If the guy took his idea to every major car maker, he wasn't keeping it a secret. He had the proper protection in place. I don't think that many companies would try to steal an idea right out from under you now as they all know they are going to get sued, and if you have your patent in place then you ideas are protected.
Oh and before Apple made it big, Steve Wozniak was giving away plans for the Apple I and Microsoft got it start by developing BASIC and DOS, neither of which were actually originally Microsoft ideas.

As long as the power company can recoup most/all of the added expense from the customer, they won't have any impetus to switch anything at all. The trick to that plan is to make cleaner technologies more profitable. Ideally there would be competition in the market so you could choose a cleaner, and therefore cheaper, power company.
No they probably won't care about your laptop, unless you make it easy for them to catch someone. The amount of leg work required vs the chance of catching someone aren't in your favor normally. If you tell them that your laptop is accessing ISP X with IP address x.x.x.x at 7:27pm. and here is the number to the ISP, it makes their life simple. They will be much more likely to do the work especially when all it requires is them to go knock on a door and get your stuff.

The problem isn't with "patent holding companies" but more with the patents they are given. It's perfectly legitimate for a company to buy someone else's IP and then go after companies that haven't licensed it from them. The original patten holder may not have had the cash or the willingness to market their patent. And if a small company holds a patent on something it's difficult for them to fight a company that is using there technology if they don't have deep enough pockets.
So why not sell it off to someone that can do something with it.
Now I'm not saying that this is what NTP is doing, but that is how the process should be working.

But I'm guessing the greatest minds don't cite Wikipedia as proof of there conclusions. As great as wikipedia is, for the most experts are not writing the articles. I would think that anyone beyond high school would be using more recoignized research material.
That's not to say that it doesn't have it's place in research. I think it's an excelent starting point. But being usered edited means you have to check the information

Really if could be something that is sort of attached to the IIS, floating with in reach of the arm and attached with teathers when it's actually taking photos. . That would take care of angles and vibrations. That would just leave the orbit problem.
But really what do I know. There is a reason I'm not building satelites myself.
