while pocket pcs are portable. i think sinice its in an office a pad type such as the FIC Aquapad would be well suited. You can get more info on screen at once, more difficult to steal and for people with visual imparments as well. they are color and biger and still very portable. but not a laptop or a pocket pc. get the best of both worlds.
get a cheap test bed together. a video card with a tv tuner and inputs a sound card. a fairly heavy install of your fav distribution and start tring what you need todo. you can talk about it til your blue in the face. you can think about it until your head expoldes. or you can do it and see what you come up with on your own and then migrate over to it once its done.
you can do anything with linux. its just how much time do you have to write the code you need to make it do it... and linux has lots of audio tools. linux has lots of and lots of programing tools. linux has some video tools too. i dont see whats slowing you down.
A basic stamp ought to do exactly what you need. easy to program (pbasic) built to interface with a computer. and fairly easy to build simple circuts for stuff like security systems.... have your software on the pc monitor what the stamp is saying to the serial port of the PC and if event occurs software fires off a page, email, updates webpage, calls cops, tell stamp to drops anvil on heads etc......
if music didnt suck so bad right now. with everyone sounding like everyone with a few exeptions that dont like anyways i would buy more. For years ive been buy stuff i have had only heard a song or 2 and been supprised by content of cd and disapointed a few times too. but im sure as hell not gonna by any creed, britney, etc. cause it sucks. Better music means more sales, music sucks right now when napster was still in FULL swing a year or so back there was some decent stuff.

some companys may want you to stay a programer because your good some may want you as an admin. some just may be to cheap or crapy to do anything else with you. but it comes down to who your workin for and how much and well you like them and they like you.
with all the big shops all moving to 100% linux or Linux+a commercial unix. no wonder MS has their panties in a bunch over the GPL. If it was a MS shop think of the killing in licencing and lost productivity due to reboots and solitare.
Its good to see more shops moving to linux and esp big ones. Getting attention and really showing that linux is up to the task.
get your self a raft (with frame and cooler), kyak (hardshell or inflateable). Find a river and go on a 2 day float. Pick a strech of river that you can handle.
Float for a day then find a place to camp. Play with your gps, laptop, palm, digital camera.... (gonna need a dry bag or pellican case.) sleep. Repeat until you are at destintaion...
thats really a beautiful thing. but many of us work in cubes and dont have the luxury of having an early warning system that wouldnt go off every 5 min because someone walking by the cube down from yours.
the terrapin mine kicks ass. its got network and usb master and slave granted its meant to be a multiple use tool i would use it as a mp3 device anyday. so it doesnt have firewire and it takes a lil while to transfer to its only 10 gig harddrive. but i doubt i will be listing to 10gigs of music in one sitting or trip to anyplace anytime soon.
and it stores pics from digital camera. i take this and my digital camera on a trip with me and i dont need a laptop to store my pics when i fill my card and and listen to some tunes too.
so the yahoo pr0n bots will respond when i tell them to go away and that i dont need there pr0n? or subtly tell me i need enhance my penis size? i was getting tired of just typing and getting no responces from them, and having to add them to my ignore list.
the 8ghz box isnt for MP3s at all thats why people would be keeping there old boxes around. to download play rip and burn copy etc... and the 8ghz for e-mail and games and the "legal" stuff...
If things keep going way of not being able to rip mix and burn cds as a function of the pc or drive. a few years down the road everyone will have an older box just for burning and ripping and mixing while they use there brandnew 8.gighz box for everything else...
I know him. He actually dreaded being slashdotted. he is gonan owe his isp sooo much. he goes over on his bandwidth quite often and his ISP wasnt happy abotu memepool linking to him. and he is in newyork right now so is unable to handle the situation.

ive been spoiled by all the great freeware and open source stuff out there. why get eval when you can get it free? or make your own?

1st they have to want to learn unix/linux.
