I don't think it's the average user, the author is bothered by, it's the average technology person.
None of the examples from TFA involve technology people; no engineers, designers, etc. All his examples are Just Plain Folks(TM). The recurring theme in his rant is that there's a culture of technology use that he's not a part of. Welcome to the generation gap, dude.
I have a problem with mosquitoes in my yard and I wonder if anyone has some good advice on the best kind of cannon and ammo I should get to shoot them down?
This guy provides an intro to agile methodologies. Not being familiar with this notion and not having finished the article, I don't know how you'd apply agile methods (or eXtreme Programming methods, of which "agile" seems to be an offshoot) to system administration but this text from the article seems to indicate that it might be possible:
The following factors suggest an adaptive [agile] process
* Uncertain or volatile requirements
* Responsible and motivated developers
* Customer who understands and will get involved.
These factors suggest a predictive process
* A team of over a hundred
* Fixed price, or more correctly a fixed scope, contract
If your dad has network access from the laptop -- and even better, wireless access that's available all the time -- you could hang one of these network storage puppies off the local network and use it to do one master backup and then deltas periodically. The Linksys unit comes with backup software that supposedly will do this very thing.
I wonder if Thomas Paine would be considered a journalist by "Canadian Association of Journalists, the International Federation of Journalists, and so on"?
If you support yourself, don't have any dependants, and aren't mooching off someone else (for example, your parents, a roommate, or spouse), it's your call. If you've got a household of other people you need to help support, morally you probably would have been wiser to take the unappealing job until you could find another one. FWIW, it's almost always easier to find a job if you already have one.
I have a Zen-themed calendar at work; a quotation from a few days ago seemed apropos to/.: "People with opinions just go around bothering one another."
Wonder what long term effect halving the R&D budget will have on future MS technology?
Hey, no problem; Apple's still in business, right? Seriously, though, it has long seemed to me that Microsoft's R&D department consists of Apple and small companies Microsoft buys into the fold.
Well, to the best of my knowledge, Microsoft doesn't have a corporate philosophy published on the Web that says (among other things) "You can make money without doing evil" and "Democracy on the web works."
It's possible to buy an inexpensive data cable for a lot of Verizon camera phones; with such a cable, you can copy pics, ring tones, etc. to and from your computer using BitPim. I've got an LG VX6100 and that setup works like a charm.
We're doomed, I tell you. Doomed.
:)
Or should I say, "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die?"

Is that a PEAK in your trousers or are you just happy to get a PEEK at the deleted scenes?
Sigh.
I have a problem with mosquitoes in my yard and I wonder if anyone has some good advice on the best kind of cannon and ammo I should get to shoot them down?
Olvesay the oblempray.
...coming soon to a cell phone near you! {shudder}
Wasn't that the name of Buckaroo Banzai's band?
[...] Zhao, a former government official in China's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications [...]
Oh yes, exactly whom I want to manage the Internet. [/sarcasm]

If most OSS is developed by developers based on what they choose to implement, then OSS will be limited mostly to developers.
"Developers! Developers! Developers!"
{...shudder...}
Somebody tell me I can't think on my own.
Okay: "You can't think on your own."
Happy now?
Lawyers call such experts 'whores.'
I wonder if Thomas Paine would be considered a journalist by "Canadian Association of Journalists, the International Federation of Journalists, and so on"?
"These are the times that try men's souls."
Hope it's not per computer, or those people with a pile of old 286s in the shed could be in for a shock.
Ob Monty Python ref: Especially if you've got two sheds of old 286s!
"Have you written any of your recent works in this shed of yours?"

Gartner declares water is wet, but only Gartner subscribers get to read the full report.
Just in case you wanted to know what petanque was...

Seriously, though, it has long seemed to me that Microsoft's R&D department consists of Apple and small companies Microsoft buys into the fold.
I've got one better than that: Hello Kitty Cutie World.

How lond do you think it will take PC manufacturers to answer Apple's latest entry into the market?
If the Mini sells well, look for copies in less than a year; if it's not a big hit, the big guys (Dell, HP, et al) won't bother.
