  1. until... on $60 Games Are Here To Stay · · Score: 2, Interesting

$60 games are here to stay New. If you need your fix RFN, go for it. Me, I'll wait until I can pick 'em up at my local used game store on the cheap, though that's assuming I ever get a next-gen console in the first place - the best part about the PS3 coming out was the way the prices of PS2 games sunk through the floor. I'm gettin' a lot of milage out of that.

  2. Re:Longhouse, anyone? on Privacy is a Biological Imperative? · · Score: 1

I recall reading somewhere (though the source escapes me at the moment) that modern conceptions of privacy had their roots in, of all things, masonry and architecture: when the only source of heat in the winter was a single fire in a large room, everybody slept communally to be as close to the warmth as possible. But as building techniques improved and stone chimneys came into prominence, it became possible for individual rooms to be heated by comparably smaller fires in the second stories the chimneys served as the backbone to support. This happened in, what, the 16th century or so?

You guys were podcasting back in the day with Geeks in Space. Those recordings viewed from now, almost a decade later, would be an awesome peek back into a different kind of internet, but I can't find the mp3's archived anywhere - I used to have 'em on a ZiP disk (heh) but even if I knew where it was, I'd have no way to read it.

Anyone have a copy of 'em lying around that they'd like to make available for research's/nostalgia's sake?

  4. Good. on eBay and Google Make Amends, Kinda · · Score: 3, Informative

Good for me, anyway - adwords on google searches for anything even remotely purchasable almost always included a generic, keyword-added eBay ad that was ignorable by default; it was approaching crapflood levels.

Let's hope that eBay pulling back will result in searches that're actually relevant. (Searching for Anime and being told that an anime sale is going on at foo.com makes sense; being told that I can buy anime on eBay is unnecessary.)

But the second point you brought up is nothing new. Have you ever tried writing an english paper using words like 'aint' or 'brung'?

Actually, yes. In high school (this was, what? the mid-nineties or so) and I aced 'em. There were a number of reasons for this:

    1. My analysis of the literature was backed up from textual sources and properly cited.
    2. My teacher appreciated my teenage attempt to craft my own literary style and cut me some slack.
    3. I had a firm grasp of how to use meter, tone, timbre and rhythm to affect the weight of my argument.

There's a difference between "ain't" and "lol". Ain't as a construction exists as a word because people speak that way, and I firmly believe that learning how to write persuasively means writing the way you speak - fluidly, rhythmically and emphatically. lol is just lazy, doesn't serve any literary purpose and perverts the language in a different way than colloquial contractions like "ain't" do.

I mean, if it were up to me I'd take five points off for every txtspeak on a student's paper on the spot. But there's a line between affect and laziness.

Now that I know it's copyright protected to the point of being unplayable? Sorry Sony; you just lost my twenty bucks. Sucks to be you.

The thing is, optical drives add weight and suck down battery life and, for an ultralight with a flash drive, the dvd drive would be he first thing to go. If they're targeting it as a secondary computer for desktop users, an optical drive is unnecessary - all updates can be done through firewire or wireless. If they're just selling it as a primary, small form factor laptop, my guess would be the optical drive would be an external cabled accessory. Possibly internal, but I really doubt it. all this is assuming the thing actually exists. We'll see. --Triv
