  1. Un natural on Why We Can't Have the Male Pill (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 1

Alterations in estrogen levels during pregnany result in haulted ovulation during pregnancy. It is part of the normal biological process for ministration to suspend under some circumstances. The female pill creates one of those circumstances.
There are no normal situations that suspend sperm production. It’s an abnormal situation.
Just to point out the obvious, the article was written by a woman.

  2. Time to waive the BS flag. There are currently 5000 - 7000 human languages. No universal translater exists for humans.
Since pets are frequently not raised by pets, but rather humans, there a virtually zero probability that a "pet" language can or will be passed on generation to generation. Thus, each family unit will develop unique language and behaviors creating a virtually infinite number of potential languages.
So the real question is, how hard are the people laughing who cashed the VC check for this "startup"?

  3. So, this is how unicorns die - VC $$ blown then reincarnated into some other useless product.

  4. Uber/Lyft NOT Rideshare on Slashdot Asks: Your Favorite Ride-Sharing App? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Stop calling this miserable business model a ‘ride share’
Sharing your ride is like taking a co-worker who lives on your route, to work. Or taking someone to the store with you who needs to go shopping
Accepting money to drive someone you don’t know to a destination you wouldn’t normally go is a taxi service, NOT a ride share. period.
Corporate Uber extracts it’s revenue off the lowest common and weakest link in the chain- the driver. Instead of wages and benefits of being an employee for a taxi server, Uber drivers get all the costs, taxes and maintenance on their shoulders. After everything is calculated, drivers would be dollars ahead flipping burgers for $10/hr.

  5. I've renovated houses and built structures as well. Some lumber yards at least call their smaller material "shorts", others don't identify it.. It's an increasing trend and like always, buyer beware.

  6. I rather like Dr. Tyson's answer on this topic: "the effort required to establish a self sustaining colony of humans on another world far exceeds any effort that would be required to fix this one."

  7. Re:In other news on Home Improvement Chains Accused of False Advertising Over Lumber Dimensions (consumerist.com) · · Score: 3, Interesting

    Not the same at all:
A 2x4 used to be a "raw" 2 inches by 4 inches to the center of the saw blade. However you could expect them to be 1/16-1/4 inch short on each dimension due to "curf", which is the width of material removed by the saw blade.
Those were building standards for 100 years. Today, lumber yards sell 2x4 being 3/4 of an inch short on all dimensions. This allows more boards cut from the raw logs but also cheats the customer out of the full width, breadth and length since they charge the same price. Boards don't match if your remodeling and don't have the strength. The bottom line is mills and yards changed dimensions to get more money for less lumber. When you're selling 10's of millions of board feet, a few inches per board adds up to real money
To equate to your hard drive example, this year you buy a 64Gb drive for $20, Next year you buy a drive packaged in a 64Gb container but it only has 50Gb raw storage in the same packaging and price as the previous 64Gb device. so, no, not the same.

  8. Most companies I've been with are mortified at building. "C's" would rather spend 10x $$ and hire consultants to install a core business app from OTS (off the shelf) then build in the competitive advantage of their unique culture. I've actually been told "we don't want to be held hostage by programmers".

Non-compete agreements are not worth toilet paper - if you have a good attorney.. You have the right (in the US) of "Life, Liberty and pursuit of happiness", which legally includes your chosen profession. Therefore, nobody can deny you the opportunity to work in your chosen, educated and expert profession - to do so is quite literally unconstitutional.
There may be a period of time before you can bring some "break through" product to market, but you can't be denied work.
This is NOT to be confused with the Uber case of stealing company work and starting your own company or bringing it to another party. That's a whole different level.

    * fresh water shortages,
    * global warming will change the earth, it's projected that by 2050 5Bn people will face entirely new climates (again, what will that do to plant and animal habitat) , parts of the US will have over 200 days per year of +100 degree temps.

It does not change the fact that Waymo will still be able to hit Uber with a Cease and Desist order for the Uber self driving technology. Uber will be years behind to rewriting the code free of Waymo intellectual property. No matter how it resolves, it pulls Uber out of the game long enough to make it irrelevant considering their labor relations nightmare and lack of profitability.
