  1. I just don't see it on Television On Your Cell Phone · · Score: 5, Insightful

Sure this is going to be aimed more at people wanting to catch up on the latest news and sports, but personally, this is not a service I would pay for. If I'm looking for up to date news/sports/stocks etc. I'd be more likely to want a phone with wireless Internet. I would want the information now, and want to be able to drill down to my own intrests as opposed to waiting until the TV finally gets to the little bit of information I actually want to hear. Lets face it, you're not going to "see" very detailed pictures on your cell phone.

And the exact same tactics. Salesman pounce on you and try to sell extended warranty plans. My wife and I were looking at a cell phone (the cheaper the better). The one we were discussing was $99. They tried to sell us a service plan for three years for $50 That's 1/2 the price of the phone. I told him in a year (manufacturer's warranty) the phone might be worth $20. He went on to explain how cell phones are expensive to fix and it would probably break 1 day after the manuf. warranty expired.

Sometimes I place more value on the service I get that on the product itself (software or not). A lot of software is moving to a hosted environment, and a lot of companies are starting to like the idea. Now you can use your service from your mobile device as well as at the office. So, instead of charging for the software, charge for the hosting. Develop and open source the product, then charge people to use the service in your hosted environment.

I don't see the toilet analyzing urine and your toothbrush analyzing saliva, but they are neat ideas.

The thing is makers of big supercomputers are scared of clustering technology. Look at google. A large cluster, and if one of the machines dies, you don't worry about it. Every once in a while you go and replace those that died. If only a small portion die, you haven't seriously impacted your production. However, if your supercomputer goes down... well, your screwed. 1000 machines are more reliable then 1 big machine.

I know some pages did display different results if you were using a browser other than IE (didn't Opra get a big payout from MS for this?), but just to fool people and throw off stats doesn't seem like a good reason to me. Like most people on Slashdot, I'd like to see Firefox's market share increase to a point where IE didn't (at least try to) define standards for html, css, xhtml, etc.

While this may be true, there is also the fact that since they've been able to do it for years and years with Microsoft based OSs, there's no surprise that when they actually started locking stuff down, it did break other programs.

Sounds nice, I'd buy one. Oh wait I have one, its called a computer. None of the things I mentioned above are new. Rolling all of these features into one device is going to take forever.
