Good example of an analogy for the arguement against the hindu-arabic decimal system in an effort to keep the roman numeral elite in business.

Like saying "how can nothing have value?" in suppression of the value of "zero".

there is no compound complexity as you suggest.

There is only defining a complexity so as to have an easier to use interface to its use.

Where the recursion is simply that of further creating complexity using the easier to use interfaces to parts you are including in the complexity you are now creating and automating to have its own easier to use interface....

But you know that the recursion of the concept is simple...but how many were fooled into thinking the value of "zero" couldn't be, simple because someone made it out to appear valueless, using abstractions called "words", to mislead?

Still, the point is: The ultimate goal of programming is that of making things easier to use..... but being sued for reaching that goal iss a contridiction to the goal.

FreeSoftware will only become genuinely free when it becomes easy enough to create that most anyone, regardless of their limited resources (time, knowledge, etc.) can do it for themselves. And this is based upon the primary objective of programming, which is:

the "amiga curse" is seeded in money and control mentality, and in Intellectual Property issues where the IP of Amiga is so widely spread in ownership that its simply not possible to open source it..

AROS is a clean FOSS development/production intended to be portable. Where the AOS3.1 compatability will be reached and the next branch of development taken up that will go in a direction that the FOSS developers move it, perhaps with a little incentive from bounty paying contributors/sponsors.

Really no different than how FOSS developemnt happens in Linux kernel development trees.

What AROS doesn't have that the Amiga OS has, are those individuals that play the IP game and ownership and applied constraints for money and control, etc...the curse creators and sustainer...
(Amithlon is a very good example of such control and the damage it does --- for the uninformed, Amithlon was an commercial Amiga emulation engine that ran the official AmigaOS on x86 hardware --- it was shot down after proving itself popular, by a bunch of intentional manipulation of legal IP crap.. the curse performed by the curse casters..)

Anyone can contribute to AROS openly, or anonymously. And I suspect that as AROS continues to gain support that even some of the original AmigaOS developers might contribute a little, if they are legally allowed to. But then there are things like Rebol from Carl Sasshenrath (sp?) who will likely port Rebol to AROS should AROS gain enough of a following to warrant it.

AROS and AmigaOS are very different when it comes to source code, what can be done with it and who has control or ownership over it.

AROS is the consumer/developer choice result of constant failure of the commercial proprietary life of AmigaOS.

The Amiga OS has well earned its stigma of being in troubled waters. Even the company where the original creators came to create the AmigaOS had money problems that caused them to seel it to commodore, who went bankrupt and sold to ESCOM, who went bankrupt and it was sold to Gateway, who couldn't figure out what to do with it so that sold everything except the Amiga Patents to former Gateway marketeers, who sold a bunch of t-shirts and never delivered and were evicted from their building..... who has now stated they sold the AmigaOS to KMOS after in a lawsuit against them they owned it at a time they did not....

The scamming is deep and the troubled waters as well....

For the proprietary AmigaOS to make a comeback it will have to overcome the extreamly long running stigma of its troubled waters..... and since i8t didn'yt come easy or over nite, neither shall its removal of this stigma curse.

However, there is www.aros.org which is well along the way to cloning the AmigaOS 3.1 as FOSS software, where it is inherently without the need for those who have caused AmigaOS troubled waters..

I really hope this post is found to be informative/interesting as it the reality of the scope of AmigaOS history.

sure things can be made easier and better documented for the users and the fact MS has had a 10 year start over linux should say alot that linux (and FreeSoftware) is closer to what MS has then that ten year difference.

But it still comes down to selling support.....

In a way, FOSS is like MS in that of holding something back from the users in order to invent reasons for the users to buy.

I say software will become genuinely free the day it becomes easy enough for the typical user to create whatever level of complexity and power they want within their limited resources of time and knowledge. And that is something that is going to happen.... similiar to the public usability of numbering systems and math.

Once upon a time there was such a level of complexity in the then current numbering system that only experts and accountants who specialized in it, could preform what is now considered elementary math.

But then the Arabic decimal system was combined with the concept which stated that "nothing" could have value as a place holder (a rather simple concept but made hard to accept by those who didn't want the general public to be able to do what they did and far more easily... for themselves...)

That value of nothing concept is what we know today as the "zero" --- 0

without which we could not have done the math to figure out computers, not to mention using it to represent "off"

It took three hundred years for the elite Roman numeral experts to let go... and let people do better for themselves.

And that is what is happening now in the software industry... the elitism of programmers, proprietary or open.... no matter, each has its own inherently motivated built in limitations.

And its really rather easy to see thru it (for sure in hind-sight - as the concept of zero, now is easy to see thru the limitations of roman numerals.)

Programming is the act of automating complexity, complexity which is often made up of other prior or pre-automated complexity, and all done so in order to allow the user to use and reuse that complexity in a simple manner.

And it is very much a recursive act that contains a small set of identifiable inherently common fundamental human actions that most certainly can and already mostly have been written into functioning code. Code that provides general automation abilities that anyone can learn, simply by recognizing the fact they preform these very actions all the time themselves... with or without computers.

And who but the (to use an analogy)..... roman numeral accountants.... will argue against it..... perhaps saying something like .... "how can nothing have value?"...

Oh, but programming is to complexicated.... right?

    only I do know otherwise!!!

And because of what I know, that leaves only money extraction issues via keeping something from the users and causing them to pay for pieces of it... like the simple truth of the zero was kept from the general population...
