I know that every time there's an internet outage at our university it's usually a backhoe. Backhoes are the natural enemy of the Internet. Anyway, this is disturbing and fascinating at the same time. The reason why the Internet was design the way it was so that it could survive an nuclear war even if the networks became fragmented. In a way this is an interesting test of the design, but it does have disturbing overtones given that it's happening in the Middle East. That being said I think there are three possibilities as to who or what is responsible: Mossad, CIA, or underwater backhoes. Which do you think is the most plausible and least paranoid?

Don't you know that Ruby is manna from Heaven and everyone and I mean everyone should be using it. They could do an occasional foray in to C# if need be. If you must use Visual Basic never ever admit to it. Don't even get me started on FORTRAN users.

Snarkery aside (is that a word?). Use the language that you are most productive in. Use the right tool for the job. If you are simulating nuclear explosions or climate modeling then FORTRAN may be your tool. Some programmers are stuck in the .NET world and must use VB or C#. I never got my head around Java but since I'm a web developer and part-time sysadmin I'm very comfortable with Perl, PHP, and Python (my preferred language). In my CS classes I had to learn Pascal, Assembly, FORTRAN, C then C++. And I even had to roll my own mini-language using Lex and Yacc. On the job I learned Visual Basic, Objective-C, Java, Perl, PHP, Python, and Powerbuilder.

I think a programmer should be exposed to multiple programming paradigms. You don't know what you may actually end up programming in. The big sell about Java is that it is an 'Enterprise Level Language' and is a big sell to companies. Same goes for .NET. 'Everyone' uses Microsoft so they want MS based programming systems. You just have to find your niche. My preferred language is Python because it can run in Jython so it has an in into the Java world. It can be IronPython so it has an in into the MS world. It is object oriented and much easier for me to debug than Perl. It's also easy to learn and there is a lot of crap I just don't have to worry about.`

I predict it will hit 5/gal by the end of 2008.

I've been wrong almost every time in guessing how much gasoline will rise. I think the prices will depend on the political situation going into November. Did you notice how gas prices stabilized and remained relatively low during the 2006 election? I know people say the prices weren't manipulated, but it sure seemed to me the oil companies did what they could to help the Republicans win in 06. It didn't help. So unless there is some kind of major disruption I suspect we may see a repeat of the Fall 2006 pricing.

I've no doubt it'll hit $5 USD/gal at some point in the future, but I don't think it'll be 2008. Supply and availability are going to be the real determining factors. Until there are shortages and long lines people will grumble but they won't be up in arms.

I predict gasoline will eventually be sold per liter as prices go up and that car mileage will be listed in kilometers per gallon. It won't change anything but it'll be an attempt to obfuscate the real costs.

What has changed is a decrease in our earning power.

Proof that gasoline is still too cheap: I still see tons of Hummers, Expeditions, Navigators, Armadas, Sequoias and other mondo SUVs (aka Urban Assault Vehicles) on the road.
