    Nobody wants to do the grunt work. Everybody wants to diddle themselves over how they added some interface feature that's super cool and customizable. Sure there are those who do the hard stuff but they seem to be a minority.

    I have a few SCSI drives, one 15k for system/apps one 10k for datafiles/swap and a giant cheap IDE drive for all my storage. My optical devices are SCSI and I can dupe a CD in less than 5 with no CPU usage. Alas, I could only find internal DVD burners with an IDE interface so my cool-factor takes a dip.

    I'll never go back to IDE.

    You are saying it's common practice to hold a truck for 5 minutes to get one more delivery on board? Well then you hold the truck delivering to the railway. I would assume some sort of intelligence would be involved in sceduling the 'trunk' trains so that you don't have to wait too long for the next run.

    It's silly to tie up our highways with all these enormous trucks when rail can do the job so much more efficiently. Save the trucks for transport from the rail head to warehouses, stores, etc...

    It seems so obvious...I suppose the infrastructure isn't there or would be very expensive to create...

    They say the USA wages a 'culture war' on them...with our pop music and Coca-Cola. They want that done away with. They say we meddle in their business...they want that done away with. Yet their whole religion centers arround converting or killing the heathens. What about THEIR culture war? What about their tactics which include hiding their soldiers and military supplies in mosques and schools and hospitols...so they can point the finger and call the US Military hypocrits when they destroy those places to prevent their own injury? There is no reasoning with this kind of thinking...simple minded relgious zealots only respect one thing...force. And the USA has got force. Lots of it. Momentum as well.

    Guerrilla wars can be won by over-whelming firepower and disregard for all civilians. This is what it will come to, I believe. Geneva Convention be dammed...times have changed and so must tactics. We cannot afford to be 'better' than our enemy as it is a huge weakness. We must eliminate those who would do us harm...collateral damage or not.

    I have a program from there that at startup will check the MFT, swapfiles and other important files and will make each one contiguous collection of disk blocks. Gotta be done then, as you can't lock them once Windows is completely up.

    It's this kinda of crap that has relegated Linux to my secondary machine. Sure, I use it all the time as a server but when I just want to kick back and watch some midget porn, I can't be bothered to set compiler flags and autoconf parameters and what have you.

    But really, how many of these things are you going to keep buying over and over again during the price spike? Probably not home electronics or furnishings. You mention vehicles run by the utility companies...but unless the price goes up and stays up for more than 6 months the company will just eat it and the effect on the consumer will be negligable. Maybe clothes, but doubtful...what's left...food!

    So I conclude that the one budget segment that will be noticably increased for the average citizen is their food budget. And you know what? Most people here could stand to eat less.

    Meh...I say, it's not as big a deal as you say....get back to me one year from now and we can compare notes :D

    I mean, how much milk and ice cream can you eat in a month? Even if the price doubles...how much more is that out of your pocket? I just don't see the temporary increase being all that much! I feel people have become complacent on a stable economy...they've forgotten that things can happen to throw it out of wack, and they've stopped preparing for such situations.

    While the price rise is real, I feel it is poor spending habits that give the rises the enormous impacts they do.
