I sure as hell don't. He's like the Chris Matthews of the computer world. Just another loud mouth.
OLPC is a revolution. It isn't naive. It'll take off, but will have many more trials and tribulations ahead of it.
The only reason this story made the grade was to get lots of comments on what a useless columnist Dvorak is. Congrats, Slashdot editors.
Those other third world states need some of them XO's too.
Probably what will happen is that they'll get hollowed out and the third-graders will use them to haul their crystal meth in. And drug dealers if stopped can pose as distributors and say those laptops are for the children. Won't someone think of the children?
Well, I have been reluctant to want to visit the US given the rampant paranoia and siege state that seems to be prevalent down there recently, but this pretty much guarantees I won't ever visit again.
I saw an XO up close and personal at Pycon 2007. Ivan Krstic gave some very interesting talks about the device. It is very well engineered and they put a lot of thought into it. I can see why Intel and Microsoft are up in arms over it. The XO is the opposite of bloat. It is intended to operate in a very decentralized environment and with minimal support.
One of my complaints was that we could not buy them here, but now thanks to the Give One Get One program that is no longer a problem. They originally only intended to sell them to governments in large lots. I didn't think that was the best business model. There are other models for NGO's they could follow. Modeling it after the BOGO light was a smart move.
FYI, they guy who is making this claim is Lawrence Krauss, author of the book "The Physics of Star Trek".
How ironic? Yeah I know he didn't write that godawful episode Force of Nature (thanks for the other commenters naming it for me). Are we having a six degrees of Kevin Bacon moment in fantasy physics?
Probably one of the worst Star Trek The Next Generation episodes was the one where it turns out that warp drive was ruining the fabric of spacetime so everyone had to drive warp 5.5. Sadly I can't remember enough details to find the damn episode's name. They eventually ignored it the same way the ignored the first episode with the Klingons in the original Trek.
Even if this idea is unsubstantiated I can imagine the anti-science crowd taking this and saying we shouldn't do any science at all.
Why would you tell your soon to be former employer that you are going to go work for one of their competitors? Just say you are going to go work for a startup that you hope gets bought out by Microsoft.
I've seen employees escorted out and had to escort one out at a previous job. It's a humiliating experience even under the most benign of circumstances.
I'll bet the DoD spends more on dos like this than NASA does, but where's the outrage? FEMA spent millions on toxic trailers though I'm sure they didn't spend anywhere near as much on fake news conferences.
Since I don't see the military-industrial complex going away anytime soon why don't we re-purpose it? Shift it towards a space-industrial complex. We could be spending just as much on space and making those same companies rich while benefiting Americans and the world at the same time. Alas hope doesn't sell. Fear does.
Narrator: In A.D. 2007, investigation was beginning.
Conyers: What happen ?
Whistleblower: Somebody not set up us the Bcc.
Staffer: We get chat window.
Conyers: What!
Staffer: Main chat turn on.
Conyers: It's you!!
Cheney: How are you gentlemen!!
Cheney: All your email are belong to us.
Cheney: You are on the way to destruction.
Conyers: What you say!!
Cheney: You have no chance to impeach make your time.
Cheney: Ha Ha Ha Ha....
Staffer: Conyers:!! *
Conyers: Take off every 'DOJ'!!
Conyers: You know what you doing.
Conyers: Move 'HJC'.
Conyers: For great justice.
Notice how they throw in an impassioned plea to roll over and take it?
Sadly, that's how most lawsuits of this type are handled. Settle now or pay more later is standard practice.
After reading the details of this case, I have conclude she had a bad lawyer, RIAA had a fairly strong case, and she did some questionable things that didn't help her case.
She'll never be able to pay that judgment in full. Yeah, the RIAA will take what they can and garnishee her wages. She has no incentive to get a better paying job they'll just take the extra money. Even before they changed the bankruptcy laws, she'd still be screwed.
The RIAA wants this case to be used as a deterrent. We'll see how much illegal downloading this stops.
'iad siud' means 'those yonder' is pronounced "ee-at shit"
'thuit siud' means 'that fell' is pronounced "who-it shit"
It is an endangered language. Though it didn't provide as many loan words as Spanish or French, it does provide some rather well known ones including a few English slang terms:
whisky (uisge beatha) water of life
galore (gu leor) plenty or enough
smashing ('S math sin) that's great
snogging (snog) nice slang for kissing
cheerio (tioraidh) bye
claymore (claidheamh mor) great sword
The other obvious advantage learning a minority language is that you can say things like pog mo thon (kiss my ass).
and on the verge of becoming hysterical. It was no wonder the cops reacted the way they did. Maybe the cops used excessive force but needed to get him under control. When the guy asked the skull and crossbones question he'd gone off the deep end into tinfoil hat land.
We still have AM radio long long long after FM radio was introduced. I see absolutely no reason to get rid of all analog TV. It is a stable mature technology. They may want to get rid more of UHF bands. Besides analog TVs are cheap.
Another option is to buy a second drive for your laptop, take out the original and store it in a safe location, then install linux on the new one. That way when it does need to go in for repair put the original back in. It also keeps them from losing your data.
I can confirm that developing web applications with Django is bliss.
I'd like to believe that. I've got a lot of experience with Zope and Plone and they do have a steep learning curve. I wanted something simpler and Django sounded really exciting. I must be doing something wrong. it's not as easy as I thought it was going to be to be and is taking longer to get up to speed than I expected. It's not living up to it's slogan: "The Web framework for perfectionists with deadlines". I've gone through the tutorials and started on the Django book online.
I hope it's just me because I don't grok Django yet. Any pointers would be appreciated.

This probably explains why Bush keeps doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
Netflix should go ahead and change it's envelope anway. They'd save a lot of paper.
I already watch a few movies online.

Don't worry about visiting. Our government says it's A-OK to kidnap foreign nationals. See you soon!
You haven't seen 2 girls 1 cup yet, have you? And no I will not link to it. You are on your own.

You work for us Mr. Kerr. I find it very un-American to even suggest that. The right to privacy is patriotic.
