I do not know what technology the White House uses, but i work for a company that offers an email archiving service for just this sort of thing. Our customer base is mostly lawyers, hospitals, and people who deal with stocks and trading. Generally this service is used to stem insider trading, information leaking and to be ready in case your buisness is served with papers requiring you to produce emails from a specific period of time.
With our system, all email end up on a WORM device (see permabit) so we can assure all parties the data has not been tampered with.
Now - the interesting part - the amount of disk space needed can vary based on the customer's retention policy - which is general dictated by various federal standards (SAS70, etc), so really, you don't need an insane amount of disk space. Generally we see customers needing retention policies of 3 or 7 years. Anyway - there's no real hard and fast way to estimate how much space the white house would need (its based on number of mailboxes, number of messages per day, and size of messages) - but one of my larger customers, about 4 years worth of uncompressed data added up to about 300gigs. With the size of NAS and SAN devices today, it's quite feasible they could use a pair of 2TB disk arrays replicating to each other and probably be ok.
why not have both? linux-smack and linux-selinux could co-exist. fork the kernel and find some people to maintain an selinux fork - there has to be some out there if there's front-page worthy drama going on...
Of course it has optical output. That is the only way to receive surround sound with a bluray player.
Actually, the preferred way to get surround sound from blueray is via HDMI. I seem to recall some hassle with getting the ps3 to output surround to the optical while it was connected via HDMI - but that may have been resolved in a firmware update.
I have no issue with someone cheating/moding the heck out of a single player game - the only person it affects is the player. Once you go online though - your cheating affects me and everyone else playing online, and therefor i am completely against it.
anyway i wish i had some mod points - mod parent post UP!
why the hell do the euros get free hdtvs with their ps3s?! C'mon! where's my free 42in hdtv? i bought a ps3 and all that crap, so uh.. sony? make with the tv.
but what will it cost to view the content? i mean it seems to me that one of the largest draws to youtube is that it's free and good for a quick time waster/video fix. remove the free aspect, and youtube would have been just another failed web start up. anyway i highly doubt news corp and/or nbc would be open to simply giving away viewings to movies. NBC is already dabbling with free tv shows online (the only example that comes to mind is Heroes - you can catch that on nbc.com for free [they advertise it with each episode of heroes on the tube).
no need to order cds anymore, sun will gladly let you download iso images of solaris 10 (and 9. can't find 8 any more on the site, but then again haven't put much effort into it).
just hit sun.com, and hit the get solaris section. you will be asked to make a login.
I would classify myself as a "hardcore gamer", and i actually REALLY love the Wii. IMO the system's control scheme is refreshing and most of all any of my friends and family can join in. I also own a ps3, and while the system is a beast in terms of power, the software just isn't there yet[except say motorstorm] (so it hasn't been used nearly as much as the Wii).
a side note - i also own both a DS and a PSP, and honestly my PSP has been getting far more playtime than the DS since Jan 06 (when i got the PSP). I do love my DS, but i've had one since launch (even upgraded to a ds lite once i had the spare funds) and somehow the PSP still has that newness factor going for it (somehow).
PLAY TO WIN! PLAY TO WIN!
Why would apple want to allow someone to create and market direct competition for it's own anti-theft service (MobileMe)?
Check this out -
Based around LUA, and its got a full online tutorial. He could be making simple games within a few days.

Very neat stuff.
Uhh... 3 letters for you. D.N.S.
My kingdom for a mod point. Sigh.
A 2009 release or 'RTM' date shouldn't be a surprise at all.
The beta expires in July, so the 'Release Candidate' build should be out before then, and the final version soon after.
the beta expires in august. ms even tells you such when you sign up for your beta key.
You fail at quoting Aliens.
"I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. "
holy crap - who told you?
this sounds just like my weekends.
Mod parent down - he's a known dis-info agent for Apple.
...didn't we topple the taliban? take them out of power? I mean c'mon - the current administration wouldn't LIE to us... would they? :P
Where is your god NOW Zonk?!? How many 360s have you gone though - while still being the uber fanboy? :P
Sorry, you fail.
Marijuana is Schedule 1, while Cocaine is Schedule 2 (ie- someone, somewhere thinks cocaine has some medical benefit, yet pot does not...)

mod parent up.
for the love of satan, PLEASE!
scandal my ass. these people are untouchable. there's no one willing to stand up to them, so they will just keep on doing whatever the hell they want.
there is no scandal here.

saw it on joystiq this morning - i am quite excited (and imo the wii is a perfect fit).
as a side note, i too still have my wonderful dreamcast. it's a shame that system wasn't a bigger hit. so much potential.
that sega was still willing to repair the saturn (well until now).
laugh all you want, but i still keep my saturn hooked up to my TV for imo the most perfect home versions of street fighter.

sheesh.
