  4. Is there a difference? on The Poor Waste More Time On Digital Entertainment · · Score: 1

I got my first computer at the age of 8 when my disabled mother received her back pay. It had an AMD k6-2, 64mb ram, and a 6gb hard drive, which honestly wasn't too shabby for 1998. My first PC game was Independence War, a space sim which you could mod if you had some knowledge of coding. So I kind of picked it up, and playing video games led me to go to school now for Computer Science to learn how to make the damn things.

    It's not all bad.

  14. How Beer Saved the World on What Beer Can Teach Us About Emerging Technologies · · Score: 2

There is a great documentary available on Netflix called How Beer Saved the World. It's a pretty good watch, basically attributing most of the agricultural revolution to accidental beer discovery.

Perhaps we'll get to line NASA's budget if we discover a boozin' alien race. It worked for the Romulans...

  15. Perspective on Lawyers For Mining Companies Threaten Scientific Journals · · Score: 3, Interesting

I am a computer science major from West Virginia. One summer I bit the bullet and took a summer job at McDonald's, and one of the guys working there quit his job in a coal mine because it was so bad he'd rather work fast food.

Every time I hear about a mining disaster, it strikes a little close to home... most of them are in my state. Virtually all the money made from it goes out of state. All of them could have been prevented, had money not been placed above improving safety or mining technology.

    Greed is king.

I've really been thinking about purchasing the Samsung Galaxy Player 5. I don't have a need for a smartphone as I find wifi + Google Voice to be more than adequate to meet my needs since I shut down my Verizon account and kept my Droid. It's like having a portable landline; I can go to the park without being tied into an endless stream of information.
