    if you read the story about google bombing last week you will realise that your criticism is more effective if you use links rather than plaintext.
    Slashdot, Hows about an easier form. There has got to be a easier/better way to do it than typing in raw tags. the form even ignores me if i put in nicely formed line breaks like <br /> or use both opening and closing paragraph tags

    His closing comment was out of line but so was your mail. Your mail was condescending and unnecessarily verbose. You have to try and put yourself in his shoes and have some empathy.

    you could have made your point in about 2 paragraphs without implying that he was incompetent (he should get competent help), without bitching to him about how much you dislike spam, and definately with complaining that he was wasting taxpayers money and blaming him like it was his fault.

    *I* _know_ thats not what you meant but he obviously did not and it is very easy to read it that way if you are an overworked underfunded school. There must have been a time when you have fired off an angry email without thinking very long about it.

    I suggest you send him a follow up mail apologising for your abruptness, explaining your intent and tell him how to close the open relay to prevent people hijacking thier network to send spam. A gracious offer of help will be far more productive.

    Netcraft only tells you what the webserver runs, its not infallible (some webservers lie), and its not necessarily what the mailserver is running and you dont even know if he runs the webserver.

    Maybe the headers in his reply email prove he was using windows 2000 but how could you have known the first time you mailed him?
    You assume too much, which is not wise on your first encounter with a stranger. You probably feel like you are doing him a favor, but that mail would make him feel like he is just getting grief.

    I dont think he is a bad guy, but you should both shake hands (at least metaphorically) and do what needs to be done. Think about the children!

    A noble sentiment, but if you want to really help then Join the Mandrake club.

    This sounds like a useful idea and give use better directory systems, but its utility would be limited. Im sure there will be people poking holes in this algorithm in no time. Slashdot has a odd mix of subjects loosely tied together. News for Nerds is not a very strict group. Classification and grouping is a hard problem. There is no clear black and white, there are many shades of gray.

    I strongly agree with above post, you really should emulate how Google does it. In particular im talking about text based Advertising.

    If users find the advertsing particularly annoying or irrelavant, they can easily block all images from the site and your screwed. Dont forget some people still use text only browsers.

    I really like using Slashdot light, but i still have to download a the advertising, and if its going to get worse then i might finally use adbuster or use mozilla's image blocking features, but i dont want to see Slashdot bankrupt either.

    Its a syndicated story, the 'PA' at the bottom is for the Press Association a Uk news service.
    I supect the 'breaking news' section is an entirely automated newsfeed, which would explain why the Irish Times had it posted at 6 in the morning (GMT, their local time).

    Those are not necessarily good reasons to SEND word documents. Better to send a Link rather than an attachment, especially when you are mailing it to many people.

    Besides if you were really serious about formatting would you not be using PDF?
    Mail clients do spellchecking, there is not reason why they should not do grammar checking, just at the moment they dont.

    originally Han could clearly be seen shooting first, but in the Special Edition Greedo shot first (but way off target, like a threat) and Han shot him as if i defense

    you left out .shs which is a scrap file. There are one or two file extensions such as .lnk and and .shs which are always hidden by the registry and can be used to disguise virii.
    There was an old eudora exploit that used a harmless looking .lnk to link to a second more dangerous attachment (this worked because they could always predict exactly where your attachments folder was)

    You are oversimplyfing.
    When most people talk about open source projects the preclude the idea of Commercial but Open source projects, they may not be the majority but they do exist.

    If a project is both commercial and open (rather than commercial and propriatary) it is inevitable that the will have set deadlines and one can _honestly_ say that these deadlines exist.

    Of course they may be an increased likehood that developers get distracted by tangetial features or helping out less skilled volunteer programmers (Brooks Law, adding more programmers to a late project only makes it later).
    do you think the Open Office/Star Office Developers being paid for by Sun Microsystems or the Mozilla/Netscape developers being paid for by AOL/Netscape/TimeWarner/whoever are not forced to meet deadlines?

    Mmm, Fud, makes me think of that simpsons episode where Homer cant get Duff Beer and has to settle for Fud (or was that FFUD?).

    you need to set your terminal type to ANSI and then it will work fine.
    i cant rememeber the command but a windows junkie put me in my place last week when i said how much windows telnet sucked rocks and he was using pine in no time.

    If you can you should use SSH instead, i strongly recommmend Putty (search google and its the first page).

    MS telnet still sucks rocks

    If you think thats good just wait till Star/Open Office && Abiword && KWord get their next generation of Standardised XML for Word Processing agreed and sorted out.

    Im hoping i can finally make the switch and kiss all my old Rich Text Format .rtf Files goodbye.

    If they can standardise on a subset of XML then not only will we have the benfit of using existing XML tools, but new tools will work across a multiple applications.

    Choice is good, diversity is good, real standards are good. Its all good.

    Im not a lawer but from what little i knowcontract law just doesn't work like that.

    If you tried to use a contract or license to try and make GPL code secret then the contract is would be bogus.

    However if the code is not GPL and you got caught then you have to deal with the DMCA, and try and argue your right to reverse engineer.
    And then there is the UCITA nonsense trying to legitimise shrink wrap licenses ...

    What makes you think that?
    Why wouldnt they have to give the code to the general public?
    They did after all steal the code from the general public.

    Having already profiteered and exploited GPL code i think financial reparations would be in order (but of course who gets what and how much? i class action suit perhaps?).
    If the company was declared bankrupt before they were bought out then it would be very harsh to expect reparations fromt the current owner so long as they promptly releases the code as they are obliged to do.

    Anyone who downloaded the ~3MB of Abiword from Abisource.com.
    I dont think it would be unreasonable to offer it in abw format, Its not like Adobe Acrobat Reader comes as standard with windows.

    its beyond me hy they dont just offer it online in HTML and then offer the other formats for anyone who wants to print it (or even Zipped Html for those who want to read it offline).
