  1. Re:The game as it's own law on Experts Discuss Virtual Theft And Real Crime · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think this is a testament to just how much a person can percieve a false reality as a true one. In our own reality, people questioned the rules. "I can kill, but is it right?" The rational assumption that just because something is possible does not make it acceptable. The same rationale is being applied to these virtual worlds by the players, "Just because they can steal, does that make it right?"

Of course, it helps to have someone firmly planted in true reality to rationally sort out all this nonsense. If it breaks the rule of the code (ie- hacking) then it's legally questionable, but otherwise.. feh. Interesting, none-the-less.

For one, not everyone is as nice as you, YOU DAMN CAMPER! :)

For two, camping can be a strategy, sure, but it's a grey area topic due to the bad level design factor. Games should be fun for the largest number of players and a good level designer must keep that in mind at all times. If a level designer creates a map that permits a camper to be safe from harm, then it's a bad level design because it caters to a single player. Good level design allows for campers to exist, but makes it possible for campers to be taken out with the proper amount of skill by an opposing player. Everyone will blame the camper, but it's the level designers fault if a camper has to be asked politely before there is resolve.

    ...allow me to summarize:
"Waaaaah. Name calling. Waaaah. Too hard. Waaaah. but I'm not a sore loser, honest!"

The personal restraint people have in reality comes from a fear of getting beat up? What the hell is he talking about? If you've ever, like the author, allowed another player to beat you because he was bigger than you in real life, guess what? You're a coward and a wimp. Sorry, I'm not just another anonymous ghost flaunting the vocal freedoms of the internet. It's just real simple. You're a wuss.

Personal restraint comes from respect not fear. When you have a face to the player your up against it recieves an instant amount of respect. Maybe not much for some, but enough for most to only make a few simple cracks and leave it at that if anything. The abusive behaviour by the cyber athletes is no different than that trash talking on the football field. If you're not an athlete, get off the field or petition for these game developers to setup a heirarchy for amateurs like yourself.

Full Sail? A gaming school? I find that extremely hard to believe. Everything about Full Sail can be summed up like this: The school has everything to make you want to go, but nothing to make you want to stay.

They're very slick, stylish looking. They came to my high school with a fancy tour bus where we could play rad video games. They had a guy come to our tv production class to tell us how great Full Sail was which I swear up until that point I had never met any of those cheesy tv infomercial guys before. ...but from everyone I've heard that attended there or had friends that did say job placement rate sucks, only dedicated (as in you teach yourself with their equipment and make your own homework) students learn anything. Before I leave on a really down note, though, Full Sail is good for a certain type of person. The people who already know what they're doing, people looking to find others to start a company, or people looking to play with expensive equipment.

Only good arcade in Florida is Disney Quest. I usually find anything Disney to be boring as hell but you can't go wrong with a 5 floor arcade building. I'd be willing to bet if there were more of those around the country people would show more interest in arcades. Paying an entry fee somehow makes me feel more at ease than popping a quarter in every time.

I'm all for humor, sarcasm, constructive criticism and the like. I just hardly think "Nintendo is poo poo! I might be crazy, but considering this announcement comes at what seems to be very early development for the game, I think it would be wise of the developers to spend the first parts of development just asking the Tolkien fan community what game they would want. It seemed to be the problem with previous attempts. For most MMOGs you create a game then community, but for this and Star Wars you can't do that. You have to make sure the community that already exists is happy with what you're offering.

Even if it wouldn't hold up in court or even if the parody was less obvious, what was the harm to that name brand? I thought the idea behind advertising was the more you get a name out there the more it will sell (which very well could be the point of all the controversy). It can't be a thing of associating the brand with something bad, because there's plenty of movies with product placement that are violent, perverse or vulgar.

Thanks to Penny Arcade, alot more people have that name brand stuck in their head, and until American Greetings decided to put on the legal nutcrackers it probably would have helped sales even if it were just a postcard with Strawberry Shortcake on it that said "Hey, you remember that comic by Penny Arcade? hahaha"
