  1. Speaking as a Perl nerd.. on Python 3.6 Released (python.org) · · Score: 3

That summary is pretty inflammatory. "New Python: Also, some people say Python sucks!"

What Larry sees as a virtue of Perl, the fact that it gives you myriad tools to accomplish your tasks, many see as over-complicating the matter. You can certainly do whatever you need to get done in Python (duh), but the Python folks pride themselves on giving you a good way. It's just a different approach to language design.

A (possibly) overwhelming everything-and-the-kitchen sink? Or tools crafted by experts? Personally, I love Perl, but there really doesn't need to be this counter-productive contention between the different approaches.

  2. Why not Windows 10 Mobile on x86? on Microsoft's x86 on ARM64 Emulation: A Windows 10 Redstone 3 Fall 2017 Feature (zdnet.com) · · Score: 3, Interesting

Is there some reason to not go this route? It seems a lot more obvious to me; no emulation needed. Continuum on Windows 10 Mobile on x86 solves most of these problems. I think Microsoft's last best chance for Windows Mobile to be anything other than a footnote is to support corporate desktops, and x86 phones that are also a corporate workers desktop seems like something they can manage in short order. At that point, good old-fashioned Microsoft inertia takes over and plenty of people start using their work platform as their personal device as well.

I don't see it conquering the world, but it's probably a profitable niche at least.

  3. Move past local apps on The Reason a Surface Phone Won't Fix Microsoft's Mobile Problem (windows10update.com) · · Score: 2

On topic with the last post on the front page, I think Microsoft's best move is to push in the same direction as Mozilla: web apps that are as good as native apps. Then your platform isn't the important thing.

Then why choose Windows (on your phone)? I think corporate workers would love for their work PC to just be the phone in their pocket. It should be x86-64 and run full-blown desktop application when a monitor, pointer and keyboard are attached. The latest Windows 10 Mobile is close, but it can't run any old x86 code. If my work PC was a Windows phone, I'd definitely find it easier to move in that direction in my personal life.

Web apps for the future, the occasional local app, and make the whole history of Windows on x86 a non-replicable asset for your platform.

  7. See, you're driving a Yugo... on Comcast Lying About Vonage · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm a customer of both Comcast and Vonage. I won't say that Vonage is perfect, but for $25/month, it's pretty fantastic. We've had voicemail outages (voicemail doesn't pick, we can't check voicemail), and that sucks, but it's been very rare (3 times in a little over a year for a couple hours each time). We've had more trouble, in fact, with our Comcast cable modem and Comcast cable TV going down. Generally, the weak link seems to be Comcast, not Vonage.

My wife and I were at a local festival, and Comcast had a booth. I had to figure out why they could have the balls to advertise $40/month for what sounded like the same thing as Vonage. I told the rep that I was a Vonage customer, and I was willing to listen to his schpiel. "See, you're driving a Yugo, and what we've got here is a Lexus!" Uh huh.. So, what makes it a Lexus? He rattles off some features. Vonage includes every one of them. Oh, and Vonage includes calls to Canada and Western Europe. Hmm?

"See, you're driving a Yugo, and what we've got here is a Lexus!"

I thought I gave him a fair shot, and he had no actual arguments or points to make. I'll stay with Vonage, thanks much.

As it works now, Valve's releases have been available at retail, but they still install Steam, and the the game require Steam to operate, so there's no escaping that. So far, Steam hasn't had any sort of subscription option (with a recurring monthly charge), like you describe. It does look likely that you won't be able to buy Portal standalone, though. Looks like it will come part-and-parcel with Half-Life 2: Episode 2. You didn't need to own Half-Life 2 to play Episode 1, so you probably won't have to have either of the previous installments to play this batch.

$20 one time and you're done, if you like.

For all the Rio Karma bashing I've read on here, I see very little discussion of this (IMO) essential feature. The Karma's got it in spades. Really? Wow. I find that really sad. I consider myself a gamer, and I will be buying Doom 3 because I do in fact like that kind of game, and have enjoyed Half-Life, the Quakes,, etc. Though, as you mention, the Diablo games are classic, I never bought them or even played them much because I didn't enjoy them. I'm not going to waste (hard-drive|CD Jacket|Desk) space with a game I don't enjoy, no matter how popular they are. I gave Diablo a shot, but it ain't my cup of tea. I consider the "must have" games to be those games that I must have. I'll play before I buy..

If you don't like FPS's, Doom 3 is probably not worth your $55+. At least wait until it's in the bargain bin. As for me, I'll be there day one.

They [SCO] are not suing IBM for "IBM's use, reproduction and improvement of Linux":

  25. The Silmarillion on Return of the King Wins Four Golden Globes · · Score: 1

I think the Silmarillion could be done as a movie or a couple movies if you focused mostly on the tale of Beren and Luthien. You could do a 20-minute intro with the waking of the elves and Feanor creating the Silmarils, followed by the exile of the Noldor. That should be quick and get us to Beren. There's plenty of material for what happened to him before he wandered through the girdle of Melian. Then of course Beren and Luthian making their way into Angband. We never really got to see Sauron in Jackson's LOTR, but we could see Morgoth!

Anyway, I still think it'd be quite a challenge to make it palatable and understandable to a mainstream audience, but I think the only way to get the Silmarillion on screen would be to focus on Beren and Luthien, arguably Tolkein's favorite story.

For a bit on Beren, go here. For a better outline and more info on Luthien go here.

The issues here is not whether the Silmarillion is as good as LOTR, (I think the stories are fantastic.) but of getting a good deal of the Silmarillion into the mainstream. I think Beren and Luthien could be the vehicle for that.
