There's been a lot of discussion about Linux being better.. OS X being better... what one can do on either platform.
The truth is, this shouldn't be an argument. First, it's unconstructive. Second, it's inherently wrong.
The truth is that Mac OS X wouldn't exist without Unix, and all of us Mac users should be damn grateful to the Unix and even the Linux community as well as the entire open source community.
Xserve's a wonder, OS X Server is getting better all the time. But Linux has its place -- as does Windows (for now.....)
We all have a common goal. The spread of creativity and community work via open-source, and the improvement of enterprise, office, and home productivity with the best computers and operating systems in the world.
Unix gives OS X enterprise viability and a rock-solid foundation. OS X gives Unix commercial viability and longevity.
That's why there's an Apple section on Slashdot. That's why Apple went (semi-)open-source. That's why OS X is Unix and based on BSD. And that's why we're on the same team.
Whoa.. wait... what's happening? I'm the FIRST post?
So, okay, here's the deal. I don't think there's anything wrong with net taxes. It should just force companies to be more competetive with Internet pricing -- the same Internet that helps productivity and lowers the cost of making many of their products to begin with.
No net taxes were about building infrastructure -- we're beyond that today.
Just so you're aware -- which you're apparently not -- Apple is a section of Slash. apple.slashdot.org. Therefore, here, you'll read a lot about Apple - something you don't seem too interested in.
It's very newsworthy among the Unix/apple community that Darwin's been changed.
If you're interested in Domino and ORacle AS, there are appropriate places to go for that.
I'm sure confident in the validity of this article. Yes, they're right: I entered "flowers" and most of what I saw would lead me to buying flowers.
Yet their claim is weakened by the fact that if I enter "flower research," suddenly I see very, very little related to shopping, but instead to the research I'm seeking.
It all depends on the search scheme. If the claim that Google is so heavily weighted towards marketing and shopping were true, then "flower research" would have led me to buy flowers.
I would also note that "flowers" on MSN.com returns:
Yeah.. I am SO sick of these pesky engineers always *claiming* to have developed power-independent hovercraft-like levitating vehicles with no moving parts, when all they're doing is harnessing the power of ionic winds! Sheesh!
Hats off to NASA for stopping this ridiculous claim and setting the truth straight!
A good point, because it truly isn't Apple fault these independent software developers are going out of business. Apple's simply improving their own product with features it *should* have.
Why, that'd be like blaming Microsoft for putting out similar companies simply because Microsoft is constantly striving to improve Windows' features and functionality.
Oh, wait.. Well, no wonder there's so much more independent/shareware programs out there for Windows!;-)
It took a story about Dell dropping the floppy to remind me I haven't used one in about HALF A DECADE!
Everyone bitched when Apple pushed Mac users off the floppy (*PC* uses made fun of Apple for doing it -- as if it affected them)... and after all the fuss, I'd have to say the floppy drive was a terrible device. I find it amazing PCs still use them! It just seems so old and useless. Glad to see Dell doing something... even if it still isn't very innovative.
You're a fool. Being able to code has nothing to do with 90% of the topics on slashdot. Furthermore, if you contend that most people on here can't code -- then I find it interesting we still do have such intelligent conversations.
So you're assumption that knowing ObjC or perl is a prerequisite to being smart and holding an informed conversation is silly.
"The people who use NIST's Internet Time Service range from Windows XP and Mac System X users"
If they're not informed enough to call it Mac OS X (and the last time apple used "System" was before Mac OS 8 came along... which was a longggggggggg time ago), then I don't trust the rest of the article, either. So I don't care, and I'm going to use Network Time to set my clock right now, just to spite that stupid Microsoft Windowed TP-user.
I think it's a bit silly you contend that XM is so money hungry (though you don't offer any real evidence of it), and yet your only sig text is a link to buy a graphics card.
Nintendo is so influential (at least it was in my life as a kid), that I STILL play Zelda: A Link to the Past on an SNES emulator for my Mac.
I converted to Playstation when Sega and Nintendo began to fade. Zelda 64, in my opinion, sucked... but I am confident "ZeldaCube" could be pretty good. Will I buy a GameCube to play it? If it brings back the mystery of exploration (like Link to the Past did but 64 did not do as well), I just might actually.
I love my PS2... but I do miss good ole Nintendo games.
That's all well and good. You can say, "we should've had this 18 months ago!" Well, you could've -- but it wouldn't have been $999, that's for sure.
I just think it's so funny when people say we should've had products months and years ago. Well, I bought a new iMac 6 months ago (a flower power CDRW with 384MB ram) and I've found it to be a GREAT value, packed with features and runs OS X great. I like the 40GB drive, too.
I also just bought a newer iMac with LCD screen, and it too is a fantastic value. G4! =)
Of course.. in a year there will be a much, much better iMac. Certainly it should exist now at today's prices.
Grrr. I demand a refund + monthly interest from May of 2001 to today!
Finally I'll be able to play SimCity 4!!
I must have mistakingly found this article on the best type of pen to write with.
Could someone please direct me to the Slashdot Web site?
So, I'm glad this update fixes Ethernet problems in Dual 500 systems..
Unfortunately my new eMac still won't restart, shutdown, or logout -- and still have the other problems associated with the original 10.2.8 Update.
Great work, Apple. Is a not-f*ed up eMac a selling point for buying Panther, now?

man... i wasn't the first or the last post..
I just suck.
Ha!! Last post!

You mean people actually own these things in any volume to merit recalling them??

will this work only on OS X Server or can it work on OS X "Client"... 10.2.6?
unfortunately it's now found speed increases the temperature, and [sic] only burns the disk
but I thought you were supposed to burn discs....

Whatever.
I mean, come on. The television *must* start up to Channel 447 - "Gates Gone Wild, Doggie Style."
It's just another ridiculous Microsoft ploy.
Yes.. thank you for replying to my thread and rephrasing it into a longer message. I uhh, completely agree with you, therefore. :-)

HOLY
FUCKING
SHIT.

Certainly not to blame -- but still blatantly illegal.

I guess this gives a new meaning to the term "network traffic."
