I took away Mom's PC and gave her a george forman grill in it's place. Now she can "check her email" and all the fat drips down in to the drip tray... and her email now has grill marks on both sides and cooks in half the time!
doesn't any industry take responsibility for itself? If an industry doesn't change or grow with the times (or make those changes fast enough) they can be left to the side of the road...
Other media/technology went through changes brought upon by new technology/mediums... like radio with the advent of tv and now TV with the advent of the internet.
Encyclopedia salesman didn't peddle large volumes of books, they "sold" the books by letting parents believe little johnny would be all he could be if he just had an encyclopedia set! We need to be sold something on TV in an informercial or QVC to tell us it will make our kid smart now as we don't trust the door to door hucksters... but we do trust that re-assuring family in the hooked on phonics commercial...
Every other month a new study says, "Eggs are bad... Eggs are good" "salt is bad... salt is good" "Beer is good for you... beer is bad" "coffee is good... coffee is bad"
Everything causes cancer (not sure who to attribute that saying to)...
well... here's a windoze utility to control directTV box via serial cable There probably is a linux version out there, but I had that link handy so uh.. there it is...
IF you do decide to build your own, may I humbly suggest checking out Build your own PVR community site and maybe joining in on the discussion(s)...
The rub is that you need to somehow control when channels are changed on your satellite's set top box so that the PVR software can record shows/change channels without your intervention.
As you noted there are two main ways to do that. Hook up a serial cable between your PC and your satellite set top box and use a software widget to let the PVR software change channels that way. DirectTivo bundles with a serial cable to control DirectTV boxes this way.
OR
Use an IR blaster... an Ir blaster is nothing more than some IR led's that you orient towards your satellite set top box (and connect to your PC) and then your PC acts just like your DirectTV (or whatever) remote control to change the channels at will... This is what Tivo uses when you have a digital cable box that you need to control...

gb-pvr is very neat, but it is also very beta... I look forward to watching the progress develop on that project. Until then I still yearn for something more/better/stable and free (as in beer and as in speech)
did you try a KnoppMyth install or did you roll your own MythTV install?
*shrug* if you haven't tried KnoppMyth, it might help you (if you aren't an uberLinux geek) get over the initial install/dependencies/setup hump... YMMV
That's what I want to know... if you can't view the on screen display on the TV using arguably "the best" PVR card (consumer level) out there, that's pretty crappy and not useful for me.
From what I understand you can get this to work with MythTv but you have to find a X Driver for IVTV module and everything isn't a 100% stable yet (again from what I understand)
I guess I can only hope that the support of the OSS community continues and improves and makes a product that surpasses the propietary one...
Krikey... here we see the script kiddie in his native habitat, his parents spare room... look at how he asks for warez and 733t scriptz in AOL chatrooms... We musn't approach too quickly or we'll startle the little feller...
it's called Cookin' With Google you enter in what items you have laying around your fridge and perhaps which type of cuisine you are interested in and it pulls up recipes on the web based upone the ingrediants you have (using a nifty google API "hack")...
Car manufacturers do insidious things with their ability to "code" stuff into the onboard computer.
For example nissan purposely ratcheted down the HP of one of their cars in software/firmware and then of course sells an "add on kit" where you get that hp "back" for $$$.
Say nothing of the idiot light's that go on ("ooooh check engine, I'm scared.. I better pull over and get towed to a dealership right away!") at specified intervals/mileage to have people bring in their cars for a manufacturers recommended fleecing.
(note sometimes check engine does indicate a "real" problem... or an emissions issue... YMMV... and if your oil light comes on, for the love of god don't continue driving it for an hour till the engine siezes... pull over and call your husband and/or put some damn oil in!!!! Wait, was that my "outside voice/text"?)
After the initial commercial, the relevant part is the very beginning of the skit (feel free to stick with it if it entertains ya... or not... wtf do I care?!)

ArcadeControls.com (BYOAC site) for shame!
And man is the x-arcade "cabinet" just an ugly expensive bookshelf for a TV and PC with a shelf for one of their undersized controllers, or what?

that's pretty damn cool.
The problem with being a geek, is that you never run out of cool crap that you "have to" buy... they keep bringing cooler and cooler shit to market.
just when I thought I wanted a mini-itx mobo for my PVR project this comes along... oy vey!
