Then again if you are capable of being happy without much in the way of physical posessions, then the money is a bonus. Too often these days we feel that material wealth is more important the spiritual wealth. When I say spiritual I am thinking along the lines of everything that isn't physical, so this is comfort in who you are and for some people religious beliefs. The poor man who is happy with who is, is much better off than the rich man that can't find happiness at any cost.

Reading the quote in the previous post shows that Bush really does not know what he is going on about. Since emission is about output, dumping C02 into the oceans is not reducing emissions, it simply placing it elsewhere. Reducing emissions is about making the industrial process cleaner, so that less polluting waste products are produced.

So until we know if Global Warming is happening I say we relax
This statement is a bit like saying 'until we can be sure that everybody relieving themselves in the pool has an effect on the pool water we can go on doing it', even though that we have a pretty good idea what will happen - especially if the chlorine runs out.
Unfortunately dealing with the results of the problem, rather than the cause, tends to be the American political way these days. A couple of examples: spending more money on jailing its citizens, than on the education system, which would help reduce crime. And imposing price increases on Canadian wood, simply because the US wood industry has problems - I thought NAFTA was abou free-trade?
This isn't meant to be a troll, but a description of the current situation. Until a change of approach is taken, the US is going to be taking short term decsions and letting future generations to clean-up the resulting mess.
Looks like California High Speed Rail have decided to use the same blue-prints for the trains as used by the Eurostar. At least thats from looking at the photos.
There is something known as battery life. A brighter screen would have meant a shorter battery life. I for one would rather play for an 1 hour plus ( not sure how long it is really ) with average brightness, than 10min at full brightness, especially if the room is lit. Of course nintendo could have added a brightness control and that would probably have pleased a whole bunch of people.
24 months * $10 = $240, which should pay for a pretty nice cable mode
If you read the article it ends up being $240 / $3 = 80 months. This is because rental is now apparently $3 per month and you only get the $10 per month if you post in the $7 coupons. And this will only apply to existing modem owners.
I would figure that ATT was making a good income from modem rentals and since people were starting to buy the modems, they were losing that income and they needed to make up for it somehow.
Or how about having NYT set up slashdot.nytimes.com, which/.ers could use instead of www.nytimes.com? This way, we wouldn't have to register and they would still know that/.ers were reading the site, so they could still target their ads. Both sides win.
At least this way they can be sure their server was slashdotted.
Me, I think 24 Hours at LeMans is the best race out there, simply because it's so outrageously punishing on the machines
You probably haven't seen the Dakar ralley in that case. This race is really an all round skills event for the drivers, co-pilots and mechanics. The trucks with the spare parts even participate in the race.
I prefer the Internet be controlled by a couple greedy corporations that by a single greedy government with armed forces to back it up.
I am not so sure about that. At least in a democratic society you can vote what your government does with such resources. When things get handed to a corporation you can only vote if your wallet is big enough. If you don't think corporations don't have armed forces, then you have never met an angry hord of lawyers;)
Just for added measure the entertainment companies are going to attach cuffs to TV sets. You can only watch the program if you have cuffed yourself to the TV and then it is up to the broadcaster when you can go pee or have a life - the cuffs will only unlock when they decide.
If you are using Mozilla then it appears that it has a few problems handling the gopher protocol, since those same links work fine in MS-Internet Explorer.
The future is solar if you put these following factors together:
Electronic appliances are getting more energy efficient and still have a lot of potential to get more so
Improved insulation reduces air-conditioning and heating costs
A/C and heating usage can be reduced by the design of 'smart' buildings - for example systems control the heat exchange between the home and the outdoors ( for example in the case of cooling: opening vents at night to let the heat escape and closing them during the day )
You could have your tiles replaced with solar panels and in the future you could even have transparent solar panels used in the windows.
You can reduce heating cost of an isolated building by having trees near by since they reduce the amount of heat removed from the building by slowing down the winds acting on the building.
The are probably other methods, but you should get the general idea.
In France I have seen some old stone houses where the owners open the shutters at night and then close them during the day. Walking in at noon you would have thought that you were in a cool cellar. No electric A/C need there.
Another example is in Egypt ( I think it was there ), some of the houses have a small tower on the roof, with slates all around it. The effect is the wind passing through it draws out the warmer air in the house. No electric A/C need there either.
This goes to show that sometimes tomorrows technology is actually a case rediscovering what some cultures have been using for centuries.
BTW One thing that has always got me is why the oil industry doesn't encourage more fuel efficient cars. By doing so they can reduce the rate at which oil is drilled and then increase the price per liter. If people buy more economic cars then they have nothing to complain about (the people) and the oil industry saves money, since they don't have to pump so fast. At least thats the theory anyhow.
The joke about the solar powered torch was also funny until some bright spark decided that putting a battery between the solar cell and the bulb would make a practical device. So there you have it one battery and you get to charge during the day and use at night.
This is one of the reasons that the EU intriduced a bill making companies responsible for the recycling of the computer they sold. This means that companies can't simply say its someone else's problem. This bill has the effect of encouraging companies to find ways to make computers more recyclable, otherwise impossible to recycle computers will effect their bottom line.
The sad truth is that before Joe and Joan Public will stand up for their fair use rights they have to loose them. Until their consumer lives are inconvienced, to a point of frustration, they won't case. In the meantime it is only the informed minority who screams.
The politicians general response to the question "what should we be doing in 100 years?" would be somewhere along the lines "hey that's not our problem, I will have been governor twice and then its someone else's problem". Its sad but it really appears to be the way things are.
There is always MP3.com
Another minor advantage is that they won't need to put up with unreround video-tapes.

Maybe ICANN should simply be called UNCANN and be controlled by the UN?

super-model: I only wear one string at a time.
technician: huh? oh, never mind.
So it looks like Mir wasn't so bad after all. How long before the solar panels get knocked ou ;-)
