I guess you forgot that the clone makers agreed not to go after Apple's market and invariably did. Apple's intention to allow clones was to expand where it couldn't, yet instead of expanding they went after what little of the market Apple had. After having being burnt last time, I am not sure that Apple wants to go through that again.

Since money is already set aside, with the way the lottery system was set out, heritage should be one of the places receiving money. Nothing is stopping from other people pitching in separate to the lottery money allocation, but it doesn't mean that they should be refusing the lottery money either.

One thing that is different between a regular state tax and the lottery is that people choose to buy a lottery ticket, while most people don't have a choice about the taxes they pay.

Hey IANNA, why not free up some of the "LEGACY" Class-A allocations (see below) That would free some 650 MILLION addresses!!! Some 15% of the address space.

While a good idea, it is probably easier to simply migrate to IPv6. I say this reckoning that the amount of bureaucratic paper work amounts for most of the effort. If you are going to be doing the paper work, then it might as well be done for a solution moving forward, than trying to temporarily fix a bad allocation. At least this way the paper work is done once. Also, if there is hardware to be upgraded then you might as well put the effort into putting IPv6 ready hardware in place.

The pieces for IPv6 are slowly falling into place and there is less excuse to ignore it. The major operating systems support it and even Windows 2000 could use IPv6 if you had the technology preview (not sure where you can get hold it today) and a number of routers support it.

An incomplete list of Internet Service Providers providing native IPv6 is available, though it could probably be updated and as more ISPs start providing native support to their customers. DSL Reports, also has a forum dedicated to IPv6.

Myself, I have started experimenting with IPv6 simply so I can understand all the issues and be able to help out other adopters. I started using Teredo on my Mac (since it supports being behind a NAT), by means of Miredo (a nice front-end for the Mac is available here), and then moved onto Aiccu. The advantage with going using Aiccu, is that I can have an IPv6 subnet for my computers at home. Also, since I wanted to make my web server available on the IPv6 addressable net, I registered its IP address with FreeDNS, since they allow for registration of AAAA records on their servers. There are certainly other 6to4 tunnels providers, such as Freenet6, but I haven't really investigate them since I already have a solution that fits my needs.

The only real solution, but not perfect either, is to send a physical confirmation letter (snail mail) to the address in question. The letter would contain a confirmation code that needs to be used to activate the account. Until that happens the account and domain would be reserved for one month before it is returned to the void.

What would be interesting is whether it would be possible to add some intelligence into the DNS server, which checks the whois database to find out who the registrar is. You could then use that as a method for flagging possible domains at risk, or not resolving them. Another approach would be to include this a plug-in for Firefox or other web browsers. The catch is providing the service without killing the whois servers.

Just seeing the number of times that I have seen cyclists go through red lights at full speed, without slowing down and then blaming the car driver for almost hitting them is incredible. I cycle too, but I also drive from time to time, so I see things from both angles. If people can't follow the highway code, and are endangering themselves and others, then they deserve to get a fine, whether it be cyclist, motorised vehicle driver or pedestrian. There are certain cases where you can adapt the highway code to the situation, but that takes good judgement and respect for other road users - unfortunately many people simply adapt the highway code to their needs and everyone else can be damned.
