Everything does not look the same. There are very common patterns that you will begin to spot almost immediately, like:

    (defun func (args)
      code)

    (let ((bindings
          bindings))
      code)

    (do ((bindings
          bindings))
        (stop-form ret-form)
    ..code..)

And so on. As a lisp programmer these things will immediately register when you look at lisp source.

I've got an AV500 and a 605 and I love both. Both are great but since getting the 605 I haven't used the 500 much. I never had any hard drive problems with either (I have had the 500 for several years) and I have never baby'd them either. I think both have beautiful screens, especially the 605 because of the much higher resolution. No, the 605 is not perfect but its a damn good unit. The hard drive does not 'spin all the time', it comes on periodically while watching. Battery life is about 4-5 hours. Using a tekkeon battery pack with 2700 nimh AAs plugged into the minidock I can get about 9 hours. Also I can do things like stream video from my uPnP server. On the negative side I have heard bad things about Archos support. Luckily I haven't had to call them yet.

  25. Re:HandBrake. on Fewer People Copy DVDs Than Once Thought · · Score: 1

Actually copying a DVD, as in making a disc from another disc, seems like a waste of time. It's like copying CDs. Who uses CDs anymore? The price of storage is low enough that I can have my entire movie and video collection on my MythTV box, ready to watch with just a few presses of the remote.

Yeah I'm actually amazed that everyone on the thread seems to be focused on copying a DVD to a blank DVD. Its like when you see someone who is still carrying around CDs instead of MP3s. What's the point? I make a backup of the VOBs (for archival purposes) and then convert the VOB into AVI/divx so that I can watch it on my TV set using a NETGEAR set top digital media player or move it to a portable player. I store everything on my NAS.

Recommended software: DVDshrink (rip DVDs (except newer sonys)), PocketDivxencoder/Lathe (convert the VOB to AVI/DIVX - nice because has lots of presets for portables), IMtoo mpeg encoder (great at general video encoding/conversion, e.g. flv to divx), Videoredo (cut the commercials out of your .tivo files, save as mpeg)
