Everybody has been creaming themselves over how well the "science" holds up - as if this were really a hard science movie.
I don't understand this, as there was a plot hole so glaring to me that even as I marveled over the storytelling and the effects it continued to eat away at my Circle of Suspension of Disbelief.
OK, so Pandora is supposed to be in another star system - as I understand Proxima Centari. Let's take a distance of 4.3 lightyears for discussion. Now, at a minimum there had to be 2 trips from Earth to Pandora, and possibly as many as 4:
1) We had to identify that there was unobtanium there: if that required a probe to be sent that is 1 trip there, plus one communication back. If there is some way to detect it by observation then no trip is needed, so let's assume that to be nice.
2) We had to send a probe there to get the Na'vi DNA, and somehow communicate that back to Earth. That is at least one trip there + one communication back (the reason for the distinction will become clear shortly).
3) We had to send people + Avatars from Earth to Pandora.
There are three possible assumptions:
1) Humans have faster than light travel. Thus a "trip" and a "communication" are the same, and take some time less than 4.3 years as viewed from Earth. However, I would assert if we know enough to do FTL, we aren't going to be using chemical projectile weapons in a fight. (it also seems likely we would be able to synthesize a room-temp superconductor, but I digress).
2) Humans have relativistic flight (.5c to.9c) - trips take about 8 years, communications 4 years. Minimum time is thus 8+8+4 = 20 years, plus another 8 years before unobtanium would be flowing back to Earth. That's a long time to wait. Moreover, if you can do.5c ships, you are able to manipulate energies much higher than we can now, so again, no chemical projectile weapons.
3) Humans have non-relativistic flight (.1c or less) - trips take 400 years, communications 4 years. Again, that's just too long to wait.
"What if you cannot use energy weapons on Pandora because of energy fields?" OK, but that still doesn't prevent a ship in orbit from slamming a large mass into the One Tree at great speed, with a much more efficient and devastating effect on Na'vi morale. Again, tell me why they used massed rockets rather than a small rock?
Forget all that, why are there huge floating rocks all over the place?
I guess they're supposed to keep a record of every copyrighted work (I assume the RIAA only care about 'their own works'), scan every video uploaded and remove anything detected because no one has any business using music, fair use, licensed or not...right?
When I left Boeing, I packed 'my' stapler in my personal belongings. When a cow-orker spotted me doing that, I informed him that I had originally acquired it when another employee was about to pitch it in the garbage (they had loaded the wrong size staples in it, jammed it, and were too lazy to try to fix it). I told him I'd be more than happy to return it from whence it came.
So not in the smoldering remains of your former company then?
I actually like the parent's Doritos analogy - it's true when you think of it that way; there would be all sorts of uproar if physical goods were advertised and sold the way broadband is.
broadband isn't a physical good though is it. The fairest way would be for them to say to consumers something along the lines of "your local network has a peak capacity of XMbps and that is shared bewteen n households. The actual speed you get will vary". Which in a way they do, they just dont tell people and most people don't know that if you have a real net hog living down the street he can adversely affect everyones speed.
I agree, that $600 or whatever though seems like a highly inflated place, now I'm far from in the know and correct me if I'm wrong but whats the difference between iPod and iPhone, AFAIK its just the phone gubbins, and what's the price difference?
In terms or performance money could be much better spent elsewhere. The point really is people only want it because its an iPhone and anything with an i infront is hotshit. They dont care what it actually is or can do they just want to be able to pull one out of their pocket and be 'in'. And like everything they want it cheap(free) and they want it now.
The credit card companies charge them (Ryan air) every time you pay by credit card (where did you think all your credit card's freebies came from). So it is only fair that they pass this cost to the customer who use it and let the rest of us (using payment methods that don't extort the businesses) pay a cheaper fare.
Except that you get charged per ticket, not transaction, two tickets paid for at once pays two card admin fees. Theyre have been a few times I've had to travel with ryanair, because they're the only one who do the route. Even if the ticket is advertised at 99p you still end up paying about £30 so times 2 thats £60, then a tenner on top for the privelige of paying for it makes £80 for what should've rightly cost 2, and that's not even with bags, food etc. just taxes, check in fees, basically what you need to get on the plane. I've never been able to pay cash as you'd have to buy it at the airport and that removes the whole buying it advance get it cheaper aspect, It wouldnt suprise me if there was a cash charge too. It's a complete sham. Imagine you went into HMV or any shop and they said they were going to charge you an (extortionate) administration fee per item. They'd get laughed out of business in no time.
Why is it unbelievable? The artist has signed up to a deal where they have to do no additional work and still get royalties.
If you don't want the whole iTunes/retailer/distributor/label deal just do it yourself, no-one's stopping you.
As oppose to the government who have so much to do with it, and the label who have even less further work on it, all they did was provide cash/studio but thats a whole other/. article. The distributor, what do they actually do for online sales? And the retailer who you would expect to take the lions share but then pay on for every copy sold or however the online model works. So who actually does additional work that deservs all the money. Atleast the artist did the work in the first place.
So basically your choice is go it alone at very slim odds. Not everyband can just set up a webshop and get on with it. Or bend over and take what your given and be bloody happy for the opportunity?
Well you'd think for sudden acceleration the throttle would be wide open and the brakes off so I would assume the data logging is accurate. The question is, why? More than likely it's not commanded by the driver, unless a load of toyata drivers thought they can crash their cars for free money. Or are toyota now telling peole they're driving wrong?
No, modders in the terms of people who mod the game to make more content, maps, vehicles, weapons etc etc are bloody heroes in my book and I really wish the console market could/would support them. I mainly mean in terms of people who mod game files to give themselves an advantage in multiplayer. I must admit I'm not currently up do date with the PC cheating scene so don't know what classes as what but I was generally refering to cheaters.

Anyone who falls for this are the same people who believe the phone calls telling them won some lottery they never entered in some country they've never been too. They'd get a short sharp fuck off if they called me.
Are we to take that as 7000-9000 windows machines crashing per second?
That's fascinating. I'm trying to learn Kanji but it might be more achievable (for me personally) to convince Japan to change their writing system.
If you can convince them to switch to English you'll be set.
So he wants them to shut down the site otherwise he's going to sue and have the site shut down? Sounds like a bit of a twat to me.
Be careful, though - the focus is *very* hot. 3rd degree burns hot.
That sounds like advice from experience lol
They probably dont know where fiji is let alone they have interenet there.

Super man already tried and failed to destroy the sun with atomic weapons.
So nuking from orbit isn't the only way to be sure?

You rarely if ever have a non-DRM version of the same DRM-laced product.
Of course you do! It's just all over thepiratebay and demonoid is all.
Landing on an asderoid? It's the safest thing in the world, *whoosh* *whoosh* *whoosh* safe!
that prude Steve Jobs that suggests that we shouldn't be watching hardcore pornography on the bus.
The nerve of the man!
