It kills me that people in Canada can get NFL's sunday ticket through their regular cable, but do to agreements and such the only way to get NFL sunday ticket in the US is to buy a satellite/directTV. =(
It's not like the technology isn't there to support it, they are just afraid of screwing up the big Network TV money (ABC/ESPN/CBS/FOX)...
The Transparency-Project Has some neat tools to do a FOAF (friend of a frienc) or in this case six degrees of campaign contribution, and how certain politicians "relate" to others and certain interest groups. *shrug* it's a neat demonstration of the concept at least...
well... there is a certain truth to that (hackers aren't the majority) HOWEVER there is a benefit in the form of INNOVATION when a company "opens" up a bit/becomes hacker friendly/shares information with the user/developer commmunity.
Maybe your mom doesn't want to mod her "whatever" but she may want to buy the next generation of "whatever 2.0" that was inspired by a hackers mod/idea...
furthermore... a hack the first time is difficult, but eventually the "mod" can become simple and the "normal" to "normal but technically inclined" person can perform them e.g. x-box mod chips are "simple" now and don't require any intricate soldering or know how... (probably not the best example ---> but one the/. crowd probably gets)
*shrug* bottom line it's about innovation... and finding new uses for products the stodgy business thinktanks didn't think of. by being open in stead of hording their info they can foster a whole team of "Free" innovators to r & d new applications.

An arcade trackball is very much the same technology used in analog mice (i.e. the ones with the balls, lol!) They just make them out of better/stronger parts to take abuse of bar play/patrons (i.e. steal rollers and good ball bearings instead of plastic rollers and bushings).
With that said, I don't see why one couldn't make a very simple electronic interface (instead of bullying yoru track ball with a sander). It's just light choppers blocking a signal from an ir led to a ir reciever led... bypass that and send your own pulses... and wooooooosh (without the physical wooooosh).
