Actually I meant to click to reply to another posters question about how high the mark up is on games as best I could based on my experiences. But I clicked wrong.

  3. I worked @ CompUSA for a few years on Game Retailers Make Money On The Margins · · Score: 1

And bought my games with their employees-get-cost discount. Typically on console games that was in the area of 10-12$ less than retail (which was the typical 49.99). So around 38-40 dollars is what CompUSA paid for each console game. PC games had a bit more mark up, usually around 15-17$, to bring them to 49 if they were a "top tier" release. I heard from people at other chains (Best Buy for example) that their cost was slightly lower, perhaps because, compared to CompUSA, they had more retail outlets and bigger sales.

As the prices went down, the margins dropped too. A lot of times CompUSAs 9.99 games then were costing them 8 bucks and change.

The main focus here is the storytelling. If you read the article you're limited to a 4x4 tile, 4 characters (one PC), and you can't have combat. At first, I thought the same thing you did, but after reading the rules, quickly realized that it is more than doable.

As an aside, I myself became rooted in the same position as you. I was recreating The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, but became frustrated with the tedium (especially since I'm a perfectionist and would completely restart each area if it just didn't feel "right"). I may wait for NWN2 and see how the modifications to the tools I've read about turn out and maybe continue my Zelda: ALTTP mod.

  14. Re:Forget other players. Here's what I want. on What Kind Of Star Trek MMO Do You Want? · · Score: 1

What I would like to see is a dynamic mission system. The exact scale of it could be as simple (go here, do this, get attacked, win/die). However if this is going to be a long term game (hence the MMO status), this could start out simplistic, and if designed right from the start, be fleshed into a huge vat of content for players.

To clarify what I'm talking about, it would be akin to Diablo's random dungeon generator. Every time you start a new game from the beginning, the dungeons are laid out differently. In "Star Trek Online", your missions would offer up different objectives, and you could play them out as far as you wanted. When you and your ships crew gets bored you can end the mission after completing that goal.

Galaxies has a similar system called Duty Missions, but the biggest problem with them is they don't diverge much from being "go here, shoot these guys" missions that just repeat. If it broke it up into ground/space and you uncovered small bits of little stories, they would probably be more worth their time.

I realize the complexity of a system like this, but like I said, for a long term MMO, what else do they have to do? If they lay the proper foundation for a system that can be fleshed out now, this could snowball as the game goes along and become a really interesting take on gameplay. IMHO that is.

  17. Slight fanboy rant on How The Revolution Will Change Games Forever · · Score: 2, Insightful

Look at how crazy successful games like DDR are. My sister in high school saved money with friends so they could buy a nice DDR pad. They get a bunch of people together some weekends and create tournaments. Otherwise they don't play video games.

If the Revolution (games) can deliver on creating that sort of experience even on a infrequent basis (not every game, but 3-4 a year), it could signal a shift in how some developers think.

However there is still a huge demand for "traditional" games too, but the Rev has that covered with the ability to use GC controllers (unlike the PS3 and Xbox where you have to buy all new hardware.) Yeah I'm a slight Nintendo fanboy, but if I weren't, I'd still be more interested in the Revolution than the competition, because I'm a gizmo nerd first and formost.
