I dunno about the US... but up here in Canada we've been turning down Analog for some time now. We don't have the bandwidth for Analog anymore. Another thing is that nobody uses analog phones anymore. They're a thing of the past.
In college you can learn MS Excel, and MS Word, Visual Basic, etc. In university, you will learn a programming lang such as Java or C++, and you will learn theory such as data structures, algorithms, etc at a more mathematical level. This type of analysis is important if you want to be a good computer designer.
Wow... you explained my experience exactly. I've learned more after college just researching things by myself. I am also going to University now part time to get the analysis and mathematical background. I don't want to be a code monkey forever.
You're telling me! I live in Canada (looks like you do too from your name), and this is a shock to me as well. Our government blows money and forgets where it went! The fact the CBC is starting to stream an open format is amazing. This is definately a good thing, although baffling somehow! I guess the CBC ran out of funding for it website already... they probably bought some Macromedia products or something like that.
It's almost gaurunteed that you will see higher prices from the smaller firms since the tactic seems to be:
"McKool Smith is financing their major litigation against the 12 publishers by threatening smaller companies and then getting them to settle," the employee continued.
This is especially sad since most smaller firms are already charging more for games since the cost of production and smaller printing runs cost more. Then tag on the cost of lawsuit settlements because of a stupid patent like this...
What are you talking about? I've seen tons of open betas before... most notibly (for MMORPG discussions) is Guild Wars. They had an E3 for everyone event earlier in the year, and have another coming up if I remember correctly.
Damn straight! I have already concocted a plot to attach bombs to the underbelly of a Salmon! They will soon be travelling up river, and detonate destroying countless of dams and flooding the American populace!
Oh, wait... spawning season already started. It shall have to wait!
I loved the first, and own it. I certainly will not be downloading the second. I will be seeing it at the theatre... the first movie I've gone to (willingly... not dragged by the gf, as rare as that is) since Return of the King.
Well... if I were a student that was affected by this... I would comply, I don't think there's much choice about it. What I would do though, is find as many spots as possible around the university and bathe it in WiFi signals from property they don't control. That's just my opinion though.
Two, I think they should let the airlines set policies for themselves. Consumers can pick the cheap airline that doesn't screen, or the more expensive one that does.
Ah, but then the cheap arline would be a threat to national security because a terrorist could slip on and bomb/fly it into a building.
The government contends its court arguments should be sealed from public view and heard before a judge outside the presence of Gilmore and his attorneys.
Yes, tell the judge your reasons for the law... but the plaintiff and his attorneys aren't allowed to hear it. Baffling!
Then you dont buy the software. However you ALSO dont pirate it. If someone is charging more then you want to pay for a service you are not entitled to the service without payment. Seems rahter simple to me.
I never said you should go out and pirate anything. I don't have a single piece of pirated software on my PC at home. If I can't find a comparable piece of free software, I will buy it if I need. I'm not always estatic with free/open source solutions, but I can always try and contribute back to make things better.
I learned that being a bully was bad in preschool too, but a lot of the publishing houses don't seem to understand this. Forcing us to pay outrageous prices for software that's not worth it. I'm not saying that we should go an eye for an eye; stealing for a "reason" is still stealing... but why should we sit and take it from the big guys when they're not playing fair?
That's where I see Free Software fitting in. Eventually everybody is going to get tired of all bending over we do. It's already started happening, I believe. FS is gaining ground, and that's why we see so much FUD going around. They're trying to scare those of us that don't want to take their crap anymore so we'll "step back in line."
I believe slashdot has alreadycoveredstories about using the programmable pipeline on mondern gpus for non-graphics functions. They're built to crunch vectors/math. Why not?

It's no more scary than the idea of having a mini fusion reactor in your basement powering your home...
Microsoft does state that you can burn your WMA's to CD format and then import them with iTunes or whichever media player you use. Seems to be common sense to me though.
Step 1: Export to common format (CD Audio) Step 2: Import to common format (MP3)... but then you're wasting a cd. I'm not sure it's worth it. Just stick with one format or another.
Hey... why should that stop me from trying to write a converter? I wouldn't mind a piece of that $1m, and I've written converters before. I'm sure it will suit a niche market...
It's a start to change, but there's still a long way to go. The fact that they're still planning on outlawing P2P networks is crazy. I'm not going to bring up all the arguments about what P2P networks are and what could be illegal like has been done so many times before... but, are the people making this laws STUPID?
Well... I'd gladly develop linux drivers for ATI. Unforunately, I think they've laughed at my resume more than once. They probably keep it around for kicks.
IIRC, and I may be thinking of other scientists in this field... but did they not try out this experiment, and find results they could not explain (ie more energy produced than should have been) and chalk it up to cold fusion? The results have been duplicated, although in very rare circumstances with a certain element seeming to be the contributing factor? My memory is killing me trying to remember...

Ah, but you forget the "-" needed for *nix... so efficiency almost balances out.

Say bye bye to innovation from the little guys!
I quote:
"Common sense says it's ridiculous, and from a moral standpoint it's outrageous," anonymous employee at major publisher.

What about Tradewars!!! The Star-Trek ripoff was the greatest game ever! I used to play every single minute I could on every BBS that I could!
I loved the first, and own it. I certainly will not be downloading the second. I will be seeing it at the theatre... the first movie I've gone to (willingly... not dragged by the gf, as rare as that is) since Return of the King.

Nope. I got one... but I'm from Canada, so the DMCA doesn't pertain to me. I did try to scare my GF with the letter though, but it didn't work.
Based on this, the researchers have hypothesised so far that the psycho-physiological impacts are similar to physical sports.
That if we have more games like Dance Dance Revolution, or VR games where we move... we'll be healthier on the whole?
