The whole purpose of the FSF and GNU was to give people a choice, or even a whole slew of choices. Not to lock them into having to only use one type of software, be it proprietary or not. Stallman is being a bit too overzealous in this case. He can't see the forest for the trees
Well duh-huh! There are a certain few people who are in charge of the story posting that are leftist pansies... of course they are going to push this mamsie-pamsie crap down our throats.
LOL, you and I both know that noone ever used that thing like they were supposed to. They always got on their knees and slapped the hell out of it instead of running! lol
That place will go down in flames due to problems related to security changes. I can't tell you how much just locking the registry down can destroy user productivity... as in the machine and all apps crash all the time. Beside the hassles it would cause the developers, everyone would suffer. I don't care what software anyone uses, if you use hacks and third-party security resources, you are looking at an even less stable platform. Believe me, I have nearly three-hundred machines that have Fortres and DeepFreeze on them. It isn't worth it. What can be done is that a user policy can be written up, tried, and then implemented that would get the user in trouble for being an idiot and fscking the machine up by installing unauthorized software on it.
A simple javascript that checks for the browser version. It was originally for checking what pluging to use, but now it is used to block Mozilla and Netscape users b/c the admins/developers all think that Netscape/Mozilla are not standards complient whereas IE is... yeah, we all know better, but the guys writing the pages(ATI, can you hear me?) aren't going to put the time in to write their pages correctly. Oh well. I don't need to look at their pages anyway.
Man, I wish we could all get together on this sort of stuff and make a real push on our local/state/federal government. Pointing that sort of thing out in plain sense to the politicians en masse is what we need to get things going in the right direction again. It may seem that things right now are heading down the road that money paved, and it is. Why? Because honest folks think that they don't know enough(or think they don't have enough money) to pursuade politicians. Well, I'm here to tell ya, there are more voters than there are corporations in this country. We need to put that fact to use instead of idly standing by and bitching about the consequenses.
Welcome to the wide world of capitolism. Here, you should vote with your wallet. Buy something else. Need a feature that is not in an alternative? Let the alternative companies know that, they all listen to 'possible new features' claims rather than listen to a whiny jerk who doesn't know how to use their product(which is exactly how a complaint is viewed...I've been on that end of the phone). Supervisors of support reps are always willing to do at least something worthwhile when you let them know that their product/service is crap and you are going to take your buisiness(as well as others... use the internet to bitch, loudly) elsewhere. It really works, when put to use.
would you please please stop mister bad, evil company (which I support every day by using their products) from producing their product which will only do harm if I use it instead of some other viable alternative?
Oh, and by the way, I'm not going to pay higher taxes for your service, I'm just going to complain while I skim off the top of my income taxes by claiming my dog as a dependent.
I turn off supermount on anything... it has yet to work right for me.
I have been using mdk8.1 for a few weeks now, and I must say that although it is nice to have really really new packages, they might have wanted to go the RH route and test them more before shipping... but I suppose they are trying to overcome the "We're not just another RH-ripoff" bit.
All in all a nice desktop solution though, just not stable enough for me.
I always have a secondary email address just for that purpose. I have a professional email that I give out and then I have a personal email that I give only to those that I want to. Also, I have learned the fine art of filtering(right). I do see your point, but the whole 200-300 emails per day bit is over the top I think. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that end-users and moderate-heavy users of email shouldn't have to worry about setting up a system that they have to manage just to get rid of the spam. I do recognize that in some instances, there is just no way of getting around it, however it is quite simple to just look over the absolutly obvious ie: "Cum slurping coeds hot for you!" and just get on with work. BTW, the email guessing proggies I would imagine are for finding emails of people you know personally or at least know their name, not for spamming... but harassing.
Don't give your email to every moron that asks for it, dont' publish your email all over the place, get a seccond account... etc, etc. Come on guys, this isn't rocket science here. It is the same with snail-mail... don't sign up for a bunch of porn or catalogs and you won't get a bunch of junk mail and phone calls from answering machines during dinner.
Cookies... basically, what this thing is going to do is take measure of the consumers in the vehicle and report back to it's mother(manufacturer) with all sorts of advertising statistics without your even knowing, or consenting... but I'm sure it will be buried in a clause somewhere. Stealerships, er dealerships are good at that sort of thing you know.
This is what Microsoft has planned for the future of embedded systems.
I mean, it was the only technical conference in this reigon... Last year after it was announced that Usnix was moving the conference, I emailed Mr. Andregg(Who was chairman of the conference). His reply was that to keep the conference alive, it must be moved. I did appreciate getting any response at all, but I just wanted to shove it down his throat. He said that attendance had gone down that year on both sides of the fence(booths and attendants). Well, it couldn't have been because everyone was trying to make money and the cost of going to one of those expos isn't that cheap(mainly for the demonstrators). If they felt they had to move it, fine, but they could have kept it within traveling distance... not everyone can afford to take several days off and a damn plane ticket. The moving of the ATLANTA Linux Showcase to Cali-fornicate-ya was the most betrayed I have felt in a long time. I have done everything that I could to be an evagelist, and this is how I am repaid! I will use Linux until something better comes along that you don't have to sell your soul for.
The Internet and Web were originally designed with the idea of free and open communication.
I don't think so. The Internet as we know it was built up from a government project that would allow it(the government) to communicate if and when an a-bomb was dropped and telephone communique was destroyed. The Internet now-days is a commercal-zone for company propaganda and misinformation. Sad, isn't it?
Is there any reason that we would want to buy a piece of malfunctioning junk like that again, even if it does have it's own paranoia system installed?
Perhaps if it were a company that didn't make utter junk, I would consider it. But then again, I'm not stupid enough to put data that sensitive on a bloody laptop!
Directly copying something is not artistic expression. Making an original change or twist to someone else's artistic expression could be AE, but outright copying... is stealing. Just be glad that Apple hasn'd called the IP police.
BTW, as for the fellow not getting paid... shut the hell up man, it is OSS. Did they tell you that you were going to get paid? NO, so shut up and get back to work whine-o!
So, does this mean that having two cars that have a steering wheel on the left side and four tires in the same locations considered IP theft?
If so, fsck IP altogether!
The real problem is uneducated managers who take it upon themselves to make the real decisions.
"Ooh! The latest, greatest from our richest(he is only one of the richest, but he must have done something right to get there) friend: Billy Gates! We must buy it! It must be of the utmost quality!"
I work with several of these dolts. I should know. There is hardly, if ever any technical information reviewed. Only: "Will it work with what we have already?", "Will it work with the most expensive software?", etc etc ad nausia.
No one but the informed care about proprietary this or open that. And well, the informed are only such because they aren't managers or decision makers.

Sorry to highlight the obvious bias towards Japaneese shows here at /., but this show sucked from the beginning.
LOL, you and I both know that noone ever used that thing like they were supposed to. They always got on their knees and slapped the hell out of it instead of running! lol
Even more important, when is the Linux version coming out? And no, there is nothing in the world worth going back to Windows for.

Wrong, my boy, I just tried... no dice on Linux either. Not with the Moz anyway.

control any Assitant Directors of the FBI, Skinner style?
Yes, this was somewhat offtopic, but it does have to do with nano-tech... so sue me. hehe

throw it out and get some new hardware...
your system is corrupt.

If so, fsck IP altogether!
Ok, then how exactly did the companions get the swords which would ultimately kill the king of the Nazgul?
I certainly hope so... the trailers have been somewhat disapointing... I am still pissed about Tom Bombadil!
