    The composition and intent of the photo changed. That is what is wrong. It appears that the soldier is addressing the fellow holding the girl. Hand out and gun slightly raised. That is disturbing. And it didn't happen that way.

    The line is very fine. Removing a powerline would be okay in one instance, but not in another.

    "Let's just make the blood on these people that were killed a little more red..."

    It seems that the media has to be on the order of a magnitude greater capacity than previously available before folks get excited. Get them under $1000 and there will be a huge market.

    You know it! Marketing/PR folks tell you what you wish to hear. To them, that is not lying. It is either a means of making a sale, or getting you off their back. There are only truths and and half-truths in the marketing world. The sooner one realizes this, the better.

    Apparently, all formatting and presentation information is removed from the XML.
    Well, MOST of the formatting of Word .doc files is lost when I use the "strings" command on them to read the contents. And yes, it works well enough for me and is quite fast. I'm only reading it for content... not for the pretty fonts/colors that were included.

    According to the jumping the gun link, Microsoft's unsubscribe section gives pause for thought:
    If you prefer not to receive future promotional e-mails of this type, please click here to unsubscribe. Please note that it can take up to eight weeks to update customer information in our database; therefore, you may receive e-mail from us within that time period.
    This would make one a little concerned about the real speed of MS-SQL databases. Perhaps spammers would be better using Oracle/Sybase/DB2 for storing email addresses. My file cabinet works faster than that...

    I would have at least wanted them to visual it from one of the satellites. I prefer to know my destiny. And if they would have said, "You guys are toast on re-entry!"... I would have leaped out of the shuttle in order to be a preserved frozen chunk in orbit. Think of how famous you would be for a while. Since this was just a near-earth orbit, you likely would come screaming in for burn-up sometime. But. If it is fame you are after... and a good unobstructed view of the earth for several seconds...

    God knows why, but our company had an NT box running MS-SQL outside the Unix firewall.
    It got nailed and then apparently had privileges to come in and nail the rest...

    Took us out for 12 hours. We are talking significant production loss here. I'm just thanking
    my luck stars that I have nothing to do with our NT setup.

    I snicker and do my little dance quietly in my cube.

    Why not just create a version of Photoshop that can only do things like contrast, burn, etc? Remove the tools that allow image modification entirely, and sell it to police forces as a way to get around this problem.

    It is called Photoshop LT.

    All this publicity has given FatWallet more exposure than would be possible otherwise. I had never heard of it before this... went and checked out the site... and found it to quite useful and informative. Mr. Tim could come out of this smelling nicely indeed.

    If Linux had an exploit that allowed someone to ssh into your box, su to root, then fsck your harddrive, and a patch wasn't released yet
    Well, I guess if my disk needed to have fsck run on it... and it wasn't mounted at the time. I wouldn't mind. But I'm running ext3, so it shouldn't need it. But if you insist on doing some maintenance exploit... rotate my logs too.

    Did you mean fdisk instead of fsck...? Must be a windows user.

    How many people have passed on XP because of the licensing crap? I'll bet a LOT of people have.
    This would make a great Slashdot poll.

    I will never upgrade to XP because of the licensing. This leaves me out in the cold in a few years for being able to get support on my current Windows version (based on the Microsofts End-of-Life specs), and I love Photoshop. Oh well. Microsoft is just forcing me to completely flip my home PCs to Linux. Guess that isn't a bad thing...

    Every digital camera photo (of any quality) is better than film media. Once the film is developed, it starts to decay. Transfer to any other type of media is less than the original, so in 100 years your 35mm film will fade.

    With digital, the quality will always be the same with the added advantage of being able to take advantage of future tools and printing methods to enhance the original. Screw the cost of archival papers and inks. If it fades in a few years... I'll just print another one on my newer/better printer.

    As long as one keeps the digital photos on good/current media, they will last forever.

    CD-ROMs are estimated to last anywhere from 30 to 200 years.

    CD-Rs, before they are recorded, have an estimated shelf life of five to ten years.

    CD-Rs, after recording, are estimated to last between 70 and 200 years.

    CD-RWs are expected to last at least 30 years.

    All of the developers in the cube farm outside my office door are doing UNIX development on Linux PCs.
    I just can't feel bad about paying taxes after reading about that development direction. (I'm sure the good feeling will go away, but for now...). Maybe the IRS can put a checkbox on the 1040 that will allow us to donate $1 to a Unix/Linux party campaign. I'm sure if Bill the Cat were still around, Linux would be part of his platform.

    have much in common with firemen. When things are going great, people wonder why there is even a firestation... When things go bad, you need someone to rebuild/restore and perform post-mortem. And of course, who is going to invisibly migrate the userbase and databases to the new hardware/os every two years without causing downtime?

    I suspect that N1 will more likely try to anticipate hardware failures and notify accordingly.
