"We put two and two together," Houston FBI spokesman Bob Doguim said Monday. "We had missing rocks in Houston, and some people trying to sell them online."
Obviously one of those rare times that a rocket scientist isn't working for NASA....
Agreed. However, you could rotate only a portion of the station, such as living/exercise quarters. It's certainly feasible, why it's not being done is something I'm curious about as well. Probably because we don't have any plans right now for long term (years) occupation in a weightless environment.
We're, using a similar technology called Adaptive Beamforming. Our airframe gives us a latency of 60-80ms. We're still refining things, so the hope is it will be at the lower end of that range. We're non-line of sight, long range (3-5 miles+) and near symmetric T1 speeds. Coming soon to a field trial near you.
Of course bandwidth isn't the point. When dealing with wireless systems, it's latency. Our air frame gives us in the realm of 60-80ms, just slightly less than your average 56kbit modem, but far worse than your 1-2ms T1/DSL latency. When someone comes up with an implementation of this with some numbers, call me.
Unfortunately, I can't answer that. We are simply the equipment provider. Verizon will serve as the ISP, equipment distributor, etc. From what I understand of the locations though, you're in the right place.;-)
We're well along with our product. We'll be Virginia doing field trials with Verizon next month.
The highlights: non-line of sight, near symmetric T1 speeds to the home user, VOIP, low latency, and adaptive beam-forming. If you're too far for DSL or cable, check us out.
FAA spokesman Scott Brenner said the only problems are the normal bugs that accompany any new technology.
Except when by web browser crashes, it doesn't slam me into the ground in a firey mass of twisted, molten metal.
Seriously, I thought design philosophies such as the CMM level 5 (used on the space shuttle design), should prevent things like this from happening. I'm sure it's safe to fly, but stories like this don't inspire me to full confidence.
But when you do it, you strip away the reason for free television. Now, let me --
OK, guess what. I don't have free television. I pay for cable. Since my revenue pays the bills, not the advertisers, I now have the right to skip ads? Or do I have to watch the adds and pay for something thats supposedly free?
Does anyone know enough about the system to know whether there is a significant risk of a 3rd party taking over one of these planes during a flight?
Who's to say there is a pilot at all? Perhaps the system will be pre-programmed before flight and use onboard GPS to take off, accomplish the mission, and land. I guarantee you that autonomous flight is being looked at, mostly likely in conjunction with flying via remote pilot.
Hopefully common sense will be used when setting rates. Internet broadcast requires more costs (in theory) then regular radio broadcasts.
Hmmm....well, in theory, the costs of an FCC license and signal amplifiers, antennas, etc are pretty damn expensive as well. I'd be interested in a montly cost summary between the two if one existed. I have to believe that it's cheaper to run an Internet based station. Bandwidth isn't that expensive. Here in silicon valley, we're getting very competitive rates for full rate T1's (< $600) from Worldcom (are they bankrupt yet), Globix (are they bankrupt yet>), etc.
Hmmm, maybe I don't have a good bandwidth point...
Given the fact that anyone and everyone seems to have an internet radio station and that it takes some serious corporate money to deal with the FCC.....

The best thing to do is this case is send the letter registered mail. I cancel all my services that way; indeed many places (like gyms) require registered mail in order to prevent this type of thing from happening.
Well, I guess it's time to come clean and admit a few things. I've stripped Windows off the box and run Linux only. So I don't play *that* many games (I did buythe Xbox though to satisfy that DirectX need). But when I do play Tribes or whatever, I do run in max resolution (1600x1200). I have a Radeon 64MB VIVO and honestly it seems pretty fast. I've never played it on an Nvidia board, so perhaps the faster rendering makes a difference?

I have used both NVidia and ATI video cards recently. I found that the 2d image quality on the ATI card (a Radeon 7200) was superior to that of the Nvidia 2MX card that I had.
I've often heard Nvidia boards compared to Corvettes and ATI boards compared to Porsche's. Sure, the Nvidia board will render faster, but let's face it, quite a number of people seem to agree that the Radeon's just look better. I'll take accuracy every time over speed. It's not like the Radeon is a slouch, it's just not the fastest thing out there...
The problem it because is was specifically a marketing ploy. Why use NSync? Why not regular extras? Because Lucas is catering to the young female crowd. And as Mr Lucas is so fond of reminding us, he's not out to make money, he doesn't care about box office records, he's out to tell a story. A story that can be told without NSync. One thing I always admired about Lucas was that he didn't use high priced actors. If I recall correctly, Billy Dee was the first "big name" to be assoicated with Star Wars, though you can argue that Alec was already a big star over seas.
Much like Jar Jar Binks and the Ewoks, he was crossing the line. This time, he actually listened to the fans. But really how many of us have mp3s on work computers? Quite a few I would imagine. Just think of the liabilty you are posing to your work.
Well, I have MP3's at work. They're legal too. Well, legal in the sense I've ripped them from CD's I paid for.
However, the question is this: is the burden of proof on the RIAA to prove they're illegal or me to prove they're legal? Seems like I have to prove my software is licensed when it comes to the BSA, how 'bout the RIAA?
And WHAT THE HELL IS WITH THE LITTLE ANIMATED ICONS NEXT TO THE MOUSE POINTER?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Ye gods, if I wanted that crap, I'd have stuck with the Win98 Plus! that came installed with one of my machines. You can't even turn them off.
Can't tell if you're trolling or just lazy.

I've been playing with KDE3.0 for exactly four hours now, and while I happen to agree with you that it's annoying, it's pretty simple to figure out how to turn it off.
If anyone has told the BSA to f**k off? Had them come back with Federal Marshalls/FBI, then politely let them inside, offered tea and cookies, showed all appropriate licenses, then bill the BSA for wasting the companies time in a fruitless search and wasting tax payer dollars for the marshalls....
Personally, I enclosed a RedHat sticker in their mailing and told them where to stick it....
I always have wondered about the actual effect that talking/writing to your representitives has had.
Agreed. This is one of those few times I actually got off my ass, read up on the info at the EFF and wrote Senator Leahay and Senator Hollings. I was polite but firm in my disgust of the bill. Seems like we did make a difference...I'm shocked and impressed.
If you make a loser, you can't ditch it and go on. If you do that, developers don't trust you, even if you are Microsoft - at least, probably.
Except that Microsoft has the money, the talent (AOE and Dungeon Seige rock even if they are just the publishers), and the determination to simply buy any well known game maker and have them build for the Xbox. Let's face it, if you pay someone enough money, most of the time they'll work for you. Times are tough and money talks.....
+1 Funny.
The RIAA domain has been dropped by its ISP. Something about turnabout being fair play....

While AOE II does rock, Dungeon Seige is a better game to compete against a console version of EQ.
