It was in a novellization of SW back in the late '70's. I think Alan Dean Foster wrote it. There was reference to a big fight between Vader and Kenobi (told to Luke in Ben's house on Tatooine) on the side of a volcano with a hot vent where Kenobi pushes Vader face first into the vent. No mention of what led to the formation of the empire. No doubt Foster only had a few rough notes from Lucas on the background of SW.
My school also had a theater videotaped version of SW (in 78-79 no less) that was trotted out every couple of months for movie day. Eisenhower ES rocked!
Don't forget that Largo is the All Linux city, either. Everything runs as a slim-client to a central server.
Um, they have some Macs there too. They run OSX with a Citrix client to connect to their Linux server. Weird thing is, all the Macs (video and print production department) are on their own network with their own T1 out to the internet. They then have to go in through the firewall around the Linux network area. IT there is totally paranoid about the Macs. This was true back in the OS9 days as well, when they were only given dial-up internet and yahoo mail accounts. Weird!
Denethor used the Palantir in Minus Tirith and, while not captured by Sauron (like Saruman), he was driven to despair and eventually lost all the toys from his happy meal, ending with his throwing himself backwards onto a pile of salad forks.
Eowyn was one of my favorite characters in the book. They got the wrong actress for her, though and played her character wrong as well. She was trained to fight, just like her brother and was being held down, in a caretaker's job. If they could have found someone similar to a young Sandahl Bergman, the blond from the first Conan movie. The character should have been played with a little more fatalistic outlook on life; everything in her life is falling apart and decaying, the king is going down quick, Wormtounge's lies are making everything look like crap and the end of the world is coming. Why not go out swinging a sword and take a few along with you? Am scared how they deal with the current version of Eowyn in RotK. Her fight with the Nosedruel is one of my favorites.
As far as casting goes, I think Theoden was also mis-cast. I always pictured dottering Theoden in a King Lear style, played by someone sorta' Derek Jacoby-ish who, post Gandalf, becomes more like Brian Blessed. Not this guy who is still whiny as the enemy's at the gate. And with the charge of the Rohirim at Minus Tirith, Tolkien writes that Theoden is mistaken by the enemy for the hunter god Tulkus. I just don't see Bernard Hill pulling it off.
I was really hoping to see Henneth Anan (sp?) and more of Ithilan. Could have been cool to show this really beautiful wilderness on the border of Fourdoor.
Cleopatra also has it. The movie's 4 hours long but there's rumors they're trying to find/finish an extra 2 hours to make it 6 hours long. No CGI casts of thousands here.
I thought the latest Matrix movie sucked so much, the Moon was being pulled into the Earth? The question is, will the Moon crash into us before the super-volcano in Yellowstone blows or the Sun explodes or the St. Louis-100% deadly virus escapes, or super SARS shows up after some resturant decides to serve Meercats, or...
Darn those Tourists! Good thing we got Dub-ya's brother in charge, deep down in Florida. He'll find a way to stop all that tourism that's afflicting Flor-i-da.
Well, it was an AF Reserve unit. Our regular issued weapon was the.38 SW Police revolver. After Desert Storm, they realalized that their ground tatics for the med-evac units (based on Vietnam idea of firebases with supporting Army or Marine units) were totally wrong for a quick moving desert war. 6 months after we got back, we were up at Eglin AFB going through an abrieviated 4 week course at the Army Ranger's school. Learned all sorts of fun and interesting things while being dragged through the swamp by guys that never seemed to get tired. The idea was that the med-evac units would have to be a lot more self-reliant and able to defend themselves. Hopefully, this included updated weapons for Afganastan and Iraq. I haven't heard anything from my unit (took my Honorable years ago), even after letting them back on 9/11 that I was ready to be called back up.
Over in Saudi, for Desert Storm, we were issued M16s without a forward assist. You could fire one shot and then it'd jam. I guess, after that, you could swing it like a bat or throw it. Glad I took along my 1942 RemingtonRand 1911. Just loose enough to keep functioning with all the grit.

Where do you think the stone giants in The Hobbit come from? Who knew Judaism was so ancient?
Hmmm...Slashdot: News for Nerds...who do you think is reading and posting here?
Maybe Obi-Wan's been packing grits, if you know what I mean and Luke and Leia are his? Once Anakin finds out what's up, he goes all postal and shit.
Ack! What happened to Donohue and Mike Dougless?

Thank god I just turned 36. No more padding off; I can now be dirty old man, out in the open.
I thought Legolam and Gimlet start going around changing how people dress and serve dinner?
What about Troy? Any word on who wins?
No, their legal team is Cartman.
Nothin' says lovin'
like shtupin' your cousin!

I just got my single 1.8GHz G5! Noooooo! Kahhhnnn!
Only if you believe strongly enough and can cause blood to drib from your extremities.
Or teaching Engrish.
Maybe they plan on making really nice X86/Linux boxes. That would be original (Cough! SGI Cough!).

How so? Don't just throw out an unsupported statement. Grow a couple and don't be a pussy.
