If you simply uninstall all so called "windows look and feel" more commonly known as metroUI applications, than the start screen becomes essentially a start menu. This goes a long way to making windows 8 usable on a non tablet system (touchscreens on desktops or even laptops are pretty much a novelty as the combination of keyboard mouse/track-pad makes for a much more capable input device) but it doesn't cure all ills. Microsoft made all kinds of trade-offs to make a supposedly unified UI, One that particularly annoys me is the inability to rearrange the order of wireless networks. I am no stranger to the command line but it seems rather nonsensical to make something as simple as reordering wireless networks impossible from the gui.

People are so worried about how long they have to live and what will happen to them after death that they forget to enjoy the life they have. A close relative was diagnosed with low grade lymphoma a few months ago (manageable but unfortunately uncurable ) and she wander why I took such a devastating diagnosis to open her eye to the happiness of everyday life. "I don’t take life for granted anymore. I learned to live in the moment. I also realized that when I live in the present moment, life is wonderful" she said to me. It sounded like a frigging cliche but she seems happier than she has ever been. Perhaps we are just wired to constantly worry and its only when faced with the prospect of death that we realize how futile an effort it is.

And we know that guns are even more commonly used for suicide; suicide is NOT inelastic to supply of convenient suicide methods, and we know this because the suicide rate in England went down dramatically when they got rid of town gas (i.e. partially burned coal containing high levels of carbon monoxide used as fuel in ovens and such, a very convenient suicide method).

Prevent suicides by making it unaffordable for people to conveniently kill themselves. Now that is a real winner for society. We can take solace in our belief that we have done all that we can to prevent suicides and we can avoid all those unconformable discussions about the role that mental illness and social injustice play in people that act against their most basic instinct.

Most manufacturers sold unlocked phones and you could by directly from them. Problem was that it didn't make much financial sense. Until recently (t-mobile which is the smallest of the nationwide carrier switched to a no contracts policy recently) Using a phone without a contract meant you were paying much higher rates so you were essentially forced into a contract. Since you were signing up for a contract it made sense to simply buy the handset at a discount from the carrier rather than paying full price for a unlocked one.

Each carrier uses different frequencies. The majority of phones in the USA are sold by the carriers rather than the manufacturer, which they then sell to the user for a steep discount in exchange for signing up for a multi-year contract. Because it is the carriers rather than the end user who is making the actual purchase from the manufacturer, they typically ask them to do things like place sim-card restrictions and drop support for frequencies they do not use.
