I completly agree, just because a reverse lookup doesn't work doesn't mean that possibly valid mail shouldn't be let through. I've frequently looked at spam and very often the @name.com doesn't even exist!!! I mean the URL is not valid. BUT why has nobody tried enforcing forward lookups? My IP officially is dynamic and the reverse lookup is basically MYIP.MYISP.com BUT my forward lookup WILL resolve to my current IP. I would prefer that mail servers if spam is such a problem, check the forward lookup, it would stop a ton of spam and not screw people like me with the disadvantage of an offically dynamic IP.
You can see an example here I just started a small website that is all static, and it does something like what you say. you enter your body message in a text file and run the script(see link for script) and it regenerates that page. Also you can change another file the change the menu and run the script to regenerate all the pages. So here is a perfect example of what you are saying to do, minus the fact that it doesn't do the uploading. But I do belive I'll take a look at that book my meathod for parts and the books meathod for parts of a site would expand options.
First of all access to admin from a public IP is bad...just bad. In that case I would be setup to ssh into my linuxbox and then telnet to the router. My setup is actually a bit different, my router requires a web interface from the private side so I use ssh and vnc throught my linux box, using Wake-on-lan to startup my windows box and VNC through the linux box to access the router setup through IE on my windows box. If you follow that or just the first meathod if telnet works on your router the only key is a good password on ssh on the inside box....which if you know your setting up to access from the outside you should have a good password. And those not smart enough to do that won't need to and hence no port forwarding for ssh to work at all.
The big full function cable boxes here(Time Warner in WI) are able to be programmed over the wire...which is what happens to rented boxes. If you wanted to buy the box you get an auth. card from TWC. Cable company doesn't care if you buy or rent the box, there profit is about the same either way. But the problem is nobody wants to buy the boxes at 500 a pop, many people have more than one and that gets expensive quick. And how long before the tech changes and you need a new box anyway. (OH and if you want an HD box that costs a lot more to buy, but the rental price is the SAME!!!)

It works like a VCR...I'm tired of people making a big deal about it I'm going to write up a paper on it and submit it for a main story, for something so geeky, and appealing to lots of people on the user end, I'm supprised not more people here know that.
Wow your school must have had money to burn...there are software versions that do exactly what you describe in a piece of hardware. The software version works as long as the "sheriff" software is not damaged. We fixed that by installing the app really deep in the windoews directories, in a folder in a folder, and so on. But the software rocked, screw up the C: drive all ya want and all ya have to do is reboot and presto all back to normal.
Quad-shield??? why bother..your wasting money for nothing. You can run all the services you want over regular RG6 with a 60% braid. I hate quad-shield.
This is basically what most cable companies do now, its called Hybrid Fiber Coax. Long runs with fiber and neighborhood runs with coax. They are just also offering phone service, which with IP phones is really not a big deal. That and they are doing an inital rollout, unlike cable companies just adding cable modems to there services.
The next upgrade for cable is to start broadcasting video-on-demand over the existing system. Essentially it'll work like your cable modem; you'll be sharing a local loop with a bunch of people, but you'll get one or two customized on-demand channels. Ummm, Time Warner is already doing this in Wisconsin. Channnel 1000 is MOD(movies on demand) and above that is HBO, Cinemax and TMC on demand. And I know that this is not the first area to have the service avalible...But don't worry their not about to run out of bandwidth, I don't have the specs next to me but they still have at least 1/4 of the avalible bandwidth unused.
Also you won't get one or two customized channels, What the hell would 1 or 2 be for??? You can only watch one thing at once. What happens is when you order any ondemand service you get allocated a "channel"(not really a channel cuz the number doesn't change but its the bandwidth of one channel) And when you stop watching the VOD for a few minutes the "channel" is released for someone else to use. Also like I said before they have allocated more than enough bandwidth for VOD and still have much unallocated.

In south eastern WI Time Warner Cable has road runner, you can also get AOL through their lines(same parent company different service, very different) earthlink(i think) and soon you will be able to get Inter Dot Net. And that doesn't include andy of the DSL providers in the area, which I belive there are several, 3+. So you talking around a 1/2 dozen providers. Yes the wires are owned by one of the two companies, the Bell or TWC, but the choices are there. Only problem I have is the price could go down a bit $45 month now is average. But even $45 is not that much, dialup+phone line is 22+15=$37. It is only $8 more a month for broadband than dialup. I feel it is worth it.
First of all the amount of bandwidth allocated to a channel is the same for all channels. I don't remember exactly how much each gets but is more than enough, and all are the same. Also why did you call them and ask about BBC America when your cable TV is f#$@ed up??? You are odd.
To fix you TV problems do this. Make sure you know what your problem is. It is called "Blocking and Tileing" And in the digital cable realm all problems show up as Blocking and Tileing, no matter what the actuall problem is with the signal. This is different than analog cable where different problems look different on the screen. Call TW and tell them you have Blocking and Tileing. And/or check all your cables, do you have chitty radio shack cables with crimp on connectors, throw those out. All cables should be 60% braid or better, and connecters should be pre-made or pressure fit connectors(NOT CRIMP ON) Next all your splitters should be 5-1000Mhz(many don't go up to 1ghz) Next tighten all your connections, very tight by hand, and all those not on TV/VCR/CABLE BOX/etc should be tightend with a 7/16 wrench turn 1/4 turn past tight by hand. If you are unable to fix it yourself call TW they will be able to fix it, if the blocking and tileing won't go away talk to a supervisor, its NOT acceptable.
Especially how good the extended warrantys are, Circuit City give you like $2 for selling the monitor but on the CSP you get like $25. You can't just sell the computer, you have to sell the extended stuff...if you want to keep your job. Of course strictnein knows that. And as far as quitting your job goes...do it, I'd find a new job first, but do it. Even if you have to take a small pay cut it is worth it, unless you think you can become a store manager(who doesn't make all that much for the amount of work most of them do) quit ASAP. If you have to take a pay cut its ok cuz you have a 9/10 chance the abiltiy to increase your pay will be much higher, CC there is little to no chance of really increasing your pay.
I really never bothered learning much about ogg vs. mp3...I got a few mp3 around of songs I have to have, singles basically. I'm not like some with 1000+mps......BUT the page you linked to with the comparison between ogg and mp3 WOW!!! Am I impressed, I have both ogg.wav's and the MP3.wav looping in winamp.....(the.wav's are decompressed from each file format) If these examples are real....I'm going to start burning and moving everything over to ogg.

ONE, If you know how to put the box in diagnostic mode you can check the IP of your DIGITAL cable box. It is usually in the 10.x.x.x range. I guess they could just put twice the hardware in dual IPs. That private IP is needed for the communication of digital boxes with the local hub(not ethernet hub its the cable office hub) They have to have the private IP private because of communications needs also if it was public people could hack your cable box.(i doubt it would be hack proof) The second IP would be for the public for the net...you know what thats for.
TWO, people are talking about the cable co wanting people to have a $200 bill. well I'm not sure about that...of course they wouldn't complain about that profit. BUT if you knew all the sevices that they are going to start offering it is impressive all the stuff you could get from one provider. (telephone video on demand, free demand stuff which is really neat if you know what it is) Your charge per item is often fair, just cumulative up to $200, not to bad considering all the stuff you get. Ask me if you want to know more about the potentially cool stuff coming out.

How does one start probing a piece of hardware to figure out how to interact with it. How do I write the driver once I have that info? Give me an example of how someone took a new piece of hardware probed it and figured out how the driver should be written, a step-by-step example and the thought proccess involved. Not just the I probled these memory addresses and wrote this line of code to do this and this line does this...I mean the whole friggin thought proccess that one could read and use to learn to do it on other hardware.
And for that matter keep going once you start documenting, explain how to write everything for linux so people like me who only got tought MS programing in school can help The Cause(TM). [OK so I also learned shell scriptin, but thats not really programming] And while your at it GPL the documenting and post it as HTML, and link to it when you rant like above. At least with Windows if I can't find a piece of software I HAVE to have, I can write it up....and I suspect I'm not the only one in this position. Hey being real for a second, MS shitty as they are, VB is easy to use. So is their C++ in studio 6.0
