I've a older (winXP) notebook that I use sparsely, if it's been off-line much more than a week, it needs about 15-20 minutes on first boot for updates, before I can use it.
You can play H.264 with newer XBMCs on the original xbox. It's still our main media center.
You only need to make sure the data rate doesn't saturate the CPU, by adding something like ":vbv-maxrate=2000:vbv-bufsize=750" to the advanced encoding settings in Handbrake. I also lower the resolution a bit in my default preset, but I'm not sure that's really needed..
I second this - I've a dual monitor setup and one of them in portrait. It's a real joy to browse in 1920x1200. Wide enough for most sites, and actually high enough that I seldom have to scroll.
I agree - I still have a few stars to collect in Super Mario Galaxy. I just don't have the time to reach the perfection it take complete those levels. They are hard!
I stopped on a random page and read six page of nonsense on how to make a security taskforce of some kind - it was mostly concerned with titles of the members...
7. Applications that replace, remove or modify the default dialer, SMS, or MMS interface.
8. Applications that change the default browser, search client, or media player on the device.
In other words: anything that makes our crappy OS suck less...
It's kind of strange that they think this is okay, but they haven't added "email client" to one the above lists. Maybe they just forgot it or they know, that mobile outlook is so crappy that it would be useless...
The first and original version of the Asus Eee 701 netbook came in a web-cam free version. I know because I installed a webcam in mine...
Can be found very cheaply used...
Never has the Six-Lesson Schoolteacher essay seems more relevant...

This is about enforcing and strengthening the part where people learn that they have no rights and no privacy.
... nice to see somebody who don't just ship the product and then hope to fix issues with later software updates.
I was going to mention the IPhone here, but I actually couldn't think of a phone that didn't have issues on initial release. So I won't.... Oh, I guess I already did...
I'll probably stay away from this to...
But as a former Palm Pro, V, T3 owner, I actually look back at the palm sync system with found memories, now that I have to live with abomination that is ActiveSync/MobileSync.
Okay, I've never gotten a duplicate, but my device is routinely forgotten by activesync and I have to create it again. Sometimes I have the same effect you had, only with files sync. When the device is seen as new, it has to get a new name, and an empty directory is created for file sync - on first sync, the computer directory is empty and I have a lot of files on the Mobile. It seems random what Active sync decides should be the correct state on first sync....
From the lab that did the experiment:
http://www.physics.mcgill.ca/~hedbergj/labpage/projects.htm
Quote: "...atomic force microscope (AFM) that will operate in a ~50 mK environment with a 16 Tesla magnet. "
So this case "100 times colder than space" is ~50mK
I inserted a 6 plug power strip with on/off switch in to a large box, with a hole at one end with the on/off switch sticking out. All the bricks and chargers are in the box and plugged in.
A few of the charge wires come out on the side of the box, for easy attachment of a device. For some of the devices, mostly my pocket camera that has a charging station, I have to lift the lid of the box.
Just search for "charger box" and you'll find example of people doing this:
http://www.google.com/search?q=charger+box
I've read all Banks except Matter, which I hope to get around to after I finish Toast by Stross. Never got started on Reynolds, but one of his books are on my to-read-stack.
Mindstar Rising is one of Hamiltons first books and is rather weak compared to his later books.
Firstly, let me warn you about the Illum books. The first one is okay, but the last one is really bad. Simmons gets lost in the quantum magic of the story and never really finds his way back again...
I can't tell you about SFBC as they don't do the rest of the world outside of the US...
Amazons recommendation system seems to work okay.
Looking at who wins the Hugo or Nebula, can work, but should be taken without a grain of salt.
Forums and news groups like rec.arts.sf.written can be a really good source of inspiration, but can consume so much time that you will not have time to read books.
But if you are ready for something different I'll recommend you the "new" wave of authors from Britain. People like Charles Stross (he has a few free e-books out), Peter F. Hamilton (Nights Dawns trilogy is not a good place to start), Ken MacLeod.
I can't seem to find any contact information on you, so:
The http://dr.dk/oline site is part for danish national television and has some really nice flash games, suitable for small kids, I'm been playing them with my oldest since he was a couple of years old.
The same with the BBC site http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/ - there's something for all ages here. Including simple stuff like Teletubbies for the youngest. I've spend to many hours there to mention, with him sitting my lap.
Mostly lots of fun, even if some of it can get quite boring. Just look at your kids face and if they are having fun you can probably take 10 more minutes of it...
The best part of these sites, are that they are closed systems. No Ads, no links to external sites. You do not risk that they end up at something "bad" if you leave them alone with the computer for a while...

Anyway, what I want is a Full HD screen in a 15" notebook - there are a few of them, but the choices a few.
I agree - I still have a few stars to collect in Super Mario Galaxy. I just don't have the time to reach the perfection it take complete those levels. They are hard!
He already authorized the Robot City series while he was alive: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Asimov's_Robot_City
(it has been a while, but I think I enjoyed the first couple of them)
He didn't mind other people writing on his ideas...

I still live with WinMo, but only because of the newest Opera Beta.... nice browser! http://www.opera.com/mobile/
Please, do not call it Orion unless it has small nukes coming out it's ass. Confuses this old timer, it does, yes?

No, /. editors not checking the actually story is not a sign of the Apocalypse.
It's more on the scale of "a sign that /. is not a real news source".
Close, but those are the specs for the Neo1973, the free runner specs are here:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Neo_FreeRunner
(added wifi and faster cpu)
Further details here:

I agree - the submission is bad... there's no mentioning of the phone being for sale on http://openmoko.com/ - just a "coming soon" note.
In a strange coincident, worthy of Douglas Adams, "Stole" actually translates to "chairs" in Danish...
I would say Fallen Dragon. It's the first one he did after Nights Dawn, and it's also his only standalone novel.

Read up on them on wikipedia.
... it will work great in Beta Centauri...
