Given how many problems there are with current DVD support, I am not surprised to see that Sony is working on improving it.
Most PS2 owners I know use the PS2 as their main DVD reader, even if the current PS2 is quite bad at it. I own one and there are many DVDs it can not read anymore. This is really annoying.

I was considering buying a new one (so I could also link them together to play with friends.) After all, having two TV is a good way to play PS2 games, and watch TV at the same time. It's a must when you're just building up your team in RPGs or doing the endurance races in GT3.

I was thinking of making my next laptop my multimedia platform, but if there is an improved PS2 I might decide otherwise.

Anyway, great move from Sony. Nearly as great as lowering the price...

  9. Re:OO databases are an evolutionary step...backwar on Object Prevalence: Get Rid of Your Database? · · Score: 1

Ok, let me try to answer this question.
You can query objects with attribute X. There are two ways to do that:
    - have a collection containing a pointer to all the objects you want to query and add an index (to the collection) on the attribute
    - get a list of all the objects of a given type (there is an API to do this, and usually even some graphical tools), and do your query on that resulting collection (of course there will be no index so it will be slower)

But I agree with what someone said elsewhere, Oracle and co are good at data storage whereas OODB is better at dealing with objects since most of its performance boost can come from the cache.
So there are things you can do best with Oracle and things best done with OODB.

Some people need the kind of real time performance that Oracle simply can not provide.

  10. Re:OODB are very different from RDBMS on Object Prevalence: Get Rid of Your Database? · · Score: 1

  11. OODB are very different from RDBMS on Object Prevalence: Get Rid of Your Database? · · Score: 3, Interesting

and like in every object system, it is very important you get the design (and objects) right before you start coding.

If you are thinking of accessing your objects like you are doing with SQL, then you haven't understood how OODB work. As for accessing your objects and doing your queries, there are tools (like Inspector for ObjectStore) than enable you to do just that.

In term of performance, Oracle and co are nowhere near what you can reach with ObjectStore, provided you designed your application well.
The 2 main problems with OODB, are:
    - schema evolution
    - reporting
But these can easily be solved by a good design of your application.

OODB is a skill that needs time mastering. After 4 years, seeing ObjectStore application from various companies, I can tell the difference between the ones where people knew what they were doing, and those from people who didn't have a clue...

    Ok, here goes my story...

I was way overweight (95kg), doing no sports and drinking too much.
So I decided to get my health back...

I started on a very strict diet (no crappy food like hamburger) which was mainly salad, pasta and with fish and chicken being the only meat... The trick there is to eat less and count the calories. My aim was to loose 2kg per month (1 pound a week) so I tried to eat for about 1500 calories a day.
Of course, I had to cut dramatically on alcohool (no more beer.)

After the first month, to keep motivation going, I joined a gym and started exercising (mainly cardio) for 1 hour 3 times a week.
I also did a lot of walking during the WE (the trick for that is: don't use your car!)

I gradually increased the gym workout (because I started liking it) and after about 8 month, I reached my ideal weight of 70kg.

Now, I am training about 1-2 hours a day (doing mostly running, cycling and swimming) and am running triathlons. I have never been as fit and really like my body (and apparently, so do women ;o)

My conclusion on all this is that what you really need is motivation. Eating a healthy diet and exercising helps a lot. Loosing weight and building up your body is a lengthy process, so you have to get yourself a goal and keep on working to reach it!

Now the rest of the exhibit was featuring some computer games and many console games as well. But this did not bring much since you can play this using an emulator (the original joypad are not much better than any cheap PC joypad.) The recent games (X-Box, PS2 and GameCube, PC...) can all be played in video games stores.

There were also some cool material on some games but not much more than what you would find in the preview section of any game magazine. And also some handheld I remember playing as a kid.

So was it worth it? I would say yes if you are really into retro gaming (and are an avid MAME fan like me who wants to play the original thing), but I would not go to London just for that!
Go The End/AKA to do some serious clubbing the night before (it's both good fun, and get's you in the right mood to play video games ;o)

If you are into more modern games (late 80' and 90's area), keep your £11 and go to the Trocadero and play R360. That's some wicked game!
