hope other's will follow, and not just Apple which is probably the worst offender but definitely not alone.
All electronics should be fixable, batteries should be accessible and changeable without voiding warranty. Repair guides for repair shops should be mandatory. Connectors (and chargers) should be standard.

And here comes the car analogy: if apple made cars, you could only service them in apple garages to fit new apple tires and apple brake pads. Does this sound reasonable?

It is so involving and intense. You are IN the game not just watching it... I believe playing it in VR, is the only real way to play the game.

Can't wait for a plateform player. The robot mini-game just shows the potential. I was hoping they would make the Crash Bandicoot remaster a VR option, but it doesn't look likely. A new Armored Core by From Software is also an option for the next big VR title. I'd love to see Bloodborne 2 in VR as well (one can only hope.)

  20. my own experience... on Correlation Between Stress and Technology? · · Score: 1

Yes, tech is adding to my stress because I work as a software engineer...
But stress is added by any job unless you have found the dream job that is only fun (testing games come to my mind ;o)
I am working on a finance project since I work for a Swiss private bank. The stress is not due to the tech aspect though, but because of nasty hacks in the code (and process) to accept all the crap the users want to be the norm.
We had to archive 2003 for end of January, but it wasn't possible since the data was wrong and could not be corrected for that date. So we had to keep the data in the DBs for a little longer. That didn't work straight away (we use an embedded object db that dates from 97) so there was an interresting crisis update to the current version (with some modifications) but that was fun.
Now the trouble is to migrate the data and put in place all the hacks so that we store correct data. To do that, we needed some files and we got them on wednesday night while we were aiming to get everything ready for Thursday night...
We managed it, but I had to put lots of extra-time (non paid) just because the upper management was tooo slow to get those files. Not just because they were lazy but because lot's of problems showed up during testing and we realised things were a LOT harder than we thought.
So, in my opinion, stress is not due to technology but to humans using it. And humans being humans, they just think technology is going to solve all their problems. AND FAST!

Well, that's my view of the problem anyway.

They were using 1000 years old technology: the pencil. A pencill can work underwather and into space without some complex system putting pressure for the ink.
