  4. Missed the biggy..feature creep on Why the iPod is Losing its Cool · · Score: 1

Of course there are some basic answers like "all those who are interested in one now own one".

But I think the biggy is apples fault and gets worse with every generation. Feature Creep. The iPod was designed right at first. It did one thing and did it very well, play music. They keep adding features that have nothing to do with music, like photos, video and such. It's diluting what the thing is. Non of those things make it play music better, but they do clog the interface up more and make it overall a more complicated device (may just be software, but there is still more code to go wrong).

Same thing with phones. People are growing increasingly agree with them since they can't get a true phone, it has 50 million non-phone things in it clogging it up.

Apple has made the iPod less attractive every generation, they add some good (bigger capacities, smaller body, and such) but it gets offset. But there are no real alternatives, since frankly the competition sucks. So people just wait. Apple right now will just be calling the iPod the 2.5" Macbook before too long

  5. Re:OLPC Project Laptops on Billions Donated to Charity · · Score: 1

For starters, good luck at getting a laptop to every kid at once.

Next, I'd like to see any proof that a laptop, or a computer for that matter has ever benefited the education of a child. From the way things look in the US. Computers in schools have made our children dumber, not smarter.

The other part is you cannot have a society take short cuts. Societies/countries have to evolve through steps, you can't go in and just skip big periods of time and expect it to work, you will throw off the balance of things. Like anything in nature, you can't have an eco system, and then dump something into it in a large quantify and not expect it to disrupt the place in a destructive way. It has to happen over time for the surroundings to adapt to it properly.

You can't have a 3rd world country go straight to a tech economy and skip things like industrial revolutions, advances in agriculture, building of proper infrastructures and so forth. Yes, it would be nice if it could, but it just won't happen.

I can see a load of these laptops showing up. Kids bang on them for a bit, they break, next thing you know they have found a good use for them, like as a paver stone so they don't get their feet covered in mud.

Have you ever heard of Robin Hood?

Take from the rich, give to the poor. That's what Gates and Buffet have pulled off. They take excess money from those who have to much, and then apply to to proper causes. Since the people the money came from wouldn't have done it.

But then technically, they took nothing, Gates found a way for people to give them their money.

  8. Re:OLPC Project Laptops on Billions Donated to Charity · · Score: 2, Insightful

Yeah, cause laptops are what children in need, need most.

Learning how to develop sustaining agriculture, water treatment plants, proper housing, ending civil unrest, modernizing infrastructure, suppressing the spread of disease.... yeah, laptop should come first.

Lets give kids laptops, so then the kids that didn't get one can feel shafted and kill the first kid for their laptop.

Only a hardcore geek could in any way think a laptop program is important. What's next. Dungeons and Dragons Aid.

  9. Who killed the EV....Physics on Smithsonian Removes EV1 Exhibit · · Score: 3, Interesting

Who killed it, Physics. There is only so much energy you can put into a battery. Hulling around 50% of the cars mass in batteries (as is the case of the EV) is not very efficient. Nor is the whole concept when you factor in the energy creation from (coal, oil whatever) to end disposal of the car.

EVs have nice performance and are can be fun cars. But there is a practical side that needs to be factored in. They typical person may have a EV capable commute, but odds are they also make a few trips a year that are outside the range of the car. That alone makes them a no go for most people. Also they tend to be small 2 seat vehicles. Which again are not practical for most people. People want 1 vehicle that does it all.

Furthermore, hybrids are far more practical in the end and much more environmentally friendly from an entire life cycle standpoint. That's why all the car companies killed their EV programs (EV1, S10, Ranger, Epic.. All now dead).

The EV1 was also not that spectacular. I've worked on one. It's a 1980s tech car developed by Aerovironment and sold to GM to put into production. It was a very crude and dated car when it went into production. GM dumped 2 billion into the program, and never even leased 1000 units in the couple years the program ran. They lost money hand over fist on it. It also had technical problems of the charge port catching the car on fire which was the final nail in the coffin.

EVs do have a place. Fleet service they can work out well for. There you have a fixed usage, daily schedules you can use it around. So the limits of an EV are not a problem. And the durability is a plus. But for consumer usage, they just aren't there.

Now if you manage to make a battery pack that fits in a 13 gallon space, and has the same amount of energy as 13 gallons of gasoline, and weights the same. Now you are on to something. But that isn't going to happen tomorrow.

  13. Re:Meant for whom? on eSATA External Storage Drive Reviewed · · Score: 1

I've been trying to get such a setup going for a while, but in general, eSATA companies are awful. Firmtek has been an awful company, so I look forward to this. But sadly I can't find anyone who sells it.

Such a solution is great for a lot of people. Think digital photography types. We can produce insane amounts of data in no time (I took 30 gig of photos just this weekend on a trip). You can't keep up with internal storage. And for people like me who have a Powermac, you are limited to 2 internal drives. So a 8 port eSATA card plus units like this and away we go. The problem is vendors are few and far between. Prices are high, performance is not what it should be, and the companies are just plain bad to work with. But compared to other solutions, its great. Just the fact it has the potential to be fast enough to work with photos stored on the drive, unlike other solutions like FW or USB which are too slow.

If this company pans out and actually is selling this thing someplace and the price is right, I will have one on order. I wish it was made clear if this is doing some port multiplier inside or what since it only had 1 cable going to it.
